2006 Noodle Synopsis

Submitted by mrmnmikey on
Clue #1

Treasure hunters swarming amidst global warming
Make it hard to park our loot.
Look for snow and ice, enough to suffice,
To shorten your winter pursuit.

Clue #2

Son of Pear, hometown fare,
The nut of this year’s quest.
Sweetest patty, never a baddie,
Covers the prize at rest.

Clue #3
Men with a garter should have been smarter
Than to mix drink with their vulcanic activities.
You would be wise to look for the prize
By taking up a child’s proclivities.

Clue #4
For the brave of heart, it's time to start
Searching hill and glen.
Pitch a tent if that's your bent
But stay within your ken.

Clue #5

If you're aerobic and hardly tree-phobic
You might make your outing pay
Don't be left in a lurch, do your research,
This could be your red-letter day

I don't like the way I did this first clue, and will change the format on clue 2 to include proper names and times.

Gotta be in some old snow......OTiS

It's not in a park. -Evil Doer

Buzzing=bees

The letter B? First letter in the park? Battle Creek?-OT

cant be the first clue. It doesnt say st paul park, or ramsey county or anything?????-Payme

Bwaaah. Global warming. That's funny.

In the paper recently Kate Kelly blamed the warm winters lately on global warming.

Back in the late 1890's they cancelled a bunch of stuff because of warm temps.-THX1138

Maybe they are just trying to add a bit of a twist this year to get people pumped up.-OTS

But nearly every year the clues start out by narrowing it down. Either Ramsey County or St. Paul...-MOM

it's definetely A) a new clue writer or old cluewriter trying to be sneaky. -Tim

I've been looking at some past year first clues, and St. Paul park has been mentioned often in Clue #1. Occasionally the reference isn't made until Clue #2-OT

Enuff snow and ice to suffice.

Or is that what ittiz in? Like enuff ice and snow to cover it up, like a snowball, or hunk, or something like that?-Green

I think they did say it was going to be in a park. They said we're making it hard for them "to park" the loot.

Wait. No. So, maybe that means not in a park, since ittiz "hard to park." But somewhere near by where there's lots o'snow?

Where's Scribe when you need her?

Or, piled up snow where parking lot(s) have been plowed? Now, that sounds more like it!

Do they dump snow in McMurry Field?-Green

One year at Cherokee, the medallion was found near a fire hydrant near the curb, in the piles of snow left by the plows-Terry

That's what they're saying, park (as in noun and verb), and snow/suffice = plowed up snow. I betcha.

Okay. That one's aced. Gimme'da next one!-Green

I think "hard to park" is the part that could end up giving us the biggest hint.

Often times people don't like a certain area because there is nowhere to park,-Tim

I don't either, Ter, but I think that noodling really had some merit.

What if because of the swarm of folks out enjoying the nice weather in a in a certain, high volume, popular park the Hiders had a tuff time finding parking to park to get out and park The Puck?

What if the clue is just telling us the strait stuff? Lots o'folks in a park made it hard to park to park the puck? -Green (reply to Terry about the park people not caring about parking.)

Maybe that would mean a downtown park...Downtown Dave would be so disappointed now that he's not downtown any longer.

Or a smaller park/rec center? Marydale? North Dale? Conway?-Terry

BC, dog walking area?

HUH?????

I THINK I GOT SUMPIN'!!!-green

I think green is right that they just had a tough time hiding it because people are out with the warm weather, and it made it tuff to find a place to hide it without being seen. I'd say it's in a ice block in a remote area, away from the more poular parks.-mrmnmikey

Main Entry: hard

Part of Speech: adjective 1

Definition: rocklike

Synonyms: adamantine, callous, compact, compacted, compressed, concentrated, consolidated, dense, firm, hardened, impenetrable, indurate, indurated, inflexible, iron, packed, rigid, rocky, set, solid, stiff, stony, strong, thick, tough, unyielding-Diggin4it

Chair-O-Kee has like no parking lots, does it? Not a one. But what would be plowed there then? -Green

I think this is the what it's in clue.

Packed in snow and ice enough to sufficiently cover the medallion.-Terry

The swarm is hockey right? Ice rink? Are they bringing in snow for the snowcarvings?-mrmnmikey

Or like the "bottom" part of BC -- where the tiny parking lot is hardly ever open in the winter. Off of 61, where you can walk up through the park to Upper Afton along the creek (ice)??? -MOM

the swarm is lacrosse. in short lax. lax, thats the airport in la. I think it's in a piece of luggage.-Tim

Snowcarving is in Roseville this year.

...and they will be next to the Oval skating rink-Diggin4it

Anagram of "hard to park" dark ho trap-OT

rec center at BC, Theres snow to suffice to ski on, and ice enogh to suffice to skate on there.-mrmnmikey

a winter pursuit would be like running in snow? Cross (lacross)country skiing?-mrmnmikey

Swarming is a military strategy in which a military force attacks an enemy from several different directions and then regroups. Important aspects of swarming are mobility, communication, firepower, and unit autonomy. Recently RAND has published several papers suggesting that the United States Military adapt swarming techniques. From PP-I like soup

Global Warming= Vulacans

Snow and Ice= Queen of Ice and King of Snow-from pp-mrx234

I'm guessing in a park and at some place where snow melts slower. So either shady areas, woods, or maybe on the north side of something.PP-Piolots13

Read Soucheray's article in tomorrows paper. "It hasn't been this warm in advance of a carnival since the late 1800's, when an ice castle or two melted due to global warming." So for you nits that don't think he writes the clues, THINK AGAIN.-Jake

I was kind of half thinking that clue one was referencing "what it's in" since it really didn't give much for *where*. But clue 2 HAS to be what, so back to figuring out where there's snow and ice to suffice!

mrmnmikey [2fc0f9a]- Jan 23, 2006 4:09 am (#2847 Total: 2847)

I like this clue! I got Highland as my park! It could still be "IN" the snow and ice and Pearson giving away the park.

Terry [2fc7f47]- Jan 23, 2006 4:57 am (#2855 Total: 2856)

I still believe clue one is telling us it's buried in snow and ice enough to cover it and keep it as safe as possible with warm weather predicted.

It could be in the wrapper and then in the middle of a snow/ice ball in a pile of snow somewhere.

I have a new noodle for clue # 1:

I keep going back to "swarming" Makes you think of bees or the letter B. When I look at County Road B in Roseville the only park adjacent to Cty Rd B is Villa Park. (NW of McCarrons Lake)

New Daddy [7d4e68db]- Jan 23, 2006 5:37 am (#2869 Total: 2974)

I agree Terry no mention of capital city yet, so could be anywhere in county.

Ice could refer to it being buried in the deeper crusty, icy layer of snow. But with today's clue so specific to what it is in I think yesterdays deals more with ice in the park.

me2 [2fc0fac]- Jan 23, 2006 7:48 am (#2879 Total: 2974)

Terry [2fc7f47]- Jan 23, 2006 11:09 am (#2932 Total: 2975)

ThoseMedallingKids [2fc0fb0]- Jan 23, 2006 11:23 am (#2947 Total: 2980)

Clue 2 could be easy for a few reasons. Those that are intimidated by us, or feel like they're not that good at hunting, get an easy clue to figure out in the beginning to get them feeling good and wanting to get out or follow more. Plus the writer could know that since it's the second clue, we'd tear the thing apart trying to find the hidden subliminal messages, when there isn't any. We'd go crazy on a wild goose chase.

over the past 4 years(since boxmeyer retired as clue writer) there have been on average 3.2 hints by the 2nd clue.

clue #1

2005 1 hint

2004 1 hint

2003 2 "its parked among us" as in a park, among leaves, and "Faith be anew" by churches

2002 1

Clue #2

2005 3 hints. park name, water, and path in park.

2004 3 what it was hidden in"evil green donut", street name , and a landmark in park Island

2003 1

2002 1

So there should be at least 2 hints in one of the clues so far.

Yes, I know that the fairgrounds are in Maplewood - but they are not owned by Maplewood - they would be Ramsey County?

By taking up...

At first I was thinking that you would have to do what the kids do to find the prize, but that doesn't really make sense. Unless like Vino said, one crawls around.

However, you could think of the phrase "by taking up" as lifting. Maybe it is under something that kids use.

glen

"narrow valley," 1489, from Scottish, from Gaelic gleann "mountain valley" (cf. Welsh glyn). Common in place names, cf. Glenlivet (1822), a kind of whiskey, named for the place it was first made (lit. "the glen of the Livet," a tributary of the Avon); and Glengarry (1841) a kind of man's cap, of Highland origin.

Mot sure if this was posted yet or not... My biggest impression of the word is where it is originated from, more so than what portion of the definition you use, although I would use :inclination

BENT

1 Pronunciation (bnt)

v.

Past tense and past participle of bend1.

adj.

1. Altered from an originally straight or even condition: pieces of bent wire.

2. Determined to take a course of action: I was bent on going to the theater.

3. Chiefly British Corrupt; venal.

n.

1. A tendency, disposition, or inclination: "The natural bent of my mind was to science" Thomas Paine.

2. A transverse structural member or framework used for strengthening a bridge or trestle.

bent 2 Pronunciation (bnt)

n.

1. Bent grass.

2. The stiff stalk of various grasses.

3. An area of grassland unbounded by hedges or fences.

[Middle English, from Old English beonet (attested only in place names).]

The other thing I'm feeling is that the 2nd part of the clue is saying nothing more than to settle in on your one park ("go on -- stay there 24/7 if you want - pitch a tent) but stay within the areas that are pertinent....which I think will be revealed in future clues.

    Main Entry: 1hill

    Pronunciation: 'hil

    Function: noun

Etymology: Middle English, from Old English hyll; akin to Latin collis hill, culmen top

1 : a usually rounded natural elevation of land lower than a mountain

2 : an artificial heap or mound (as of earth)

3 : several seeds or plants planted in a group rather than a row

    4 : SLOPE, INCLINE

#2 an artificial heap or mound! Come on! They are pointing to Highland in the obvious sense of the clues, but they really mean the Mounds!

Plus you have the "glen" down below and pitch a tent is a reference to the Native American tee-pees and "brave of heart" = Indian brave!

You can't neglect clue #3 - Childs Rd. is right there

Proclivities are a slope or incline

Let's go to the mounds, y'all!

Battle Creek does seem to be referenced in clue number one with the swarming one thought is the battle reference, could also be the yellow and black striped tower?? Battle Creek is up an incline (proclivity=inclination) from Childs Rd.

Search "high and low" (hill and glen)

Pitch a tent if you want, but stay in that line of sight. (Pitch could also be horseshoes.)

so heres my idea, there's a child's slide at highland. it's actually a elephant and fairly new looking. well at the top there's a little pair of binoculars. (look for it using a child's proclivities). You can go and look through them, and see that area of the park. If it's there, I think it will be in that part. And right below that (west) area of the park, you can see Pearson's on 7th. So pitch a tent there.. and search the area you can see with those binoculars. There's crap ton of snow and ice. As well as mounds of plowed snow.

If it's Highland-- I like that fit.

Does anyone give merit that Hillsdale & Glenridge run right into Battle Creek. Also if you were Brave of Heart would you go to Battle. There also is the Rec center at BC plenty for kids to do there.???????

Brave of Heart could mean you are a Knight? McKnight Ave in BC

"The golf course features bent/poa greens, tees and fairways"

in reference to styles of golf course grass. Is it for a golf course nearby?

Heres some stuff from medallion central website.

Each of the clues has made reference to something along 7th street. The Swarm plays at the X located on the corner of 7th and Kellogg. PearsonÂ’s Candy is on 7th. AlaryÂ’s Bar is on 7th and the ChildrenÂ’s museum is located on 7th. I also believe there is potentially a theme regarding Bears. The newest attraction at the ChildrenÂ’s Museum is the Berenstain BEARS. AlaryÂ’s bar where the VulcanÂ’s got into trouble is also a Chicago BEARS bar on Sundays. The ad campaign for the Pearson Mint Pattie features a Polar BEAR

as long as the medallion ends up at Highland or BC, I am going to have to say this could be the best clue we have seen in a long time!

I'm suprised no one (atleast that I saw) said anything about the obvious, albeit silly word play combining the 2 words "hill" and "and"...

    hilland=highland?

Holiday ("red letter day") Station is at McNight and Lower Afton at the border of Maplewood and St Paul. "Not left in a lurch" could mean not to the left (west) in St Paul, but in Maplewood.

    I know I can't mix clues 2gethor...but grrr..

well, if the hunt is supposed to have us scratching our heads, why not? wouldn't be the first time its happened. battle creek 1995 for instance where the first letter of each clue stanza created a "clue within a clue" according to boxmeyer.

I'm just throwing this out there - I know it's a stretch, but my husband noodled this.

Red letter - there is a red letter K on every box of Kelloggs cereal. And Kellogg cereal is based in Battle Creek, Michigan

When I read the new clue, I'm always seeing a hidden message if "If you don't do this". Please tell me I'm not crazy, but they did the same think in 2004 in Phalen with Its a Prank.
