Patient is not something I've ever been accused of.

I used a stripper for part of it and didn't feel like it was worth the time. Sanding did about the same.

I really need to do that myself but it means stripping (well, I could probably scrape it off!) the existing paint and then sanding, etc.

one word comes to mind: belt sander. oh wait. that was 2 words.
