Petey_Alchemist writes "Apple Insider is reporting that Apple will release a video iPod on October 12th, possibly in conjunction with the announcement of Apple's fourth quarter results. From the article 'Although details are scarce, sources who claim to have seen the new iPod describe it as being similar to Apple's 60GB iPod photo player, but several millimeters thinner. The device reportedly sports a smaller click-wheel akin to that of the iPod nano's, making way for a larger, higher-resolution color display that extends further down the face of the device.'
bwwwaaaahh...I've realized at least that Ipod is crap as they don't take the subscription plans like napster or rhapsody.

I am in the market for an iPod (or some mp3 player)and a palm pilot with wireless internet. can you look into these damned things. what's the best for the money type of thing. I read an article about an hp i6500 or something. pretty good supposedly and can you see how/where/expense to get the internet s**t for it. and i was thinking an iPod 4 gig or something. what's the best s**t?
A) Janus compatible so you can use "Rental/Subscription" services such as Napster to Go, Rhapsody to Go, Yahoo music Unlimited.....
 Something that's at least 20gb (you'd be surprised how fast you can fill up a player 4GB player. Especially if you have a music subscription service.
For a PDA, I don't know really. I just use an old Palm M130. All I use my PDA for is to keep lists and read news on the bus. I don't need all that fancy smancy wireless and whatnot for that.
Don't get me wrong, Ipod isn't a bad player or anything. I just don't like it's limitations or it's price.
Now, if you want to use a subscription service (pay a monthly fee to download as much music as you want to your MP3 player), you CANNOT use an Ipod.
Subscription payments are anywhere from around $5.00 a month for Yahoo music, to $15.00 a month for Rhapsody and Napster.
I've used Napster, and it sucked. I had a lot of problems with getting it to work on my player.
I've had no problems with Rhapsody and love it.
Can't speak for Yahoo, but they are cheaper. Many don't think Yahoo can stay at that price for ever and will eventually raise their price. Even at $15.00 a month. Not bad for access to over a million songs.
Bad thing about subscriptions are that the quality is not CD quality. I want to say that Napster is 128K files, whereas Rhapsody is 192K. I believe CD quality is 256K. Just something to be aware of.
So, if you want to BUY music at $1 a song, Ipod and Itunes is good. If you want to subscribe, Kitch and I and probably others can help you find something.
uncompressed cd quality is 1200kbps. anything above 160 is generally acceptable as an alternative to cd quality. i personally wouldn't get something i couldn't plug my own mp3s into, largely because i've ripped all my own cd's to a variable bit rate (the rate varies with how complex the sound is to get the best tradeoff between size and quality) file.
incidentally, i'd fill up a 20gig model. my mp3 directory is at 26.8gb, and when the other computer comes back, all the mp3s that were on it will be moving over to that directory too.
Yeah, sorry Kitch... wish I could help you there... but lets just say OTiS is on the burner with Comcast right now. More to follow when I can discuss the issue. :eyeroll:
can we give him back?

are they desperate for money or something?

Funny the responder talks about "choice", yet Apple's Itunes gives you no other choice but AAC.
What an idiot.

For MP3, I'm totally anti Ipod.
My opinion is to go with something that's....
