Okay, as I look at the clues as a whole, I get the feeling that they are describing landmarks we need to see from the park. Does anyone else get this feeling?

I've been feeling the same tmk. There's lots of references to lots of stuff that all could be in the same vicinity.

ThoseMedallingKids

Well, from that, to me it seems like the hiding spot is a park with not a lot in it. They're not mentioning sliding hills, playgrounds, stuff like that. It just makes me think perhaps we're looking for a smaller, nondescript park.

i'm with ya on the landmark theory.

That sounds good to me too TMK but keep in mind that you will still have the locals who will always work the clues into their own particular neighborhood park no matter how small. And it's real easy, for even one person, to scout those smaller parks pretty good all by themselves being that there isn't any snow and all. Just a thought.

In theory we could cover all the smaller parks in one day to help narrow it down.

ThoseMedallingKids

Yeah, but what about a really small park like Alice park? Or perhaps on a parkway like Johnson or Wheelock parkway? I'm just trying to keep an open mind. See things that perhaps others haven't seen.

Thu, 01/23/2003 - 1:33 PM Permalink
Clue Master

I totally agree. I wasn't knockin' your open idea. I like it. And I would think that even if it was hidden in a smaller park, they would still hide it in an obviously pretty hard place because of the snow factor as well. I don't think those 'locals' are really as die hard hunters as we maybe are and might just do a simple walk through. The parkway land idea is a pretty safe bet as well since it will remind people that it could actually be on any public land, thus making the narrowing clues of future hunts a bit more difficult. And what a better year to remind us.

I'm feeling fairly sold on Cherokee at this point.

I don't believe they would be giving us the name of the park in Clue 5. Not that it can't be at Cherokee, but I don't think that's what this clue is saying. Plus I still don't buy the argument that we're supposed to figure out Cherokee just by taking out certain letters semi-randomly.

I agree Allison. These clues have to be deciphered, and I don't know that anyone has deciphered them at all. I'm waiting for the big W, and I haven't found it yet.

You're right. But, what are the odds that you can do it three times within the same clue? Seems like more than a coincidence.

I haven't slogged much but I was wondering if it was brought up about all of those new flags on the new Freedom (old Wabasha) bridge as an idea? They usually like to include some current event that took place in the past year. Like the Cathedral renovation as another.

The butt end of hollow logs can look a little like that regal orifice the PP is referring to and there are lots of those on the bluffs at Cherokee. Also, Cherokee is a mile wide (Triple EEE)park and according to the Hunters guide owns a few caves "to keep yourself warm away from the storm, even in the dead of winter. Hey maybe they are even open to all (who are willing to) enter. Of course not in the caves, just in the park that has them.

The clue also sounds like it could have something to do w/ a skyway - are skyways off limits for hiding the medallion? If you were in the skyway between the PP and the other building you can see the capitol dome I am quite sure.

jsy: didn't see spiderman's post, but just a few noodles of my own also, I tried to put myself on the publicly funded Excel ramp to start as the "puck is parked among us" also think about "among us" - to me that means it's somewhere common, where people are around all the time which doesn't suggest a park, then of course there are the views of the capital dome, and cathedral, being that I'm not there I can't verify, but I believe the PP building may be in sight if you peek from the end of the lot. I've also included the Doris Day center...open 24 hours to all who enter, also visible. This is a bit of a stretch but I make the Mississippi the "storm" to stay away from (by the way the clue is worded and saying "even in the dead of winter" suggests it's not much of a storm in winter) Anyway, pull out of that what you can, for me it places the medallion somewhere between the parking ramp and the capitol...wish I was there to see.

After noodling yesterday's clue, I was convinced that being where the sun don't shine was being underground. That led me to Harriet Tubman and her work with the underground railroad. That led me to think Harriet Island.

The dome is not visible within the park...but is from the Wabasha bridge that spans river. It's what bummed me out about that noodle. No Capitol dome.

Other things fit...the Xcel center visible, the Cap Widdington pavillion now warm through all 4 seasons, the American flag near the river as you come through the walkway from Water St.

Will be there in the morning.

It seems like people are still kinda scattered after clue 7- Harriet, IM, Cherokee, Swede, Eleein Weida, Marydale, Downtown/not in a park/by Cathedral, Excel etc...

I like the Harriet info,it seems to work, but technically wouldn't shehave to be the carpenter- and he the beau? Or was "beau" also used commonly for women? My first thought was a famous woman with the last name Carpenter (like Terry's first post about Karen Carpenter) Mary Chapin Carpenter was the first that came to my mind, but haven't pursued that yet.

She is Harriet Bishop. She was a school teacher and was known as quite the talker; divorced and died around 1880 slightly crippled. Her memorial portrait stands near the playground at Harriet Island. She was a leader in women’s rights (and had a girlfriend who was a carpenter). Harriet Bishop wrote several books, including Floral Home. She also opened a "Female Seminary" in 1850 and promoted women suffrage throughout her life. Harriet was of course the site of the Ice palace in 91 (see clue 3)

All of the clues are pointing to Harriet Island. I was not 100% until clue 7 arrived. I was there tonight for a short time but found nothing but I am sure it is there. Probably under a damn rock! My physical abilities probably will not let me get there again so good luck to all of you and have FUN!!!
Clue 1: Basically just tells the hunt is on. Barbs possibley referring to hooks/fishing/ the river.
Clue 2: You can see the dome from the site.
Clue 3: The enterence of the park is the Pedestrian Gateway, 20 feet wide. This is located near 3M (em em em - a forshadowing clue to be "de-ciphered" in Clue 5. The Clarence "Cap" Wigington Pavilion has been altered to accomodate for all four seasons, keeping you warm.
Clue 4: Puck reference maybe towards the Excel center, but the clues already seem to point where it is. I think it is a ruse. The red white and blue may refer to the flag on the island, but the fireworks are light on the 4th of July from the island as well as other events.
Clue 5: De-cipher the clues in general but I think it refers the the Triple E. M spelled out is em. Em Em Em. Also, this is the big one... Harriet Island renovation was scheduled to take 15 years. It was done in about 2 to 3 years depending on when people agree it really started to begin.
Clue 6: Not much in this clue. It is telling the puck is wrapped or under something. Either way, out of the natural light.
Clue 7: This one is the biggest so far. Harriet Bishop, one of the first established teachers in Minnesota, divorced her husband. Taught in a school which used to be a blacksmith's shop. Her boyfriend prior to marriage, James Humphrey, built a lavish house for her, but sold it when she refused to marry him.
She probably died (1883) with a crippling disease maybe causing her to use a walker/cane. This of which I have not been able to verify.

Real Location IMHO
Ok, since I am stuck in Chicago this year with no chance of getting up there this weekend, I am going to try and help anyone out that I can and give you my interpretation of the clues....It is in Marydale Park.....Here's why
Clue 1--Simply tells us it is in a park
Clue 2-States that there is a spot in the park where you can see both the Capitol and the hiding spot, but probably not the Capitol FROM the hiding spot
Clue 3- Refers to the Salvation Army, 2 blocks from Marydale Park, which offers 24/7 shelter to those in need. I think there is also a bit of foreshadowing with the EEE clue, meaning IMO medallion will be found in shoe, shoebox, or partial of either
Clue 4- Coldest Star= North Star.....Why is this significant? NORTHERN Pacific RR tracks which run through Marydale Park. Red, white, blue and legions clue means that you can see the American Flag flying atop the American Legion Post located at 72 Ivy Ave, a mere block or two away off of Rice, between Maryland Ave and Arlington
Clue 5- Tough clue....My interpretation is that the 1st Bank #1 is visible....As for the 2 and 3, thinking maybe refering to the hopscotch court on the playground.....Would jive a bit with the leap clue....Still puzzled a bit on this one
Clue 6- Basically just tells us that it is under a bridge, rock, in a hollow tree stump, etc. Not laying above the surface
Clue 7- IMO, refers to poem by Mary WALKER called She ran...Here is the link "http://www.geocities.com/butterfliesbreeze/sheran.htm"
I think we are supposed to derive Mary out of this clue. As for the carpenter's beau, my initial thought is a saw, but not sure what the connection is just yet....Maybe a street reference(Sawyer?) Anyway, if the next clue refers to a famous man named Dale, I think you can start digging up the park. But if anyone wants to get a head start, there is my noodle's ammo for the Marydale argument...Sorry I couldn't join you all this year.....Have fun, be safe, and happy hunting..........Good Luck

She Ran

She ran, she ran

She must, she must

A leap of faith

- A sacred trust

She ran, she ran
Her fear took hold

Her safe place breached

If truth be told

She ran, she ran

To protection near

Her sanctuary

From her fear

She ran, she ran

He held her dear

And with his strength

He quelled that fear

She ran, she ran

To arms so strong

That keep her safe
And right what’s wrong

And with his love
She ventured back

And found compassion

Not attack

She ran, she ran

With joy not fear

To share her newfound

Vision clear

What about this idea?
Ok this is one theory:
What do people think about this: Raspberry Island
Jamie "Carpenter" made the big glass bandshell there--and the bandshell reflects the sun--the glass it's made of does not absorb the sun--hense clue 6. All of his architecture was termed "Walker." He is still living. And Harriet Bishop was a teacher and a talker. So maybe something like Harriet ran and ran (meaning park since Carpenter is a man still living) from Raspberry Island or something. Does that make any sense??
Otherwise how about that park near Capitol called Cass Gilbert or anywhere around there?! Do you think it's there?? We have someone there right now and people seem to be all there.

Sorry for lurking, but I didn't have much to add until now. I backtracked the website the 'sheran' poem came from - it is 'http://www.geocities.com/butterfliesbreeze/intro.htm' so it seems legit. There's also another 'she ran' poem there too.
Also, Terry - if they are referring to HI, I think the 'doors will always be open' could refer to the gateway in the dike, as those 'doors' are only closed if there was a flood. Or maybe not.

    It's close .... I can smell it
Maybe it's wrapped up inside a "fillet of sole"... or up a fish's butt! Does the frog have any friends we can "peek" "where the sun ain't shining"?
These clues are giving me a headache! must stop banging my head on the desk...

This is from the st. paul parks page.
"The City of Saint Paul, Division of Parks and Recreation has GREAT places to visit and FUN activities for the whole family to enjoy! Included among its facilities are over 160 parks and open spaces, 41 recreation centers, three 18 hole golf courses, 24 bicycle and pedestrian paths, one indoor pool and two outdoor pools, a public beach and a sports dome."
I think this year, we're dealing with an open space adjacent to a park or a bike/pedestrian path perhaps?

    so close in como!
    neared the finish
    with a walker
Does this mean the park ends with a walking trail?

Head on out, and taking a stroll could mean having to do w/ babies. Nearby you should "peek" is a good baby reference too. Stick it where the sun ain't shining could mean it is in a diaper again this year. Just a noodling...

Usual- you can see the tip of the capitol near the bait shop at the west end of Harriet. Also Covington Bed and Breakfast is open all year (on a boat) where you can stay warm away from the storm, even in the dead of winter.

Hi All! I was thinking this clue was just another reference to a shoe:
soul = sole of a shoe
gab is another word for converse... could be in a "Converse" brand shoe (?)

We have someone there right now and people seem to be all there.

my1destiny - if you are thinking Raspberry Island , and if there is any military theme in these clues anywhere as legion might show, the Island used to be called Navy Island. It is rather shady under the Wabasha Bridge - where the sun don't shine.

OH! Battle Creek! The school there - the environmental magnet school - it has solar panels. But I don't think you could see the Capitol dome from anywhere "nearby".
    Something to think about.

    AFTER-ACTION REPORT -HARRIET
No time to slog through all previous posts, just wanted to recap my impressions...
First off, I truly believe HI is the one, the prior post on why Harriet works is almost dead-on (there are other matches not mentioned. Bring your rake! The bait shop is called "River Road Bait Shop" address is 150 W. WATER Street. The street sign says 160 W. Water St. It has a U.S. flag flying on top and is next to 2 or 3 of the gangster caves (matched those "Saint Mudd" literary references, among others such as "warm, away from the storm, even in dead of winter." Now, dead of winter is a double clue and the med is likely hidden in leaves/brush->the dead of winter. Not only that, but it is likely to be on the north side of a tree (where the sun don't shine). There was about 20 or so folks when I left (1:30am) and the place WILL be crawling tomorrow. You CAN see the cap dome from the walking path nearby (through the skyline). WATER St matches numerous water references as well as "old man river" references. Walking/running path references match as well. I searched as fast and furious as I could, as I had noticed the spot two days ago and its neat potential for literary references. I also like the blinking neon sign, adds a nich touch. Now the path extends southward about 100 yards or so to the high bridge (matching other bridge leap references). This area got me so excited it matches almost every clue! Ask me! There is just too much leaf clutter to look thoroughly in the dark..and I have other commitments so this is why I am telling you. The med will be found near this spot or very close nearby. Also about 15 other folks scouring the areas under the high bridge where there is a small parking lot leading to the river (kinda scary area though). I scouted this in detail a few days back when Harriet first came up and it looks like the remnants of a bum camp so not sure if PP would really lead people down there (but it more closely matches the sun not shining reference and the other numerical references to the high bridge (169?) However, the area near the bait shop which is the entrance to the walk/run trail to Lilydale. GO FOR IT because I can't!

Also just noticed second reference to $ or sweethearts - "dear" and "precious" meaning expensive OR it's IN A BOX OF SWEETHEARTS CANDY!!

Oh, and right next to the bait shop is beFORT co. (remember first letters of clues.... (A)(T)(F)(T) = at Ft. = at fort?

I thought this car shit was all taken care of last week. My son's car needed a new rack, PS pump, and head gasket. Tonight when he's ready to head back to Mankato, he tells me the car's steering is not much better. We paid $1200. for repairs. I was going to drop the car off at the shop tonight, so it would be there in the morning, but it had a flat tire !

Tomorrow I have to deal with that. grrrrrrrr

The Ice Palace in that book was located in Central Park. And not the Central Park in Roseville, but one that used to exist in St. Paul and one that I think Me2 or someone else has mentioned before. But I believe the conclusion was it doesn't exist anymore.

On Hawaii night at the PP I went with towlebooth to the spot he's talking about. The fire ring is a group of rocks someone made, not an 'official' spot. All his thoughts made sense. The only thing in that immediate area is dirt and rocks, softball size. Thousands. A fake rock could easily be there, but has anything suggested such a thing ?

In Plato's allegory, men are shackled and can only see the shadows cast on the cave's wall by a fire. These shadows are their reality. But when one of them escapes into the sunlight, he sees that the shadows are not reality but illusion.
