THE COIN HAS BEEN FOUND!!!! It was found under a clock post on the north side of Mears Park in downtown St. Paul. He found it at about 11:00 PM. CONGRATS JAKE!!! You deserve it since there was a few of us who looked under that same post not more that 5 minutes earlier. It was nice since most of us hunters were right there when he found it. I'll try and post a picture later.
Thanks for a great hunt Marley & Artemis. I think we figured out almost all the clues but are looking forward to the explanations. I assume that #12 was to be something regarding time?

Congratulations Jake! It was nice that we got there in time for you to find it.

Inks and I spent part of the evening down on Harriet Island. We figured it wasn't there, but it was nice checking out the new park.

Congrats to Jake!!!

Yes the coin has been found!!!

All 13 clues and explanations will be coming shortly!!

Art wants to know if there are any guesses for clue 7

And I would like to know if any body figured out the first line in clue 1(except those who I already told)

Mon, 08/19/2002 - 9:52 PM Permalink
ThoseMedallingKids

I'll take a stab. Clue 7 referenced the stairs across the street which were in line and led directly to the clock? Clue 1 referenced a historic marker. At least that's what I think. What do I know though?

Mon, 08/19/2002 - 9:59 PM Permalink
Marleyking

Well those both would work but that is not what we had in mind.

Seems there were a couple of history markers in the park, but no, I never noticed anything more special than that in clue #1.

This was Me2 and Ares put all together (sorry Ares if I forgot anything) you can add to it if you like-but I had to type it all out and see it in full) I look forward to seeing the true meanings---heres ours...

#1 beloved St Paul=Galtier
   see a history marker
clock (note at Swede actually caught the "treasure is there"
litterally clue but forgot at Mears)

#2 drinking fountain
stay away from the dog area
glenwood/englewood may have been apart of what its hidden in KIDSidea FIRST

#3 BANK #1 (don't know anyone who didn't figure this one out)
    Insty prints neon

#4 your web address
Commonwealth Land Title is in Lowertown (I think that was the
clue that put me to lowertown Marley)
    Possible number game with possibilites of 12 13 41 8 11
    (looks like lotto time)

#5 saw the satellite-- KIDSfound it FIRST! (not a BIFFY :()
lights on both sides of the park beaming down from the bldgs.
and lights in trees on sides of walkways
(but first we thougt of the christmas lights there in winter)
No parking lot and dont dig in flower beds

#6 didnt get the history thing
dog park-Mears (now I remember-the moment that clue was posted
Ares IM'd me a 'noooooooooo' and I did the same to him!)
    lots of rocks in Mears

#7 Stairs in Galtier
    Maybe a right turn sign
    Possible Today newspaper box

#8 & #9 'River' runs through the park-- protruding squaresKIDS

found it FIRST but I counted the squares-just the wrong side
of the bandshell earlier that morning 12 (queen) squares on
one side and 13 (King) on the backside! (heard Mears was a
previous Winter Carnival KING). Backstage KIDSidea
of backstage passes but weird I got musical notes from it
and still got the same bandshell from it. Baptist
Mass=Baptist Hill area easy for me :) (but why you chose
that wording will be interesting to see) that was my
         favorite clue :)

#10 Sibley was a gimmie (thanks) and Wacouta-

and esculant=TEN CLUES! --oh yeah the award winning monument-Ares remembered it there! and edible food was the Farmers Market near by.

Not sure if we forgot anything here -but you could not have picked a better park-except that Mears may have been where I would put it :)
I tried to call you just to tell you that I wanted to hug you for putting it there but no-one answered at around 6:30.

Marley? Artemis? Thank you sincerely-

had to do with the stairs that were in the Galtier Plaza and you can only see from up top by DAY cause the placelocks up at night :)

HeHe! we watched the park from there tonight, and saw a few people looking! Its not as closed as you'd think at night!

edible food was the Farmers Market near by.

ooh good one! You don't know how bad I wanted to use the Farmers Market, but couldn't think of a good way to do it! Marley picked the word esculent, and added the words "By" and "and" to that clue to make it say "Bates"

Our original plan was to steer people towards Swede Hollow, will be interesting to hear why people went to certain places and not others though.

Clue Master

Sorry me2 - I did see that. Oops

Artemis The Huntress

Clue 1
Its a past marker you'll see
which park where, eventually
but for now just stand tall
knowing it's in our beloved St.Paul.

As well as meaning it was at a park its been at in the past, “Its a past marker “ anagrammed is “Its at Mears Park” , and the usual park in St. Paul clue.

A square on a circle
and a circle on a square
find both of these
the treasure is there.

“A square on a circle” is the square base of the clock which is on a circle of cement “a circle on a square” refers to the circular layout of the courtyard on the square park

Clue 2
Around our coin
there's two big woods
both from California,

and when its hot
you drink alot
of water, not Ammonia.

The two big woods from CA are Inglewood, a current city, and Glenwood, a historical town and current winery. The coin was hidden in a Glenwood Inglewood water cup, from the water cooler at Marley’s work. Ammonia simply rhymes with California, and was capitalized because thats how I picture it on a bottle.

Clue 3
Flashy red neon
in sky blue,
to see more than one
is half the clue.

Besides the First Bank 1 in the sky , and the red and blue clock seen in Galtier Plaza, both visible from the park, there were two red and blue neon signs across the street, visible from the clock.

Clue 4
Kings and Queens control the wealth,
Common sense can save your health.
Eight more clues now have some fun,
Come on ya'll and get you sum.

Originally designed to be a red herring to get people to look at our website, we discovered that “Common Wealth Land Title” was across the street, as well as the address 215, which sums up to eight.

Clue 5
From where I hide
you'll see a satellite,
and on the side
bright lights at night.

There is a satellite dish on the roof of the stage, which you can see if bending down to the coins level, and there are bright lights shining down on the park from the tops of the buildings on the side of the park.

Cars come and go
but you can't see a lot,
you'll see some flowers
but don't dig in their plot.

There is a lot of traffic, but no parking lot. There are flowers in the park, but the coin is not among them.

Clue 6
If history's your thing
then it might be a crime
searching through archives
to decipher this rhyme

The key word in this part of the clue is History, telling you its in the Historical district, not to search through history for this clue.

If of the future you are fonder
and you prefer to sit and ponder,
choose a rock or bench o'er yonder
to watch the dogs and people wander.

There are rocks and benches to sit on in the park, and a specific area for walking dogs (according to the THG) “o’er yonder” away from the treasures hiding spot.

I found BATES and the joke was "maybe it is to bait us" funny it worked! and Bates was an enterance at Swede-perfect---and Pabst in Baptist Mass!

Ares and I were gonna walk up to the top of those stairs tonight a couple of times and we didn't - Ares saw the neon clock and showed a couple of us :)

Artemis The Huntress

Clue 7
If you stood up above in the day
or took the stairs down below you'd say,
This surely must be the right way
I'm finding that treasure today!

The way up above is the skyway, the way down below is the Subway sandwich shop in Galtier , both are visible from the clock.

Clue 8
A true story, book, and movie
starring Brad, directed by Robbie.
This clue will help you find your wish,
if you think of mountains and how to fly fish.

“A River Runs Through It” refers to the man made stream running through the park.

Clue 9
By the award winning landscape
and the quaint little trails,
the multi-colored stone
esculent nature prevails.

There is a Landscaping award plaque on a rock, small dirt trails through the grass, noticeably different colored stone, and a few different edible and medicinal flowers such as echinacea, pansies, and marigolds.

Clue 10
If you want a musicians pass
look for thirteen squares protruding,
but if you'd rather a Baptist mass
you'll have to do some good sleuthing.

A musicians pass is a backstage pass, there were thirteen small squares protruding from the back of the stage. *Baptist refers to “Baptist Hill” which the park area used to be known as. (I had no idea if Baptists went to mass or not, I guess not)

Once it was high
now its down low,
used to be open
now its enclosed.

*It used to be the highest hill, but through development is now the lowest area of downtown, it used to be open land with a few trees but is now enclosed by the buildings that surround it. *Taken from the signs at the park

Clue 11
There Once was a man from Mendota
who was first elected in Dakota.
He once was a Colonel,
three times a General,
for successful battles against the Wacouta.

Refers to Henry H. Sibley- Sibley St, and Wacouta St

Clue 12
Even though we were up front
in the very first line
We’ll still help you out
in this rat race sublime.

Telling you to pay attention to the first line of the first clue to confirm its at Mears Park

Find two seats
and line them up
stand in the middle
before time is up!

Time refers to the clock which is between two benches, you can line up the clock with the address 215 across the street( sum 8)

Clue 13 (Just in case we got lucky, and because there were 13 clues when it was there in 1975)

Beneath the hands of time
in the Lowertown park called Mears
search well with your fingers and mind
and soon we‘ll be hearing your cheers!

Tells you exactly where the coin is, at Norman Mears Park under the clock, you couldn’t see it with your eyes, but if your mind told you it was there, you could find it with your fingers.
