1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

St.Polly Girl

Newell is way to easy.

You have to be an "iconoclast" and think out of the norm.

Still waiting on MP.

Newell would be the "iconoclast," giving us the answer early in the hunt and then offering up clues that are meaningless for awhile.

Recap on NP:

Ittiz a doozie......

Clue No. 1:

The time for fun has now begun

In our hunt that's open to all

But if you don't want to be outdone

Look only on public ground in St. Paul

It's in a public park in St. Paul (DUH)

A park is the spot but a golf course is not

So please don't disturb a fairway or green

Follow this advice and you won't be caught

Wasting your time at the wrong scene

This could refer to Phalen because the golf course borders the entire side of the park and it's warning you not to dig up the course. Or it could be Highland as well...Or.. Just maybe it means it's at a park without a golf course which would rule out Phalen, HP, and Keller....

"Fairway" & "Scene" = Fair-VIEW. Won't get "caught" = baseball reference - Midway or ballfield at NP.

Clue No. 2:

Flying downhill can be quite a thrill

And a popular outdoor attraction

But your chances of winning are nil

If you get too close to the action

Flying downhill could be sliding- which there are places to do so EVERYWHERE those kids today are pretty resourceful! Outdoor attraction could refer to the Midway Stadium that the Saints play at and getting too close to the action could mean it's a little ways away from the stadium. So... Newell park?

Clue No. 3:

Numbers keep score and adorn the front door

Now do your best to figure these out

A nine and a five and somewhere a four

Get them right and you'll shout

"Score" reference to sports = NP has baseball, V-Ball, Tennis, Basketball

9-5-4 + comes together with Clue #4 also address of house. "shout" = reference to cheering fans at midway.

Numbers keep score could mean the scoreboard at the stadium ( maybe it's visible from the vantage point of the puck ). Nine could be innings in a baseball game. On the corner of Fair-VIEW and Taylor, which is exactly opposite (not near) the sliding hill, is a house with the address 895. Now I know where the "4" is - can't give that one away - but it's real tough to see it in the dark, and you can only see it from a certain angle.

Clue No. 4:

Studying the past can be quite a blast

But there's value as well in the new

If you're willing to be an iconoclast

The treasure might belong to you.

Iconoclast = Pierce Butler was a revolutionary war figure, rebel (PB borders NP) or this refers to what the medallion is hidden inside (ie; if YOU're willing to BE an iconoclast (destroyer)) - implies you may have to bust something open.

"Studying the Past" = 150 year anniversary of the PP, founded in 1849. In 1849, gues who was President - Zach TAYLOR - Taylor St - runs into Newell.

A clear reference : "But there's value as well in the new" ARE THEY TELLING US ALREADY? Well + New = Newell

Clue No. 5:

If you're yearning for something worth learning

You might be very near your goal

So try to be smart and discerning

And your treasure chest could end up full

This ones not getting too much feedback!

I've got some Ideas and the Woman had a doozie but we can't share yet... maybe later.

Taylor- runs right into Newell 150yrs ago president. Fairview runs right along newell. fairway-scene=====fairview. 9+5+4= 18 18 wheeler= Wheeler St. runs right along newell. 895= address at fairview and Taylor. 4= can't tell ya. Learn, goal, are all what it is in. Iconoclast= not really sure. Could it be hidden in a History book?

studying the past===Taylor, or history. value as WELL in the NEW==value at Newell. Popular outdoor attraction= Sain

10g's

it's on the corner of fairview and pierce butler

Thu, 01/28/1999 - 7:10 PM Permalink
Alan and Jill

IT CUT ME OFF!

anyway, as I was saying...

studying the past===Taylor, or history. value as WELL in the NEW==value at Newell. Popular outdoor attraction= Saints. Your chances are nil if you get to close to the action==stay away from all the stuff to do at Newell. Stay away from the basketball court, building, playground, baseball diamond.

Well, that's the take on the clues (partially, I have to keep the real bizzarre thoughts to myself or else some one may put me away HaHa, they'll come and take me away Ha Ha, THEY'RE COMING TO TAKE ME AWAY!)

Whoa....anywho- If anyone runs out with this and finds that darn puck before I do- you owe me a beer.

Happy hunting!

ALAN

Well Alan those are nice and all but I have a similar mile long list of reasons that I think it is in a different park.

Thu, 01/28/1999 - 7:14 PM Permalink
Alan and Jill

Can anyone relate as much to CP or HP? They seem to be the big contenders.

Thu, 01/28/1999 - 7:14 PM Permalink
Brian S

Not CP or HP but I have equally sane reasons for another park.

No because I've already been struck down by all the highland fans. Plus if my ideas are as right as I think they are and you agree then what good does that do me?

I just don't think it is at Newwell, I was there and it's been pretty dug up already. What are you guys thinking?

Thu, 01/28/1999 - 7:23 PM Permalink

I still need tonights clue to confirm my hunch. Who knows I might be thinking like you at 11:31. I feel good about it though.

Alan and Jill WOW! you really did your research! Has the medallion ever been hidden at NP?

Thu, 01/28/1999 - 7:27 PM Permalink
Brian S

thank you. I still don't think it could be newell either. The "as well as the new" part is too easy for PP and too easy for such an early clue. They would not give away a small park like Newell that early. It would be found already.

Pollygirl,

Everything I just said has been posted previously, some borrowed, some my own.

There's too many friggin messages now to go back and recap so...I did it in one.

The puck was hidden in 1984 at Newell Park – attached to a broken 45 rpm record. I was there for 4 days digging ( they gave away the location in the 4th clue by referencing Jeeves and Hawkeye's friend - Pierce Butler )

The park is about 10 acres (maybe- don't quote me)and could take a while to find it there. So far I've only dug up about 350 sq.ft. this year.
