The future of Mock Hunting

POSTED BY TMK ON PUCK POSSE SITE:

I know I've talked with a few people about this, but I wanted to see what others thought. So far this year we've had a lot of hunts which has been great, but I think that we should look at coming to an understanding on when to have hunts and how many we should have. AW's has been an annual event. But last year was the first time we had mock hunt throughout the year. Jake had a hunt, followed by Marley, then Jake again. Jake's last hunt was between Halloween and Thanksgiving I believe. We ended up that whoever found the treasure ran the next hunt. This year people have been starting hunts here and there. I like having more people who share the hunting passion, and having more competition. I personally think that we're having too many hunts. I think it takes away from those hunters with families, because it messes up their family lives. Houses aren't kept up as much, spouses are upset more, etc. Cell phone bills go up. People will get worn out. Prizes will be smaller. I know we all love hunting. It gets to be too much at times. I also know that people have hunts that they want to do. Holly has one, Reg has one, Kilty has another, the clownz have one, Lilman has one. I've had thoughts of having a hunt, and I know people like Ares and Me2 have thought of clues. I'd like for everyone to have the opportunity to run their own hunts. I think we need to spread things out just a bit more. Have a bit of a system or way about who has hunts when. What do you guys think?

MY RESPONSE:

No problemo, It'd probably be best if I waited with mine anyways. It'd be cool if my hunt could be an annual tradition. I'd be able to fine tune my clues a little better... unlike this year when i was changing clues even after the hunt had begun. So yeah --- I'm limiting myself to one hunt each year, shortly after the PP hunt. Maybe we could work out a schedule so Redbear and FrozenButtox could come in between my and AW's hunt each year, and more would follow after AW's.

What does everybody think?

here's my take on it, kilty, and tmk pretty much sums it up. it took jake until late july to have his hunt. marley found it, and 3 weeks later had his. which was cool. but man, the burnout that happened as a result of that. i personally went over my cell minutes for the only time in the 5 or 6 years since i've had one (i've got a 612 area code so i know i got it before the split happened) with those two hunts. we also learned that releasing clues at 11pm isn't a good idea either. there were many nites that me2, medkids, and i were noodling jakes clues unil 1 or 2 in the morning, only to go to bed and (in my case at least) get up 4 or 5 hours later and try to function getting that much sleep for a week and a half. that's why i took 2 weeks off work for the pp hunt this year.

i mean the mock hunts are great. it feeds our addictions, and lets face it, we're all addicts otherwise we wouldn't be doing this year round, having cops come up and ask us if we're cleaning up the parks on a saturday morning, only to have them laugh their asses off in the squad car when we tell 'em what we're doing. but from the experiences gained in the 2002 mock hunt season, they've gotta be spaced out a bit. for me, personally, 3 weeks was barely enough recovery time from the end of one to the start of the next. 4 or 5 would be preferable.

just to add something some people can not get out for some hunts but can no get out for others so i think if there are more then just 4 or 5 we can feed everyones needs. just some thing to think about you don't have to go out and hunt for everyone just the ones you can or want to. but me my self i kind of like it that there is alot of hunts that just means i have a better chance at finding at least one. so hunt on and stay cool everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tend to agree LiL. The more the better. Although the late timing on FB's hunt was a bit off kilt when it ran into AW's, being that his start date was posted quite a while ago. It still was fun but the overlap caused some burnout and some lack of noodle time for his first couple of clues. I know I would of easily figured out the '14 squares' clue (NOT!) Since I didn't even get to really look for AW's, I'm looking forward to yours at the end of next week. I also know that when summer time gets here, people post less and less. I only happened to take part in MK's hunt (which was great by-the-way) only by chance. If there was some sort of a pattern it would make things somewhat more organized. I think one a month works nice if there are enough writers (which it doesn't seem like it's a problem at this point). We could set it for a certain date each month so you could mark your calendar. It could be something like LiLMan's April Shower Puck Power Hunt. or Tim's September To Remember Hunt etc. Just an idea. But I do agree about the hunt-if-you-can mentality. Who knows, you could get that unaccomplished feeling of finding a treasure on clue 12 after not reading a single other clue because you were camping all week. It's like the geocaches. You can pick and choose which ones you want to try and find. Not everybody has to be like Ian (geo) or Jake (treasure). Just pick and choose. One last thought was about the treasure itself. I never really paid any attention to how much the thing was ever worth because I felt like I would roll it over into my own hunt anyway. That's how it started. I do it more for the hunt itself. Your DJ thing is a great idea though. I can see this becoming a semi large post thread. I foresee a lot of personal thoughts, just like the 'Look And Feel' thread or the 'Fixing the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt' thread did at first.

I think there is a simple answer, start each mock hunt year with AW's hunt. Whoever finds it gets the option to hold the next hunt... I am going into semi-retirement from mock hunting. Got plenty to do to prepare for next year's pp hunt. I think it's time to remove myself from the game when people are making personal attacks and even threatening me. I know everyone wants to have a hunt, but I think thats the fair way to do it. You want to have a hunt? Get out and find it then!

You want to have a hunt? Get out and find it then

I like your idea, but look what happened last year with you and Marley finding it all year long. Plus I foresee clue quality dwindling if the same people are writing them every other time. Either way, I want you to be involved in the hunts. No offense buddy, but I would feel pretty good that I found it and you didn't just because of your energy and all of the past antics. People should use that feeling as part of their drive to find the thing. We could call it the annual 'Kick Jakes Ass Hunt'. ;-)

no jake i don't agree with who ever finds it will do the next hunt because as it sits right now marley would have 2 hunts and regman 1 and you you're self 1 so far and i don't think that is far at all but i'm just one person so what ever. and clue master i do like you're idea of naming the hunts soundS good to me.

Like I said Cluemaster..... It's getting tough. I just can't do anything with less than 150% effort. I have to limit myself to 2 hunts a year. Not to mention the fact that I'm banned from Marley's hunt. (Which, by the way, I may participate in anyways)I am busy with school and some other things so it is going to be difficult.

The limit will be 2, and depending on whether or not everyone calms down, AW's may be it for me for the year.

I take it MK is letting you hunt just not claiming the prize if you find it?
Are you going to AW's on Saturday?

Alot depends on when his hunt is. He really can't stop me from hunting for it, but if people are going to threaten me with physical harm, Im not going near it!

Doubt I'll be at AW's Saturday.... was planning on it until the personal attacks and threats began. Most of which were TOTALLY uncalled for. I am going on a beer bus Sat. and would show up extremely intoxicated, which wouldn't be in anyones best interests. I am trying to be the better person.

actually the only way you will get the clues is if someone else gives them to you. And the threats are all in your head man. If you can't take critisism don't do things that cause it, or learn to take the critisism.

So who's a he/she in this forum anyway?
I don't seem to recall any he/shes.
Alright, everybody drop their pants. ;-)

you haven't seen anything yet......... I'm sure that your upset but that's the kind of shit that sets people off bro. I guess here we go again.
Ready, commence the BS.

Jake, why would you participate in a hunt you're not wanted to participate in?

King Boreas aka Ian

It really helps to have a place to look at the clues only. There are a number of different ways to set that up. Some of the hunts have had it; some haven't. I've followed every one, even if I thought or knew I wouldn't be looking.

Minnesota Medallion Madness

Something like the above might be helpful, if there were to be a 'schedule' of hunts.

WoW! Jake your digging a deeper hole.

I WILL NOT be the one giving Jake the Marley Hunt clues
It is not my place to invite those who are NOT invited PERIOD.
I want to always be welcomed and if this were to UNWELCOME ME than I won't do it-

sorry Jake-I didnt put you in this position and I have to honor the rules that are set forth if I want to win-this has nothing to do with yours and my friendship-
cause if you find it and I put all my heart into this hunt also, than I loose

-that is all there is to it. And I would be pissed at you for wasting my time and the time of the other hunters involved. (I know you said you were not gonna participate but you have also said you ARE! So I am just making myself CLEAR)!

If I were to tell Jake the clues than that would 'pit' me against other friends that would be bad carma for future hunts.

::hint hint:: to whoever it is who plans on giving him the clues!

You will put yourself in the middle of something you probly don't want to be in the middle of that will extend into future hunts. BEWARE of your actions.

So first off, Regman did make something of a threat towards Jake. The young are prone to making bold statements. But if you get into a fight, then either you're going to get hurt, or he's going to get hurt, and either way their will be medical bills and possibly police and lawyers involved. It's just not worth it for something as trivial as disapproving of someone's hunting methods.

Then Jake should realize that this probably isn't a threat to take too seriously. Using the threat as an excuse for prolonging this argument is kind of pointless. And there really haven't been any other threats or even personal attacks per se. More like people just saying how they feel.

The thing for the rest of us to realize is that Jake has a certain sense of pride and honor that's different from what a lot of the rest of us would think of as pride and honor. He doesn't mind being the bad guy, but he won't stand for the idea that someone else is going to tell him what to do. So the surest way to rile him up is to challenge him or try to keep him from doing something. Because then he feels he has something to prove. He's already said he's willing to sit out the rest of the Mock Hunts. He's accomplished what he set out to do and he has other things to do. What's the point in going nuts on yet another hunt unless of course it's because someone is telling him he can't?

Now as far as banning anyone from a hunt, I just don't agree with that. He didn't break any rules that were put out, so you can't really say he was cheating. And it wasn't like he wasn't working hard at finding it. If you don't want someone to use metal detectors, then don't use metal. If you don't want Jake to find it, then make the clues tricky but the treasure easy to find. If I hadn't of disguised mine with a piece of bark, Me2's kid probably would have found it.

The thing is if you ban Jake from a hunt, then basically the hunt becomes all about Jake. The clues can't be reposted anywhere or talked about anywhere that Jake might see them. If Jake shows up at a park, then all kinds of accusations will go around about who told him? And are we going to have to make sure whenever we go somewhere he's not following us? People will become more concerned with where Jake is than where the treasure is. And I'd rather not have to hunt like I'm keeping a big secret.

I think Jake did learn a lesson from this and he's said he's willing to step back since he has other things to do anyway. So I'd say let's not worry about banning anyone. If you really don't want Jake to be in your hunt, it would probably have worked just as well to simply ask him not to and to give someone else a chance to win.

As for Mock Hunting in general...

Well like anything, too much of it can cause it to lose it's appeal. If there's one going on every week, then so what if you miss one or two? There will be another one when you're ready. Which basically means there's no need to go out of your way to participate. And after a while, it may even become boring. Consequently, after a while, there will likely only be a few people doing any given hunt.

Now on the one hand, I think you could take the free market point of view here and say that everyone is entitled to have as many hunts whenever they want and whether people do them or not will depend on the quality of their "product". Maybe over the course of a few years some would prove more popular and successful and others would fade away, but in the meantime it would be somewhat chaotic.

Otherwise I'm kind of a fan myself of the one a month school of thought. In fact, the name "Mock Hunt" came about because my hunt came between the Medallion Hunt in January and the Bock Hunt in March, so it was supposed to be a February Mock Hunt, meant to fill the gap in between (although is hasn't always happened in February). And if we did one a month, they wouldn't even all have to be the same type of hunt necessarily. Maybe one could be a hunt with pictures instead of clues. Maybe one could be a one day hunt where you go from location to location or get one clue every hour. Maybe it could be something you could do from home, solving puzzles until you eventually get the final answer. Or maybe even the "Tour de Parks" I keep talking about. I think variety would be good.

As for who should run the hunts, I have to say I never really liked the idea that the person who wins one would do the next. Just because someone is a good hunter doesn't mean they're a good cluewriter and vice versa. So I don't think that method is necessarily going to give you the best hunts.

Maybe it would be best to find out all the people who want to run a hunt, and then work out a calendar for the year that can be circulated and even publicized. And then people can kind of prepare for them instead of having them thrust on them with little notice.

Now.. yeah... there may be more people than hunts, and if so.... then maybe we can try to work out a way to do it, to where we can work the other peoples hunts in, after someone elses, in a certain month.

Or... if there is less people, than months left.... then if someone has more hunts planned, or wants to do another, then they can probably feel free to do so, without getting any complaints.

Atleast that way, everything can run a little more smoothly, without having 3 hunts in a row, with only a couple days inbetween.

Now.. theres also the problem of if people arent going to be attending, the name drawing thing (if we choose that option, that is), but the solution to that is easy...... just post here, or tell someone that you know will be going, that you want your name in the drawing. BAM! YOUR IN THE GAME, NINJA!

One thing about it, would be say... if said person, always has their hunt in May, every year, and then they end up getting drawn for December... they might choose to trade to whoever got May, if that person allows it, that is..... but then again... they might just want to stick with it, and keep their options open, because in the past they had always done hunts in warm weather, with no snow in sight... and this would give them a bit of a change....

but anyhow... yeah...I think thats all i got on it for now..

Kindof sounds like Allison understands me a little bit..... funny thing is, I wasnt planning on participating in another hunt anyways. Well, it would be my second choice. My first choice would be to find out who all the people are that want to do a hunt and then see if they can mutually agree to a schedule. If that doesn't work, then I'd say we just do it randomly and have a drawing.
