Terry

me2 has a post in her cooler chicks thread with a link "sexy man" in post #2066.

When one clicks on that link, one's private message box comes up.

I don't know how that works, but I have gotten a private message from someone who was concerned their own private messages were somehow linked and viewable by everyone.

Anyone have an explanation as to how that link creates the launching of the private messaging system?

it was strange...very strange..

I also didn't like the fact that her name was changed...

is that part of our "rules"??

• Impersonating Members and Accessing Other’s Accounts: You may not impersonate another board member or create an account for the purpose of provoking other users. This includes creating an account similar to another member as to confuse others by the similarity in names. Accessing or using someone else’s account or attempting to access another member’s account is strictly prohibited.

I'm not sure why she changed it.

Note of significant interest to you. I'll be unveiling our trial member feature very soon. This I am sure will be of particular interest to Cooler Crew. This will be a full trial, no restrictions of functionality for 30 days. I am sure that a lot of medallion hunters who are not members will take advantage of this, and hopefully will convert to paid membership. I have no plans to be restrictive of that but just ask that your group make every attempt to convince these trial members to convert to paid members. The Trial will not work with existing members (either never paid registered users or expired paid users... totally geared to New users.) This is not public knowledge yet so please be discrete with this information. You may discuss this with the other leaders and hosts of Cooler Crew, but again please ask that they respect the confidentiallity of it until I formally announce the program.

Thanks

Tim

I'm thinking this could be effective on luring people from the PP site.

I say NO!!!!

PP is full of jerks!!!!

IMHO..I'm pissed...

its not going to lure paying forum posters and you guys know it.

We'll still be set to registered members only right? I don't think he'll override that.

KITCH

doesn't matter...

if he opens it up to "trial" users it would be a bad mistake.

these people don't care as its not a topic that they will post year around.

they are happy with a 30 day grace period and will never show up til next year.

we are nothing more than a guidebook during the hunt.

IMHO when we discuss the "clues" its of value and should be paid for right off the bat.

$10 is not a lot of money for people who take time off work, buy buttons, shovels, lanterns, etc...

heck if he wants a trial period do it during AW's hunt...same coolercrew members will hunt than...and not so crazy with nutballs.

Um, yes it does matter. If they can't get in here what's the difference?

They can surf outside of here I guess.

I would totally agree if they had access to in here. Those people won't care. It would be a perfect situation for them. Post for free for the only time they wanted it.

I would stage a protest if that happened.

But thinking about this further, we can't dictate what Tim and Mark do for the entire board - and they are working to increase paid membership.

Speaking of membership - can someone pick up the hosting costs this year? I could do it if no one else is able to do so. We're a little tight financially at our house this year.
Mon, 12/17/2007 - 12:49 PM Permalink
Terry

Thinking about this further - let's say Tim opens this up for 30 days.

We end up with new people. We can still not allow the hunter fred types as he would be banned based on our code of conduct.

I would still prefer to not have it open up at hunt time, but I don't want to dictate what Tim and Mark are doing either.

Weighing pros and cons. (Can ya tell? I have way too much work to do today.) :sheepish:

We wouldn't be dictating anything to Mark or Tim. Our folder is set to paid members only. I would assume that those folders that are set up that way would remain sealed. What would open up are all the other threads that don't have access lists. Right now they only have access to a few discussions including my welcome thread.

HiDeeHo... I was just out and about the forum and decided to pop in on ya'll and say Hi.

On the Free Trial thing, I would not force you to allow them in here. The way I coded the functionality it will in fact be easy enough to keep them out. I certainly understand you not wanting freeloaders in here, just for the sake of getting clues and winning the hunt. I just mentioned it to CM as a heads up because I knew it might impact your folder.

Personally I don't want any 30 day wannabees. I am doing everything I can to insure that its a one time trial for people, I definitely do not want people using this to get out of paying. Trust me when I say I am going to be quite brutal in my treatment of anyone I catch attempting to game the system. The entire reason I have not released the code yet is because I am constantly looking at it, and thinking about more ways to trap gamers and automatically deal with them.

Everyone knows I've been resistant about even doing this at all. So with all that said, I assure you that I will do everything in my power to protect the integrity of your folder and the hunt. You never know, I may just show up myself and win it

I got a request from me2....who got a request from jake to try to set up a thread for the NTFCF movie...

jake is the local distrubitor for the dvd's...anyways...

jake wants to sell them and wants a thread...

personally I say NO...I don't want a bunch of selling threads...

like the THG, mappys' book, buttons, this, etc..

thoughts?
Sun, 12/23/2007 - 9:46 PM Permalink
Terry

I wouldn't want another thread to monitor during the hunt.

It would be best if that were either set up as a new member folder or part of the Welcome Hunter thread outside this one.

Maybe then a link to that thread or folder in the current year's hunt thread would be best.
Sun, 12/23/2007 - 11:15 PM Permalink
Terry

The further benefit of having that outside this folder would be access to those who get free access should Tim set that up prior to the hunt. That could result in more sales.

he feels that because Trent is losing money because we are not setting up an folder for this...

he is wanting us to have a folder set up...

Clue Master

Why don't we move the Streets discussion into the archives and create a discussion for NTFCF in it's place within the hunt folder?
Wed, 12/26/2007 - 8:18 AM Permalink
KITCH

ok just got off the phone with jake.

He said a few things...

One we owe it to Trent. Saying that trent came here and supported the hunt and is the reason that the hunt has grown in numbers of hunters since como..

Jake said that Trent is losing money and not going to make a dime off of this.

Jake said that he is not going to be making any money off of this film (but Jana told me he is the local distubitor of this money)

Jake was very upset when i told him that I believe the "moderators" are in support of not hosting an "for profit" thread in the cooler.

He also wants an honest explaination and I'm sure he is going to approach each of us about it over time.

seriously ...thoughts??

My view...it think its not right...

to me what is the difference of setting up an thread for LilMan and his DJ service.

or Mappy and his book

or Med and his book.

I just don't like it...

but I'm one person in this decision..

even if it is a movie about us...I just don't feel its right...I'm going to buy one...and I am sure that many of the coolers will... I just don't like the idea of it here...

I told him he is more than welcome to post about it......just didn't want to create a full thread topic for it.
Wed, 12/26/2007 - 8:25 AM Permalink
Terry

It is exactly that problem with Mappy and Med and others that have something to sell that would make this uncomfortable.

And there will be those coming to this site from the PP as guests or as those not paying if Tim sets it up that way by the hunt who can get that information from the Welcome Hunters thread outside this one.

With a link to that discussion/thread in the hunt and shoot the breeze threads, that should more than cover our participation and support. We could also have the link and information on the coolercrew.com site.

And as others within the Able Minds community might hear or find out about that video, there would be an opportunity for others to purchase it.

We are not trying to limit sales of the video - I may buy more than one as I can get enough money together to do so - but trying to be fair to everyone including mappy and med.

On the other hand, this is unique so I'd be open to other ideas.

KITCH

jake said he would be willing to cover all costs associated with it...

maybe he makes a $20 donation to ableminds...

he creates a folder outside the cooler...and than we have a link to it?
Wed, 12/26/2007 - 9:26 AM Permalink
Terry

It isn't a matter of cost, it should be free to put it with the Welcome Home Medallion Hunter thread and a direct link from the folders here.

In many ways, doing it outside this folder with no access to those that don't pay, could provide a much larger pool of people who could/would purchase.

I don't want Jake or Trent getting all bent out of shape about not having a thread within our folder, but they must understand that if we open that up for Trent and Jake, we would also have to do for Mappy, Med, the local Avon lady. the tupperware salesperson, the person who does crafts and sells them....etc. etc.

And having that thread within the Welcome Hunter folder, if Tim the sysop provides a free trial time, those coming for a taste from the PP would also have access. Once its inside our folder here, it would mean they would have to pay to have access.
Wed, 12/26/2007 - 9:57 AM Permalink
Terry

Of course, he could set up a seperate folder of his own for $20. I'm sure Tim and Mark would like the money too.

Terry is right in that this is a unique event, and if Jake can give me a good reason why he should be able to do it and not others, then I would possibly be in favor of it. The big thing is that we need a good, solid explanation for our decision, whatever it is. This isn't personal at all. Some could argue that Map Guy's and/or Mr Med Hunter's books are more beneficial to the hunt, so why should we not have threads for their products? Like Terry said, we can have links on the pages. They could be better because they are more likely to be seen, instead of overlooked by someone choosing to "read all". He can talk to the webmasters about getting links/information on all the websites he can think of that deal with the Treasure Hunt. We're willing to compromise with him on this, I hope he can see that.

I don't think this is a big deal at all. I can let him post about it in the Welcome thread.

:: peek ::

sorry i haven't been around for a while. been up to my ass with school, and in november getting laid off and finding a new job. fortunately, i start on the 2nd of january out at siemens making more money, so its a blessing in disguise. downside: new job = no time for daytime hunting. and even less since its out in 'tonka. as you've probably read, bill isn't doing well and we're spending a buncha time out there. trying to support my wife with her difficult time right now and all my other priorities doesn't leave a lot of time for the forum. hopefully things will get better now that i'll have a steady job yet again and i should be able to peek in here more frequently, at least on nights and weekends anyway. hope you all had a great christmas!

and as far as jake goes:

:: slams head on nearest hard surface available since i don't have an office with a desk anymore ::

:: several times ::

:: until all that is left of my head is a bloody stump on my neck ::

and the rest of me agrees with kitch.

I can't post this publicly for another day or two - Vino and one of my co-workers are friends and the co-worker was sick today.

I was offered and have accepted a new job with the state. Same money - but opportunity for advancement and doing work that is worthwhile instead of the hell I've been living in. I think everyone in my current office could carry the last name of Pitt.

I am sooooo excited and happy. 2008 is starting out great!

woot! congrats terry!

my new gig is going great for the first two days so woot again!

incidentally, i got laid off from symantec due to budget cuts. gotta make the december quarter look good for the shareholders, so to do that we're reducing costs permanently by getting rid of 3% of the staff (from our most profitable product no less), and giving them big severance packages so that we take an even bigger "one-time" expense hit in the quarter. evidently corporate finance is very funny that way. i can only assume why me, but i'd imagine it has to do with the fact that we hired a junior engineer for my team, and i was the top guy on the team so i was the biggest saveable expense. while it worked out great for me (i managed a 15% pay raise at the new job), not so much so for the guys left back at symc. largely because the new guy was not so much an install guy as much as a tools guy that i'd specifically chosen for tool development and not install development. so they got rid of a very knowledgable install guy because they have a new, cheaper "install guy", not knowing that the cheaper "install guy" isn't an install guy at all.
