1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

We drove around for 3 hours. We just can't figure which park, or park-like place.

Vasco - good insights. I believe you are onto something. I've played softball at Conway. It is a Playground. It is public property as Angel02 says. But, a park?

I hope a lot of people enjoy the football game!!!!

I believe that the numbers adorn the front door means the numbers lead you to the front of the park...as can be seen from the front of the park when you look out....

not actually on the door...but am wondering if there is dual meaning in them...

Is it named Conway Park? Or is it just Conway Rec Center? The first clue says it is in a PARK.

Park vs. Rec Center...been buggin' me for a week. The first clue mentions public ground AND park. Supposedly, the clue writer is a newbie. Only a couple years ??

well i am packing up the gang and heading out....see ya'll out there and good luck!

Ian...it will definitely be in a St. Paul Park....

Has the medallion ever been on public ground other than a park?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:16 AM Permalink

Hi Ian, Eags, and all you other "early" risers...

Ian, have you been out digging yet or are you still contemplating the park like most of us?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:16 AM Permalink
MushieW

Yes Fifth Horseman...but not since 1969

Vasco

Perhaps I'm too loose with the first clue, but I think the distinction was between a park and a golf course, aimed at excluding golf courses, not requiring a "park"

name. Conway is a park even if it is not a "park."

And speaking of the numbers. . . go to Conway and notice the HUGE numbers of the apartment buildings just south of the ball fields.

It is there. . .

Thanks MushieW. I'm going to have to consider myself an "iconoclast" because I believe that it is not in a park this year...

My vote is for the Capitol Mall.....

What peak would be glowing not far from the Conway Rec Center/Park? I lived over there for three years and can't figure that one out!

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:22 AM Permalink
Bubba

quarry=(thesaurus) pit, hole, where or what is covered pit we seek?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:24 AM Permalink
Vasco

Larry -

When did you live near Conway? Remember SunRay was remodeled not long ago, including the addition of the covered pyramidal atrium near where Minnesota

Fabrics and Bridgemans used to be.

MushieW

Fifth... I see your point but clue says park and they are not going to lie or try to fool you there... I believe the iconoclast clue means it will be at a park it has never

been hidden in before...out with the old and in with the new

Hi Cheryl

We've been digging, but not really into it. Mainly just to be out there. Can't quite put everything together.

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:26 AM Permalink
MushieW

Bubba...quarry is also something sought after....:) Remember folks they said PEAK...not dome...not just anything glowing....PEAK...like church steeple.... :)

VASCO:

Since Conway was a park in the past... do you think that "studying the past" would give them permission to use it now?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:27 AM Permalink
Bubba

Like that idea Mushie

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:28 AM Permalink
MushieW

Gotta go...good luck all! :)

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:28 AM Permalink
Vasco

Clue #4 used "blast" and Clue #8 uses "quarry." Does anybody know what used to be at Conway? Could it be a gravel pit/granite/etc. reference?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:28 AM Permalink
The Fifth Horseman

MushieW- I can see your point, however the first "half" of the first clue says "public ground". I think that the second half of the clue is telling us to stay away from

Como and Highland...

If it's at Conway, 9-5-4 could've been a reference to I-94 and Hwy. 5. It's in between them.

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:29 AM Permalink
Bubba

What could be round and white and stretched?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:29 AM Permalink
Bubba

Horseman I agree

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:31 AM Permalink
The Fifth Horseman

Come on Bubba, can't you figure that one out? You were smart enough to play in the NFL for all of those years...

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:32 AM Permalink
MushieW

Horseman...I agree too...but public ground is a no brainer...they don't want you to destroy private property around the park, etc...they try to protect the area...get

it...? :))

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:33 AM Permalink
Vasco

Bubba -

By the time they get to the 8th clue, there is always some reference to what the medallion is hidden in. I think the "white and stretched quite tight" language means it is

in a sock (too much like last year?) or a plastic bag (like a white Target bag?) or something.

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:34 AM Permalink
Bubba

The more I try to figure these clues out the more confused I become.

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:35 AM Permalink
MushieW

I think it is in a baseball...lots of game and home references in clues... etc... quarry is just simply something sought after...the treasure medallion....keep it simple.... :))

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:36 AM Permalink
Bubba

Thanks Vasco, yeah Horseman too many punches to the head but it was boxing instead.

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:36 AM Permalink
The Fifth Horseman

I agree with your thinking MushieW... But I think that it is inside of a softball... A baseball is just too small for that medallion...

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:38 AM Permalink
MushieW

ok horse...either works for me.... :)

Is Conway park, public or private???

I'm thinking that round and white and stretched tight is a reference to one of those pantyhose eggs - nice thing to hide it in....what do you think?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:40 AM Permalink
AllieGo

Round and white and stretched...a baseball, softball, a white balloon.

Round and white and stretched...a Condom?

What are the directions to Conway? I can't find it on my map. Thanks.

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 9:41 AM Permalink
Per Austreng

how could it be hidden in a baseball or softball? If you were to take the cover off of the ball, there is no way youre gonna get the meddalion inside unless you

reattach the skin to something else thats round. That would be incredibly lame.
