going to be 105 here again today - but I can't sneak out to go to the river  however I will be BBQing with the wading pool tonight.

I feel bad for my boyfriend - says on yahoo 114 in Citrus Heights today and he has an outdoor campaign party he's working. :frown:

BBQing with a wading pool?

I wouldnt think that a pool tastes all that good.... you should try hamburgers instead. :goofy:

ha ha.. actually I marinated tri-tip 2 different styles, and chicken with chimicurri and some with a wine/garlic/herb

doing veggies, garlic bread, corn on the cob, meat all on the grill..

then top it all off with some strawberry shortcake.

the wading pool part is awesome - put chairs in the pools (i have two) and you just sit around with your feet nice and wet.

tri-tip...most minnesota people have no ungodly idea of what this is....

but....I'm here to help....

little butcher shop...just about block north of university on rice street...

one of the best steaks I've ever bought....its damn good...

only thing better is "NAMELESS" at morelli's
Mon, 07/17/2006 - 10:47 AM Permalink
KITCH

oh...and tri-tips are like mini steak roasts...
Mon, 07/17/2006 - 10:48 AM Permalink
Wicked Nick

Ah yes.... Morelli's.... I know the place and the people "well"...

Also know about the other place you speak of, on Rice....
Mon, 07/17/2006 - 12:53 PM Permalink
KITCH

nick...

go to the place on rice....buy a brisket...

brisket is 2.19lb ...I get it for 1.99 as I buy 50lbs a shot...

anyways would cost you about 20bucks.....

toss it on a charcogrill put all the coals on one side...put the brisket on the otherside with a pan of water under it....lower temp the better...

num num nummy!!!

12 hrs later...better than steak...and you can have all your buddy's over....

beer all day long just to sit next to a grill you need to look at about 5 or 6 times...

Kitch - you are correct, I think it's mostly a CA thing (there are a lot of those!)

when I was living in Texas, I couldn't find tri-tip either, until I came across a butcher who had cut out here.

I think it's actually a part that many butchers leave on the bottom sirloin???

identifying a tri-tip

all I know is that marinated in a bloody mary sauce makes it one of the best meals I've ever had.

marinated in a bloody mary sauce

interesting --gotta recipe?
Mon, 07/17/2006 - 3:16 PM Permalink
Wicked Nick

I hear ya on the bloody mary sauce deal.... good stuff there! :ooh:

My dad's got this kick where he sees something done on one of those backyard bbq shows, and thinks he can out do it.... which is usually the case, after 2 or 3 tries..... so I wait until he perfects a recipe, and then I steal it and make it even better, and piss him off.

yeah - get a bottle of the pre-made mary mix (I like the trader joe one) and take your meat and poke lots of holes in it - cover it completely in the bottle of marianade in a baggy and massage it - then toss it in the fridge over night to soak in.

when you are getting ready to grill it - roll it in a mix of crack blacked pepper corns for a yummy crust.

I know someone just asked, but does anyone know the dates of the medallion hunt yet?

Or if not, when do we typically find out for sure?

I want to make sure I find out asap so I can request it off.

I'm going to try it...
Tue, 07/18/2006 - 10:47 AM Permalink
Love4Vino

you do that.

and perhaps you can add some olive oil to it and make a not too repulsive salad dressing..

but that is about all it's good for. The VA legal limit in a wine is about 100x's higher than a persons taste threshold - so they can legally bottle this stuff - however, it's bad -really really bad.

Now, Vino might be a little prejudiced.... and she does have quite the palate for food and wine. Half of the things she talks about I've never heard of.

I haven't tried $3 buck chuck, but I saw a story on 60 minutes about it. It was getting alot of buzz because it was getting good reviews AND it was cheap. Apparently they buy the grapes from the same vineyards that the spendy wineries do, except they buy the rejected grapes that the other wineries pass on. Of course the other wineries thinks this practice is horrible. But really for the AVERAGE consumer who doesn't know squat about wine, it tastes good and is inexpensive.
Tue, 07/18/2006 - 2:18 PM Permalink
Love4Vino

no, they don't buy grapes. non of it is actually crushed / fermented at the bronco facility that makes it into $2 chuck.

They buy bulk wine that the spendy wineries kick out,(during the grape glut for as little as $1 a gallon) cause no matter how perfect you think you are making wine - there is always a batch (or 2) that doesn't turn out to be what you want it to be.

Often in the case of 2buck chuck - they buy much of the 'hard press' wine (when pressing grapes - you first catch the free run = best quality, then you have a soft press = 2nd best - then you have a hard press = 3rd.)

The hard press has most of the contact with the final skins and seeds - making it tannic and often more bitter - also when you look into a top of a press tank - you can see an oil film on the top, cause often the grape seeds get damaged and release their oil.

Charles Shaw was a winemaker who prided himself on quality. I am betting he is turning over in his grave - knowing what the Bronco Wine Co. has done to his name and reputation.

Reviews really mean nothing anymore. Infact people who were 'esteemed' such as Robert Parker, and Dan Berger can't be taken seriously now, cause so many other places have taken to reviewing wines.

There is a wine club called the 'double gold' medal club (something like that) - that offers people memebership where they send you a few bottles of wine amonth that were rated 'double gold' by their wine experts.

I'm not positive, but I'm fairly confident I could pee in a bottle - call it chardonnay - send it to them, and it would get a double gold.

it's a crock to sell more wine.
Tue, 07/18/2006 - 3:17 PM Permalink
Love4Vino

for a decent bottle under $10 try the

Chateau Beauregard - Rhone blend (i think it's at cost plus for $3.99 a bottle)

Jest Red - from Belevedere is $10

also Pastiche from RH Phillips is under $10 a bottle

all are incredible wines made inexpensively.

Columbia Crest (washington wine) does an ok job with their whites, and some of their reds (cab - merlot) are fantastic too.

you don't have to pay alot for a good bottle - but please please please don't drink the two buck chuck.

heh. sorry. I just hate that. hate hate hate it. I worked for a company a few years ago - Quail Ridge, we had a great reputation. When the place closed (due to the glut) the same B$(%)$d's who bought the Charles Shaw name, also bought our name.

They are planning a 'value' program with the label now... it just makes me heart sick to watch them bottle crap and sell it to the public under a label and reputation they didn't earn.

my dream place - wine and caves.

now if it were just walking distance to an aqua lake/ocean with white sand beaches and lots of sun...mmmmmmmmm

wish I could do it here in the sandstone except real estate here is a million $$ (castle royal sold years back for a mil!)

I have a couple rocks/lavastone from this vineyard -- good wine

the pictures don't do this place justice. The tasting room is up on the hill and the cave is directly under it. We had to walk/ride around and down under on a path along a wooded valley. There is a creek that runs right through the middle of it. This cave was a 30 minute drive into the middle of nowhere, USA! very cool!

I love caves, man....(not to be confused with cavemen...i'm not into them)

theres still a few that are opened up down by the old brick yards.... you need to go a ways back up through trees and all kindsa other crap, way off the main path, to find em though...

Still kinda mad - every time I drive past it - that they closed off that big one under the highbridge.... lots of good memories in that one....

our cellars are built into the side of the hillside -although not technically a cave. Some of our other facilities - like Quintessa are total caves.

beach is 20 minutes away, river is 2 min away.
