Those won't really be Plug and Play, but they will come with instructions for installing. I expect that the biggest issue would end up being the master/slave relationship between the two hard drives.
I have an older NEC where the hard drive is filling up and I'm not sure it's worth the money to have a larger one installed. The drive is partitioned and I store all my documents on the other partition which still has plenty of room.
What is disk compression and is this something that would save me some room? Would it affect the way things run? Would I have to compress both drives?
I do have some programs I don't use as often installed on the C drive. Can I move those to the D drive and still be able to run those when I need to?
which os are you running on the machine, terry? if its a newer version of windows 95, or windows 98 or newer, i'd recommend getting a program called partition magic and just combine the partitions into one c drive. the alternative, as you suggest, would be to move some of those lesser used programs to the d drive. uninstall them from where they are on the c drive, run the install program again, and when it asks where you want to install to, tell it the d drive.
Ares - Thanks! It's running Windows 98. Will that program rearrange how the drive is partitioned? I like that it's divided - but the C part is too full. Thanks too for the suggestion of uninstalling some of those programs and reinstalling them on the D drive.
what you'll have to do is start moving files from d to c. then re-adjust the partition sizes. and repeat until the d drive is gone and the c drive takes up the whole disc.
British technology group Tif recently warned that thieves could be buying huge lists of e-mail addresses, and sending mass-mailings in the hopes of receiving auto-replies to find out who could be on vacation.
Then, after obtaining the e-mails, thieves could cross-reference them with publicly available personal information to find the vacation-goer's name, telephone number and address.
It seems like a bit more work for them to do it this way and also harder to figure out local addresses then it is to simply drive around and see any piled up newspapers. If you're paranoid enough you could just add a little blurb to your out-of-office reply that says that you and Cujo are going to spend some time together at home drinking whisky and polishing your shotguns.
its an application of networking. think of it this way. the 386s and 486s are used as multiple monitors/keyboards/mice into a single computer that is significantly more powerful than these machines.
check the options that say you want to share files with other users. this would be somewhere under the network settings in the control panel (can you tell i haven't used a win95/98/me variant in a good long time?) then right-click on the drive, or directory you want to share, click properties. click the sharing tab and give it a share name.
well, that'd do it. as long as you've got the hardware between the computers and the cable modem, the firewall software isn't really necessary as the router should be handling those duties.
that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet you mean? just remember, that which we call a turd by any other name would smell equally as pungent.
I never thought about it but I guess you wouldn't smell much good, ares. But I would never dream of calling you a turd! Come on, pal, you can do better than that.
Triple six Satanic JOE!
It's ok ares, I'm just giving ya guff.
I will remind you everytime I think of it though. Not to be a jerk, just so I don't forget myself.
:-)
please do, jt. cuz i'll forget if you don't keep reminding me :)
careful using that laptop
sounds more like herpes.
that was actually my thought too, since i sit with my laptop on my lap for hours and have never experienced symptoms like that.
I assume PR266 = 266mhz
that's a p1, ian.
Can he do that? Is there any thing to do other than PnP?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Loaded Jaguar on two computers this week, a G4 and my little iBook. We're setting up a Wi Fi network.
Just learning the ins and outs of it. But I think I'm gonna really like it.

Anybody else on this thread work with Macs?
paging Mr. ares ...

I have a dozen 386's and intended to install games and word processing software on them, and maybe make a few bucks at a garage sale.
What is the purpose of the link above? Is that networking?
its an application of networking. think of it this way. the 386s and 486s are used as multiple monitors/keyboards/mice into a single computer that is significantly more powerful than these machines.
Up and running, Ares!
I'm typing this from my old PC.
Now to figure out how to share files.
check the options that say you want to share files with other users. this would be somewhere under the network settings in the control panel (can you tell i haven't used a win95/98/me variant in a good long time?) then right-click on the drive, or directory you want to share, click properties. click the sharing tab and give it a share name.
Ok, did what you said and I now have access to the old PC from the newer PC but not access to the new PC from the Old PC.
When I click in Network Neighborhood on the new PC, I see both the new and old, but when I click on it on the old PC, it just hangs.
did you do it to both computers?
Greetings, ares. How you doin, pal?
since when do i qualify as a "pal"?
Why wouldn't you be? I suppose you don't consider me a pal?
well you're the one who said after all that i wasn't your friend, you wouldn't want me to be your friend.
Yeah, I did it to both PC's.
Old pc is Win95, if that matters?
awww ares, that was just a reaction to your statement that no one was missing me. Come on ares, be my friend!!!!
it shouldn't matter. it might though. do you have the client for microsoft networks installed on the old pc?
oh yeah it was a reaction to it, huh? i'm sorry but i can't be friends with someone who's got a huge identity problem like you've got, jethro.
joe!
Missed it! Shoot
Can I be your friend too ares? ;-)
i dunno, cm. do you have a problem having multiple pseuds online?
I was once a 16 year old girl. Does that count? ;-)
uh. uh.
Figured it out, ares.
It was my firewall.
Duh!
well, that'd do it. as long as you've got the hardware between the computers and the cable modem, the firewall software isn't really necessary as the router should be handling those duties.
Yeah, I totally forgot about the firewall.
All of a suddend it hit me and I knew right away.
::shakes head::
It's now working perfectly.
Thanks for your help.
you're welcome.
oh yeah it was a reaction to it, huh? i'm sorry but i can't be friends with someone who's got a huge identity problem like you've got, jethro.
What identity problem? Remember a rose is rose, or something like that.
Wow ares... That's the first time I have seen Jethro crawling(just to find a buddy that is) like that.
I guess you didn't get the meaning of the post, fold. But then you have never been very perceptive!
that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet you mean? just remember, that which we call a turd by any other name would smell equally as pungent.
I never thought about it but I guess you wouldn't smell much good, ares. But I would never dream of calling you a turd! Come on, pal, you can do better than that.
old.
You usually don't know what you mean, fold. They tell me ignorance is bliss. Is it?
