1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

now that I'm living in Lowertown I know that it is going to be hidden in Mears Park, I can't wait to go grab it up.

A few notes, first of all, my old neighbor is an employee of microsoft and ran the clues, hiding spots, what year it was hidden in each park etc. through a police

computer program and has given me some pretty interesting information. Second of all, I think it is a sigh of relief to realize that i am not the only one that has dreams

of 459 and dreams of being in conway when the snow was fresh... wait that wasnt a dream! anyways, i need the dates of next years hunt to get time off from work,

and in saying that, I really like highland next year. i hope to hear from someone, anyone, soon......

Hi Jake , the dates for the 2000 carnival are jan.28-feb.6,the winter carnival is always the last wknd of jan through the first wknd in feb.But if you would like the

official word go to the St.Paul Winter Carnival website at www.winter-carnival.com.(I'm hoping I got that URL right,if not just do a quick search it'll come right

up)So are you going to elaborate on what interesting stuff came up from your neighbor?

Hey all!! Its me again! Hope all are good. I am working right now (yuk!) I work untill midnight everynight at State Farm Insurance. FRENCHFRIES----I had a

beautiful baby boy 3-18-99 8lbs. 7 1/2 oz. 21 1/2 in. long. Ryan Robert. He is doing wonderful by the way! Anyways, Is the Patrick McGoverns thingy going down

this year? Last year, Rob and I actually showed up and saw you all in the window but we didnt know anyone and it looked like they knew everyone for years so I

got kinda shy and we left!!!! hehehehehe! Shy little me! Well, this year I may need a partner because there is no way we can get a babysitter at 12:00am everynight

so rob will have to stay home and I will have to go out after work!!! Let me know if anyone is interested!!!! I'll check in every so often while working this week!

BYE!!!!!!! I LOVE TO HUNT!!!!!!!!!!(for the medallion ofcours!!!) :)

Me again. Scribe, the computer printed out a list of hiding places for the next ten years! According to the program, there is some scientific way (or perhaps its a

coincidence) of hiding the coin. If the computer found no pattern, then it would say such, but as i said, it spit out a list of the next ten hiding places, and it said

highland next year. so until the clues state otherwise, thats where i will be spending my time. Anyways, 1999 was my first year of the hunt, and let me tell you, i did

pretty well. Ironically the guy i hunted with (a coworker) lived on conway ave. We were probably the first to dig in the park and dug up the first base about 15 feet

from the coin. I tell you what, it hurts. I have 2 ambitions in life, and finding the medallion is one of them! And incidentally, i am game for working as a team, because

my coworker was pissed off when he realized he had made fun of aaron neidorf about 2 minutes before he found it because he didnt have a shovel, so he wants

nothing to do with the hunt. so if you are interested, let me know. i look forward to hearing from someone....anyone...

contact with you all later! bye now! Amy

by the way I doubt that that kind of info would be that easy to come across. Are sure you know what you are talking about (highland park) Jake? :) I guess we will

see! Maybe you will be right! Amy

Hey cool, the more the merrier! We'll have to come up with a central meeting point,or is there already an official one ? I will admit to not always being in the

loop.Jake,it's funny about your experience last year because my friend and I were right on top (not literally) of the two guys who found it in Highland last time it was

hidden there!Like I stated before I don't mind sharing the $$$$$$ if we find it can I have the plastic coin?PLEASE??????? It is my dream to display it on my

mantel.Of course we could always pass it around year to year..........So what do you think the theme will be for 2000? Did the police computer have anything to say

about what its hidden in? Amy,is this your first child? I'm sending my second off to school this year, still have my baby at home though(he's three).

My other ambition? To race indy cars. I wanted to let you guys know that I may have access to a laptop during the hunt. And coincidentally (and rather

unbelievably) i had two finders sitting at the same blackjack table tonite. (93 at hidden falls and 91 at langford). i couldnt believe it, they both had a lot of good info

to tell me, because the clue writer actually talks to the winners. Anyways, i just cant wait until january, my last race is next weekend and college is all ill have!

Anyways, ill be visiting here daily if there is anything you have to say, i love talking about the hunt and cant wait. see ya!

There is way too much excitement about the hunt already! I just can't get into thinking about it this early. Last year a certain someone got me all pumped about it and

I was sleep deprived from excitement about 2 weeks before the first clue.

The addiction to the hunt will just have to wait!

Rush - It needs to stay there for a few months yet! We've been hunting for 28 years. Have been close many times. Can't think about it yet. Nope.

Scribe I have a question for you. In looking back at the postings on the medallion site for 1999, simple logic tells me that the medallion is hidden in the first snow fall

after the new year, what do you think?

So what did these guys say about talking to the clue writer?

Fri, 09/03/1999 - 11:44 PM Permalink
jakeinge

I am in my own home and i usually work weekends at treasure island casino, but i was supposed to race at brainerd this weekend and am off so i have plenty of time

on my hands, my dad found a leak in the transmission on my race car this morning and couldnt get it fixed, so i am going to miss my first chance at pro racing.

Oh, the clue writer in 1993 said that he had a newborn baby and wrapped the medallion in a daiper, drove by hidden falls park and just threw the diaper out the

window. I find that peculiar, did he write the clues after hiding it or what?

Fri, 09/03/1999 - 11:48 PM Permalink

Yup I think so too,if they hide in the first snowfall of the season it could be accidentally found way before the hunt, like last December when it was 70 degrees out but

we had snow before that.I think the first snowfall after Christmas or so.

Scribe

See I think the clue writer is snowin us on that one,how could he/she write specific clues(down to the paces)if he/she just goes around throwing it willy-nilly?

Fri, 09/03/1999 - 11:51 PM Permalink
jakeinge

It was also strange talking to the kid that found it in langford park, i think he was about my age and said that he was out with his boy scout troop and found it using a

plastic shovel. He said that someone told him that it hadnt snowed so they were surprised that the hunt lasted as long as it did.

Fri, 09/03/1999 - 11:52 PM Permalink
jakeinge

If you look at the 93 clues, all the final clue says is that it is near a sign. No paces, no specifics.

Fri, 09/03/1999 - 11:53 PM Permalink

I really believe that they hide it early.

Just the computer, they are 1 million times the intelligence of a human brain, and if a computer says highland, then i will take it seriously until the clues say the

medallion is somewhere else.
