1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

There are lots of electrical poles/light poles out there. But I picked the ones on the north side and one on south side and started digging in the middle right across

from a green pole in the ground with numbers on it. I saw the drinking fountain but no ideas if that figures in there or not. Everyone else seems to have their own logic

about where its hidden.

ok everyone, I'm trying to be creative. Help me out...I was thinking the N. and S. poles AND the "pointer" could suggest the compass on the little peninsula at Como

Lake. There are trees lined upto that point. Clue 10 could easily be Conway, that's the obvious answer. However, Perry Como and Matthew Perry have the same

name. The clue does not say the park has to be the shared name (Perry). Could be suggesting Como Park. "orient" basically means east. There is an Estabrook St.

to Como Lake. The "quite clear" clue could be either the Golf club house on the other side of the street or the Conservatory on the hill. The "pointer" could also

mean the Space Needle at the State Fair, which is visible from some places around Como Lake. The "red object" could be the roof of the Pavillion on the Lake,

which is directly across from the compass. And here's the kicker - the hours for the grounds at Como Zoo are 9 to 5. The buildings on the grounds are open until 4.

Thus, "a 9 and 5 and SOMEWHERE a 4". That "somewhere" could mean the buildings. There are signs posted that the medallion is not located within gated

grounds at Como but that doesn't mean the rest of the park grounds.

This is so frustrating for me I live 200 miles away and am trying to relay hints from online to my sis in St Paul. I was at Conway last Sat. so I have a good idea of

how the park is layed out. WHY IS EVERYONE LOOKING FOR POLES????????? please help me!!

Noelle: Good advice to all! I don't want someone looking over my shoulder if I ever find the damn thing. I also think its very uncool to watch what someone else is

digging and I'm not even out there all night. I do get pms though, even though I'm male. At least according to my wife I do.

I agree that the 'valuable sign' is true value, but that was clue 7 when they were still trying to tell us the name of the park so maybe it is the Wilson Street thing and

nothing more...or not?

Cherokee I was thinking along your lines also, however I gave it up because I couldn't find any way to connect clues#4 & #5. Any Ideas there?

Shan, at this time it's the concensus that the 'two frozen places' from today's clue are the north and south poles. From that, we're trying to find poles at the park. Go

figure. Tonight's clue will give us the exact location for sure. But, it's fun to speculate until then.

CA Transplant doesn't the clue read "two frozen planes" isn't a plane a flat surface like in geometry. ice rinks are frozen planes, but are they equal size?

Wed, 02/03/1999 - 1:26 PM Permalink
Rogue S. Hunter

Its obvious why people originally thought that clue 11 refered to the Hockey rinks.

What else could it have been if "Planes" had been correct.

Shan Ski... they changed it... it weas a typo I guess.. now reads.. two frozen places

Well, Shan, when they first posted the clue it said 'planes', but then they changed it and said there was a typo! Now it says 'places'. Yikes! That's a big boo boo,

don't ya think, considering a million people are looking for this thing.

balloffire & Chris P. - go back to #19857. I've explained both there. Plus, I have a few more things about Como but those ideas are "stretched quite tight" like this

stupid medallion so I've haven't shared them yet. Want to see what the response is on #19857 first.

me I'm a euphorian with a small CI index . . . well I guess a real resident of gumption county wouldn't assume everyone who opposes him is from euphoria

I think flying down hill was in reference to Battle Creek, getting you to the east side of St. Paul, but don't get to close to the action, chances nil, Conway is maybe a

mile from BC

don't know why you are ditching Newell. The famous name and the "valuable sign" in Clue 7 could both be referring to the Ford plant (Henry Ford and

the big Ford oval sign facing Ford Pkwy). The 9, 5, and 4 in Clue 3 mean 2 things: the park is in a place where the KS95 radio tower is in sight (Newell),

and it means that the medallion is in a KS95 State Fair bag that is sealed and shrunk tight with a hair dryer (both are from Clues 3 and 8). See what I

mean?

I would like to thank the media for publicizing the location of the 'park' (or is it a park?) We had to work over seven days to get there, and now every clown in 14

counties gets directions. Oh well, at least the Conway Circus and Zoo is well stocked with entertainment.

IDIOTS with car scrapers, PLASTIC shovels and rakes, the WHOLE Pioneer Press, etc. I got quite a few laughs.

I talked to the Director of the 'park' and she wasn't really very helpful about logistics for the Re-Hash Bash. Did say that there's no outside electricity, tho.

I did very little digging, as I truly feel if it is buried, it would have been found. I'm not sure where I'm thinking, certainly not IN a tree, but that's my take on it. After

four days of turning over the same snow, shouldn't it have been found? (Pat P.--you may be the TRUE iconoclast.)
