The 2023 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

2 years 3 months ago
February is almost at an end and the coming of March typically also means the coming of the Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt! This year we are going to kick it off on Wednesday, March 8th with Clue #1, potentially going through Sunday, March 19th when Clue #12 would come out. I'll be hiding the Allison Wonderland medallion somewhere on public property in St. Paul. Maybe it will be easy to find like last year or maybe with all of this snow you'll have to do some real digging. You never know. What you do know is that it will be outdoors, not up a tree, not on a steep hillside, not out on frozen water, not in anything electrical, not inside something you would have to break to get to, or hidden in any other way that would make you ask yourself, "Is this really a good idea?"    The prize is somewhat variable depending on registrations, but it will be a minimum of $300 for registered hunters. An unregistered hunter who turns it in will still get $100. The registration is $10 which can be paid via Paypal to AllisonWondrland@... or at our kickoff event. If neither of those work for you, let me know and we can figure something out.    The clues will come out once a day, every day at 5pm. I will be posting them on the Allison Wonderland group (https://groups.io/g/theallisonwonderland), The Cooler Crew Facebook group, and the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt Facebook group. Anyone can feel free to cross post them elsewhere if they wish.   We'll have the kickoff event at Joseph's Grill in St. Paul starting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, March 8th. There's no requirement to attend as it is just a social occasion, but they do have their pasta bar on Wednesday nights. It's also a chance to pay your registration fee.   The Mock Hunt was born back in 2000 as something to occupy treasure hunters between the Medallion Hunt and the Fitgers Bock Hunt (Medallion + Bock = Mock). The first one, in 2000, was merely a virtual hunt with hunters posting their guesses online. In 2001 the first actual hunt took place with a small treasure chest hidden at Linwood Park. Since then there have been some offseason hunts, one do-over, and a Jake hunt posing at the Mock Hunt, but this will be the 23rd official Mock Hunt. Will you be the 23rd Finder?

Thank you David for hosting this site year after year. And a huge thanks to Pioneer Press for creating this beautiful experience for us year after year!
This hunt was a humdinger for me. I truly thought the clues were leading us to Como (Oh No!) or Central Park.
What I truly enjoy about these hunts is the camaraderie that exists between hunters. We get to reconnect with the people we know only from doing the hunts year after year.
Our triplet children, who are now 18, have grown up hunting with me. They are allowed to "play hooky" from school and they enjoy the hunt as much as I do. We are all relieved and happy for the person who finds it, as we can go back to "real life", but ever hopeful that the next hunt the puck will be ours!
We will be moving to Tennessee when the school year ends, so this may have been our last hunt. Unless some kind hunter is willing to let me sleep on their sofa for a week... that would be wonderful!
It has been an honor meeting some of you. We are California born and raised, Boston strong for 10 years, family living in MN for the last 10 years, soon to be in the warm comfort of the south. The hunt is imprinted upon the fabric of our lives and we will be telling our grandchildren our stories of life here in the beautiful, freezer box, of the mid-North in the years to come.
Blessing to all of you we've met along the way and happy hunting for years to come!

Thanks David for hosting this clue board another year.
It was good to see you at the predig and meet your girlfriend. Congratulations on the Winter Carnival scavenger hunt and sadly l will not make the rehash bash because my SUV window will not be fixed by Sunday. It was one of the trickiest medallion digs that l can remember. The snow was also tough and the weather temperature was a match!

Shout out to David Allison

Thanks again, David, for keeping this site up and running, especially this year while you were/are busy with the Winter Carnival scavenger hunts. And your insights to the clues were most helpful.

Re: PP Medallion Hunt - Clue #10

Alphabob I agree with using futsal! I never heard of it. I still think the cluewriter picked 3 or 4 parks and made sure most of the clues matched in all of them. I was always haunted by chin and chain, but up till Saturday I felt Como and Central fit better. I was sure the pirate ship seized the silver and gold. This year was the biggest brainteaser ever. I am so happy it was not thrown in a snowbank again.

Clue Explanations

I formatted the clue explanations and attached them here in case anyone wants to see them all together. I need to remember for next year......don't go too deep. The person who found the medallion this year said they kept it simple - wade= beach and hill has to be by the beach.  hahahaha.
