Matty B\'s is the home of the Cooler Crew. We\'ve got a party going on every evening from 8 until the clue is released. Sunday night, if the hunt goes that long, the bar will be open but food will not be available.
Clues:
Clue No. 1 (Sunday, Jan. 21)
Welcome ice and snow and temperatures low
There’s no time for cold feet!
For searchers’ pleasure we’ve parked the treasure
Where nature lovers each other greet
Clue No. 2 (Monday, Jan. 22)
Boreas\' vast realm can overwhelm
Even diggers used to the long haul
So here\'s advice to put your hunt on ice:
Look no farther than good old St. Paul
Clue No. 3 (Tuesday, Jan. 23)
Hunters can be surly but in clue-time it’s early
Be safe, friends, and in the hunt revel
Near land that is high the treasure is nigh
Vagueness rules and that’s on the level

That worked for me but the others sucked big time.
Whats the clue?.... um, er dang, thats next week :frown:
I was just thinking about that- here is taking it a step forward
2002-MERRIAM- Hidden under nothing but a thin layer of melting snow, sitting right at 2nd base on a baseball diamond.
clue writer said he'd NEVER place it in a park this size again
it was hidden in the open
the theory that the medallion was 'dropped' after the hunt had begun was up for discussion because supposedly the medallion was stuck to a foil pringles/chip top with only tape.
theme- ?? mmmm not really
history - ?? not really any - just pinpoints a church and the school
clues are straight forward and to the point - you see this and you see this and you see this- one clue/one thing in the park
2003- COMO-Frozen in some ice in the middle of a big wooded area where none of the clues would actually guide you to.
went to the extreme from the prior year, placing it in the woods instead of in the wide open
and supposedly placed it when there was NO snow on the ground
then we got dumped on during the hunt
the clue writer becomes humorous at this point with his clues - "vultures"
an additional clue for this hunt was in the rules. The medallion will not be on Capitol grounds.
theme- ??
history - crosby gates & Ann Bilansky
some of the clues were straight forward but this year there were some far offbase ideas thrown in the mix
2004- Phalen- Green doughnut, need I say more?
cluewriter did the same as the prior year- hid it in a wooded area of the park
BUT, not to deep in the park - clues pinpointed a little better than the year before - he's testing his skills and tweaking a bit by using an anagram and bible verse -thinking outside the box a bit
and the hiding spot was techniqually easier to get to than the prior year
The clue writer had a theme this year- comic book
light snowfall again this year
history - Edward Phalen
- overall this shoulda been the perfect hunt if it wern't for WHAT it was hidden in.
2005- Crosby-Under a piece of bark in a wooded area.
I think the clue writer was trying to tweak his skills.
History - Thomas Crosby
went with the same theory as the previous 2 hunts and placed it in a wooded area
didn't hide it in anything? so food would never be a factor
2006-Battle Creek- Covered by some snow on the side of a hill.
now whats sorta interesting here is that a candy wrapper was used! um, duh! didn't he learn the first time that animals can smell. So he took a minor chance, placing it outside of the wooded area where hopefully no animal will find it.
He took it out of the woods - he's feeling a little more relaxed after that incident in 2002. feeling that its ok to not hide it so hard, but in the end learning that once again, people do find it in 6 clues.
theme - spoof on vulcans
history - pearson nut roll & indian conflict
both meant the same thing - hilly/side of a hill
in the brow of a hill you will find
you may knit your brows on this one
And if the clue writer is not very good that knocks Joe Soucheray out of the running.
Actually, I sort of disagree. At the time the thing was hidden, there was no snow and according to the explanations, it was just sitting under a tree at the bottom of the pit. By clue 3 or 4 I believe people had already checked that spot, and if it wouldn't have snowed, this might have been the shortest hunt in history. It was only through twists of fate that Phalen went to 12 clues.
that Don Quiote and windmills is still over my head
Ares pointed out, and I have to agree, that on Battle Creek, out of 10 clues -8 were references to things in the park and only 2 were references to NEAR the spot -I found the same idea with Phalen.... lots of references to things in the park but very little on NEAR the spot. That goes for Como too. Triple E and such - lots of clues for things IN the park but not necessarily NEAR the spot -
and then there is that one clue per hunt that is far away -
Como: the Le Nord Toilet school ::rolls eyes::
Battle Creek: the highway 61, point douglas road and even Woodbury being the clues that were so far away from the actual spot
Crosby - Pike Island was NO WHERE NEAR the actual spot and shoulda never been in clue 11 but maybe clue 4 or 5. Pike Island clue woulda taken me further away from the hiding spot.
Merriam - the only good 'far away clue' since this writer began- the church steeple- it was 2-3 blocks away BUT you could see the steeple cross at least
Phalen - Sherwood was on the other side of the park :frown: the bouncing balls didn't mean the balls on the wall at the far end of the park? :::rolls eyes::
MY POINT: the clues are mixed up- clue 11 may not bring you close to the spot but get people to the park that still didn't know what park. You can't assume that each clue will bring you closer to the spot! Just figure out the park and go to town digging is all one can do with this writer!
Find Mom at the Pre-dig Gig to get yours!
Can you believe it's been 10 years!?!?!?!?!?!?!
It wasnt anyplace - top or bottom of the hill - until the last day.... :goofy:
Like the dots you get when you take pics of the sun...
And yes, that is the most likely reason for the artifact showing up on the picture. Still, can't deny it's a blue light in the area that the medallion was eventually found at.
I still like the conspiracy theory edge to it though, you don't get a lot of photographic evidence in the hunt to mess with.
I mean like I've never seen a blurry image of a spotter yet (hoping from something big footish).

Joe
what Target were you guys at last night?
I was at the Midway Target around 5-ish

I'll see if I can find you a couple pics that I took later OT.
The really pathetic thing is that I remember when the "old" bridge was built. Closest bridge across the Mississippi was the railroad bridge. Now that bridge was a trip! My drivers training instructor took everyone across that before you passed the test.
When they built 494 they used the Church St. corridor in SSP. Then they connected up to highway 100, which is now called 110. I still call 110 highway 100 which can be really confusing if I'm giving directions. They burned down all of the houses along Church St. to clear it. My friends and I spent many hours sitting on the hill watching houses burn. :worried:
So I've outlived a steel bridge. lol
We picked up a few at the time they were giving them away, but I have no idea where they are now.
I collect historical bricks OT- so if you ever have a spare stockyards please don't hesitate to send it my way
Eags - I live at 11 - you musta had a nice view of the city from one of the bedroom/back windows! my daughters x-friend lives at 37 now. They have put quite a bit of cha-ching into that place since the dad died a few years back.
41 Alice- a young couple with 2 small children live there now - I think the man teaches history at Macalester. I'd love to talk with you and hear your stories on the park and neighborhood. will you be at the pre-dig?
they must have changed the house number from 40 to 41? that would make sense, since they are right next to each other on the same side of the street.
I won't be able to be in town for the hunt this year. I live 400 miles from there (hoping to change that this summer!) and was hoping to get back for the gigs and hunt, but have other things pressing that are keeping me here right now.
I'll try to scan some photos of 37 and 40/41 from "back in the day". I was three years old when we moved out of that house in 1956, but my grandparents lived at 40 for another seven years and I recall a lot of overnights at grandma's where we even slept on the balcony on the back of the house, looking at downtown and the stars.
