What is Geocaching?

Submitted by King Boreas aka Ian on

Flash Intro-"Geocaching"
6 minute Movie-"Searching for a cache"
Basic Info

  • Buy or borrow a Global Positioning System receiver. A basic unit is the Garmin eTrex GPS or Magellan GPS 315. Both cost about $100 and can be found at stores such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy or online at http://www.amazon.com
  • Find a cache near you at <http://www.geocaching.com> Enter a ZIP code and the site will list nearby caches. Select a cache, such as "Geocache by Ray" or "Arboretum One" and click on its "details" button. Write down the cache's coordinates and print out the description. Use the online mapping site link at the bottom of the page to get driving directions to the location.
  • While still at home, enter into your GPS receiver the coordinates of the cache as they are listed on the Web site. Coordinates -- such as N 39 degrees 24.661; W degrees 094 14.86 -- describe the latitude and longitude of the site.
  • Follow the driving directions until you can drive no closer to the cache and park your car. Follow the arrow on your GPS receiver as it leads you to the cache. Be aware that heavy tree cover can block the GPS signal. Once you leave your car, it could take anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes to find the cache.
  • The GPS signal will fluctuate once you are within 100 feet of the cache, so from that point on, you're on your own. Check around stumps and under rock and leaf piles. Remember that almost all caches are placed above ground, so no digging!
  • Congratulations! You've found the cache. Take an item, leave an item and record your experience in the logbook. Reseal the cache and put it back exactly the way you found it.
  • When you get home, e-mail the person who hid the cache and let him know you found it. Also, post a description of your experience on the cache's online page at <http://www.geocaching.com
     Have Fun !

dang, I think that's the weirdest story I've heard yet in geocaching circles. Wonder why the eagle dropped it anyway...

Maybe it was blaming you. lol!

Spent 4 hours on the new "Cupid's Trail" multi.. and the final stage has bad coordinates, I have no idea how auntiefindy found it, I'm guessing sheer luck. Sucks to waste 4 hours on an 8+ stage multi only to end up in failure. Got the final set from the guy and I'll try it again this evening, but I'm not optimistic...

Judging from the placement on the stages (and the fact that I found the 4th stage way out of place on my WAY to the 3rd stage) I'd say if you want to do this one, do it now, or it's going to be much more problematic in a couple months of wear and tear. I took pictures of all the stages, and if you get stuck, let me know and I'll send you the stage you're at. It's also much more than a 1.6 mile walk roundtrip, not that I'm complaining about that part.

my guess is you visit or end up at valentine lake?

KC0GRN

Yup, on the west side of the lake, just along the roadside, opposite of bethel college. The guy emailed me back, said I did have the right coordinates, but there's nothing at those coordinates.... just a couple trees and nothing there to hide a container, perhaps a micro, but I checked those spots.

I could've just had bad luck after 4 hours, but I got to know the guy's style a bit, which is disturbingly out in the open in some instances, another good reason to do it quick if you intend to. As mucluck would say, grrrrr....

The guy isn't giving me too much in the line of hints on the final either...

what the heck does his name mean anyway?

no idea... "hider of insane multicaches" would be my guess though. At each stage, you had to do a letter substitution or mathematical problem. Nasty.. coulda made life easier by just sending you to another cache with coords for the next. I'm honestly thinkin articabn's gps knowledge challenge was easier.

Great items in the cache. I just had to trade for one of them.

Congrats on you 666. I was wondering how you would celebrate that one. TFTC

Darnit Ian, I just finished one of your tough caches.. Why'd I have to try evil ways tonight?

Looks like a new one to fry my brain on. You know this is screwing up my DNF average.... It better be good medallion hunting practice.

Okay.. I checked the coordinates with the owner, and returned to the scene this evening, only to be as perplexed as I was last time I was here...

More disheartening than not finding the cache, I managed to lock my keys in my car, something I usually double check, of course the one time you don't... Ended up taking another long walk to a gas station to sheepishly phone home for help. So my 20 minute search became a couple hour deal... When help arrived, they asked "Well did you at least find the cache?"

So I'm upset with myself on a few levels tonight.

Figured I'd post this before Kitch got a chance.

Joel.

So sorry about your misfortune with the car keys. Ouch!

Courage.

Dangit man, just give me a hint of some sort... grrrrr.... I'd like to just give up on it, but I've invested way too much time and effort now. I swear his coords are off.. they have to be. I'll probably have to search that whole lakeside area.

Grrrrrr.... finally get a weekend I don't have to work, and now I get sick.... My luck, I'll be just fine for work on Monday...

Also wasted another hour out at the final on cupid's trail. Think I'm going to wait now until someone finds it, or someone else at least posts a dnf, if they're not too ashamed to admit defeat.

Otherwise, anyone else going to get sauced at Khan's? I'd happily meet up with you early at Valentine's Park (the location of the 7th or 8th stage) and give it a shot as a group.

Finally.. Sheesh that cache only took me.. 2 weeks.....

I swear the coords I gave the guy are the same I had in my gps, I even checked em the 2nd time I went out.... grrrr I shoulda went back and read that previous stage again, too many muggles around to check it though. Well.. at least that's over, even if it wasn't a clear victory on my side.

Next! looks like time for a event in washington, meeting with moun10bike. Apparently he's had some troubles lately in geocoin circles, trade or something that went bad, anyways I'm not holding my breath this time, but at least I'm hoping for a good meeting.

BTW Ian, the park looks in such a state of flux right now, I'm not sure if a cache would last here unless it was a micro (They have different trees tagged and I'm not sure if they mean to cut them down or what)

I got my truck washed at the downtowner yesterday and was gonna take a walk over there while it was having some detailing done but I ended up not having the time. I look forward to getting there this week!

Here's the entrance, not too amazing

Kind of an overview of the area. You can definately make out the PP building on the other side of the river, too bad most of anything pointing you here would also point you to mounds in a clue.

Another Pond and I think a sealed off cave at the end of the park. Perhaps this one is carver's cave? I know they mentioned one of the caves was used for storage, and the other one looks more like it was used that way.

Thanks CM. Was interesting to get out there and have a look at the place, I have no idea how much more work they'll be putting into it, so who knows how it'll change.

I'm wondering how they'll extend bruce vento trail to this place though, right now I believe it ends at the south end of swede hollow....

KLBB AM

That's my wife's favorite station for work. And it has been sold and will become a spanish language station.

it was too funny. I dropped him off and I turned on the station to see if he runs in the door and they start talking to him as he walks in--they didn't but...the station came in terrible/static! and I was right there!!!! so I drive home and it sounds just like an SNL AM talk radio skit! hahaha  Talking about Herbs today. Supposedly they sometimes give away tickets to basketball games to each caller that has a garden question.

Spanish eh? I happen to like some Spanish.

Brad,

I think they scrapped the interview. I can't find it. It's a fucked website anyway. The guy got me questions like a week before his "deadline"

June 1st became June 5th for the update. I hate sites with mispelled words and bad grammar. I'm boycotting all future interviews unless they're FTF with a hot chick.
