Mud Light presents: Real Medallion Heroes
(Real Medallion Heroes)

Today we salute you, Mr. Jelly Donut Medallion Stuffer.
(Mr. Jelly Donut Medallion Stuffer)
Many a night you pondered the question "How can i get some jelly and a medallion shoved into a plain powdered donut's blowhole?"
(In the blowhole!)
Inspiration, and perspiration, led you to invent the answer: The jelly squirter will create enough lubricant.
(Super squirter!)
Late at night, all night, you worked your squirter so that we could wake up satisfied and enjoy our breakfast jelly with a medallion inside treat.
(Work Work Work Work Work your squirter!)
So crack open an ice cold Mud Light Mr. Jelly Doughnut Medallion Stuffer, nobody else takes it to the hole quite the way you do.

For weeks upon weeks you have trouble staying awake. But for 12 days you inspire us to greatness.
(Thanks for letting us in)
Just because you don't have a gun we still respect you. You don't kick us out of the building after getting a paper.
(Do you know the clue writer?)
While you act like you couldn't care less about our treasure hunt, I know deep down inside...... you don't
(It's just a medallion)
So crack open an ice cold Mud Light, oh tzar of the lobby and continue to keep that lobby safe other 353 days of the year.
(Enjoy your naps)

Thanks to you, we are forced to do the unthinkable in the middle of winter: Dig in a park at 2am.
(Picking up diapers)
But you, sir, give us bad clues.
(Como Como Como)
Armed with your pen, you create rhymes, pray for bad weather, and the occasional anagram. And why do you do it? Because somewhere some guy is hoping for a chance to find a plastic puck in a park.
(No chance in hell)
So crack open an ice cold Mud Light oh crafty wordsmith of the Great North, and know that when America is looking for a man to get the job done, you do confuse us.
(You do own us)

Zeph's Coming Home For Good

Submitted by Joe Medallion (not verified) on

Friday night we need to be at the Hastings Armory at 7:00 P.M. (unless things change) if you wish to see them get bused in from Wisconsin. Don't know if they will end up at a bar to celebrate afterwords or if they just want to get home or what. Would be nice if they see a lot of people waiting for their return to MN though.

Sunday at 3 P.M. at the Hastings high school is an awards ceremony and official welcome home. Food will be served afterwords.

As for how to get there and how long it will take, see these links: Hastings Armory, and Hastings high school At the top of the map click on "to here" and you can put in where you are coming from to get directions and length of time to get there.

If all goes as planned) there will be an award ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 18th at 3 p.m. at the Hastings, MN high school. It is off of Hwy 55 behind the new Wal-Mart in Hastings. Here is a link to a map Hastings High School Click on the "to here" link on top of the map and enter your address for directions on how to get there.

Discussion Board Update

Submitted by Joe Medallion (not verified) on

The Cooler Crew Forum at AbleMinds it is. Kitch allowed his WowBB site to expire, and I've disabled the phpbb site I had here, although the database and all its contents still exist. Who knows if and when it might be necessary again.

Update: 13 June 2005

A forum has been established at PeoplesForum's hosting provider, AbleMinds. This will likely end up being the permanent discussion home of the Cooler Crew

Updated 7 June 2005

According to the notice at http://pf.ableminds.com/, pf is likely going to be down all day. Check out one of the sites linked to below for alternatives.

3 June 2005

Given that peoplesforum.com is on its last legs (for those that don't know, the hosting provider of the site is planning on shutting it down come the end of June), updates will be placed here throughout the month as to where the discussion board will be moved to, and what software will be used for the site. If anyone has any suggestions for discussion board software or hosting sites, by all means, let me know, especially if the discussion board does end up here. Personally, I'm partial to the phpbb software. Kitch has suggested the WowBB software.

Rest assured that I've gone about archiving everything that we had at peoplesforum, and am planning on dumping it all into a database for future reference. (quite possibly, the old archives will be split up on a post by post basis and dumped into this same database). Until that time, THX has gathered everything from shoot the breeze and the medallion hunt threads in their HTML glory that can be used for archival purposes.

If, for some reason peoplesforum goes down unexpectedly, check either on the Cooler Crew web site or at the interim discussion board at http://coolercrew.mywowbb.com/ or at http://www.coolercrew.com/forum/.

Cooler Crew -- A History

Submitted by Terry on

During the 1990’s, the St Paul Pioneer Press opened online discussion forums. These forums were called Water Coolers. The forums had discussion topics related to sports, politics, news, and current events. Each year, the Pioneer Planet – the online section of the Pioneer Press – opened a discussion forum as a media for hunters to discuss the clues for the Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt.

During the earlier years, one might find a few hundred posts during the hunt. As more hunters had computers, those numbers jumped. From 1997 to 1998, the number of posts increased from the hundreds to the 5-digit thousands. It was during the 1998 hunt the Cooler Crew was born.

The community spirit and teamwork displayed in the 1998 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt thread was inspiring. The group of hunters found themselves at the end of a hunt not wanting to let go of new friendships and the camaraderie found on the Water Cooler board. The idea emerged to do what anyone would do in the middle of winter in Minnesota. A picnic in Cherokee was planned - the first Rehash Bash!

Among the potato salad, sloppy Joe medallions, coffee and desserts, the Pioneer Planet Water Cooler Crew met face to face on a chilly, Sunday, February afternoon. Representatives from the Pioneer Planet were there to record this phenomenon and Greg Sax, a native St. Paulite, then residing in Milwaukee, arranged to have the first “You Dig?” buttons available.

This group then decided it should have a website of its own. The Pioneer Planet agreed to sponsor a website, Greg Sax agreed to volunteer his time as webmaster and all that was now needed was a URL for this new site! After much discussion, a decision was reached. coolercrew.com would be the site and this online community would be known as the Cooler Crew!

The rest of the history can be found woven among each year’s clues, images and stories at this website.

In 2002, Knight-Ridder, the owners of the Pioneer Press, decided to change the format and get rid of the discussion forums that had brought this group of hunters together. At that same time, the sponsoring of the website was dropped. The Water Coolers were gone.

But the spirit of the Cooler Crew was bigger than Knight-Ridder. A new place for online discussions was found and a new home for the coolercrew.com site was arranged. Once we had the release of the domain name, the new webmasters, Ares, Marley King and Artemis the Huntress, put the website back online. Knight-Ridder took the Water Cooler away, but did not take the Cooler out of the Crew.

The Cooler Crew is an online community made up of super folks with a commonality that involves digging in parks in the dead of the winter and because we have this obsession in common, we find other parts of us that have commonality too. We believe that anyone who hunts is part of the Cooler Crew.  It has been our founding principal to welcome one and all.  We have always invited anyone with this obsession of digging in snow in the middle of winter to join with other hunters.  The friendships and camaraderie we find is the best!   Please join us!  You will be welcomed with open arms.

We are lucky to have found a webmaster who is passionate about the hunt and has worked tirelessly to keep content up to date and in a format that is user friendly.  If you haven't explored the vast amount of information, hunt history and year round activities and hunts, take the time to do so.  It is truly amazing!!  Jason has shouldered the cost of this for many years as a labor of love.  It is time to step up and help defray the cost of his work, the cost of running all the equipment needed to keep the site running and backed up, his expertise, and his time.

Alas, the Winter Carnival hunt lasts for a mere 12 days of the year. As we've grown, so has our passion for medallion hunts in general. After the short hunt in 2002, we had two years’ worth of mock hunt after mock hunt, with prize money put up by members of the group. Around 2004, we really started to get involved with the hunts organized by the various suburban festivals that occur over the summer. We track 115 festival hunts apart from the Winter Carnival hunt that occur throughout the year in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. We're adding more all the time. And we participate in the vast majority of them, as is evidenced by the Hall of Fame.

If you know of a hunt that we don't have on our list, it’s not a question of whether or not we should have it. We should. Period. We'd love it if you could help us out. If there's a hunt that we do have and we don't have clues for it for any given year, we'd also love it if you could help us out. Eighth Annual Rehash Bash

Submitted by Terry on

One hundred folks, give or take a few, gathered at Crosby Lake Park for the eighth annual Rehash Bash to put another Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt to rest. There were the familiar faces and some new to the Cooler Crew as well.

This year’s finders were kind enough to show people where the prized medallion was found. Seems everyone was within feet of it at one time or another during the hunt. Does this mean the Crew is getting closer? Maybe next year, the Cooler Crew will prevail.

Food for this year’s Bash included sloppy Joe medallions, meatballs, goulash, dips, chips, almond bark, cakes, cookies, salads, desserts and hors d’ouerves of all kinds. No one should have left hungry. The Crew does know how to throw a party!

KT saw to it that there were clever, clue-related door prizes again this year. Thanks to Mikey who donated the digging tool, OTS & Pay me for donating the GI Zephy, and KT’s hubby for making the "golden pick". Others brought wood for the fire so we could stay warm. Thanks for making these gatherings so successful. Your contributions are treasured and made this event memorable.

This year’s hunt was marked by the Crew with a special tribute to Zephy who is currently serving in Iraq. During the past two weeks, he joined the Crew at the Pre-Dig Gig, his likeness has been on WCCO news, on the front page of the Pioneer Press paper, out hunting, being knighted, in a parade and even had February 5, 2005 proclaimed his special day in the City of St. Paul by Mayor Randy Kelly. Zephy celebrated with us again at the Rehash Bash. Pictures of these two weeks can be found within the pages of this website. Be sure to check them out. Special thanks go to Zephy’s family for allowing us to share this special time with them. Jason and Sue Michaelson (Ares and Treasure Chest) arranged for many of the events and took care of Zephy in their home. Thanks for being top-notch hosts and chauffeurs! You did the Cooler Crew proud!

As another hunt draws to a close, this writer is awe-struck with how large the Cooler Crew has become. We have won recognition in a documentary movie, No Time for Cold Feet, been featured as part of a clue for the 2003 hunt, again have our own website and have gained positive press with Zephy. For a group that has found each other because we have an obsession about finding medallions in the snow, there is much for which this loosely formed group can be proud.

We may not have yet found the Winter Carnival medallion prize, but we’ve won a much more valuable one…the prize of true friendships.

Coolerheads will prevail! 2006 is our year!!
