I agree. Most architects agree as well. It's a weird classification that defines a spire vs an antenna. Put it in your design and it's a spire and it counts towards height.

That Taipei tower makes me hungry for Chinese take out.

That's about to be shoved to 2nd place anyway.

I never did get how adding a spire or "crown" or some other kind of facade gets you bragging rights for tallest building. If it were up to me, I'd only count a building's height at the final top story where people can stand.

yeah but if you do that, some fool would climb the spire to get the number. although i do agree with the principle of it.

Yeah, isn't there one under-way in UAE that's gonna top them all, and that's not fudging with any spires or anything?

Santa Claus

North Pole, Earth

Dear Santa,

I have been a good boy.

It really wasn't my fault what happened at Timmy's Office party. It was THX1138 who spiked the punch with too much Prune Juice. I can't help it if I drank 1138 glasses. It was so good---smelled and tasted just like skunk piss.

I thought it was funny when I put On The Search's Underwear on my head and danced the bow down on the bed while singing `hootchie cootchie man'. I didn't mean to break Timmy's palm pilot and don't know why Timmy would accuse me of assult with a candy cane.

I don't remember calling Clue Master's wife a screwed frog---even though she looked like one with green eye shadow and cream lipstick!

And when I threw up on me2's husband's scrotum, it was only because I ate too much of that rum filled candy.

After all that fun, I admit I was a little tired. So I fell asleep on my way home and drove my segway through my neighbor's rafter. I don't think that was any reason for my neighbor to call me a smoozed ass and have me arrested for public urination!

So, Santa...here I sit in my jail cell on Christmas Eve, all frolicking and slobbering. And I'm really not to blame for any of this assinine stuff. Please bring me what I want the most---bail money!

Sincerely and drunkardly yours,

mrmnmikey (Really a nice boy!)

P.S. It's only 1138 bucks!

I love watching modern marvels or those type of shows on the discovery channel about huge building and how they build them, very interesting in a nerdy sort of way.

only 900MM to build it??? damn.

edit: the residents of the top floors will just about to be able to join the mile high club without leaving home....

That was one of the best SNL's I've seen in a long time. Jack Black was awesome. Every skit was funny. Some of the new guys (and the new girl) are really good.

Quotes: Fashion Guy: Here's a tip: no straight man knows how to tie a bow tie. That's why they make these R.S.V.P. cards. Simply check "no, I will not be able to attend your stupid fancy-dress party" on the card, and all of your bow tie problems are solved. After all, it's not like it's the only time your sister will be getting married.

Funny how we were talking about 225 S6th yesterday and today I was presented with an opportunity to possibly manage the cleaning/maintenance department there. But it sounds like it might be a lateral move. My boss is going to see what type of $ they are looking at.

That would be kinda cool to manage the tallest building in Minnesota.

Anyways, for something completely different.

www.openoffice.org

OpenOffice.org 2.0 is out now. For those familiar with Microsoft Office, OpenOffice has continually been improving interoperability with MS Office files, 2.0 so far seems like a vast improvement on this.

I've been a big fan of open source projects, and have found this one to be well worth the download and use, not to mention it's free.

How to make an ice candle

http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/5796082.html

1 Fill a 1- to 5-gallon bucket with water.

2 Place outside on a cold night. In the morning the bucket should be frozen on the sides and across the top but usually not across the bottom. Don't let it freeze solid.

3 Drill a hole in the top to drain the water, or flip the bucket, remove the ice form and dump out the water. The upside-down form, open on what's now the top, will be the candleholder.

4 Some garden stores sell forms for ice candles of different shapes.
