The reason I know about the no alcohol rule is that I've used the city parks for events for some programs I coordinate for work. There is a no alcohol rule in all the parks.

No, you get 2,500 for finding it and 2,500 more for the clue clippings and if you have a registered button then you get 5,000 more.

if he went home for 20 minutes to wait for his wife, isn't that a dirrect breakage of a rule? (must go straight to pioneer press building to redeem prize)

Medallion found in Newell Park

John Davoli didn’t trust his wife to stay calm when he found the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion as they were searching together in St. Paul’s Newell Park Saturday afternoon. So he told her he had enough searching for one day, went home and waited for her there. He considered calling her on her cell phone to tell her to come home quick, but he was concerned she might start screaming in the middle of the park and get mobbed by the 200 other searchers who were still there.

"I knew if I called her she would go hysterical,’’ said Davoli, 40.

"He didn’t tell me. He left without me,’’ said Lori Davoli, 38.

So she spent 20 more fruitless minutes digging in the snow before giving up, going home and finding the medallion in her husband’s hand. It turned out John was right about how she would react.

"I was jumping up and down. I was in shock. Just hysterical,’’ she said.

The St. Paul couple said they are frequent medallion searchers. Lori Davoli said she remembers looking for the medallion the last time it was found in Newell Park 15 years ago. She said she was one week away from giving birth to the first child, but she was out there digging at night with a shovel that had a flashlight taped to the handle.

This year, the couple said they spent four or five hours studying the clues and consulting dictionaries to check alternate meanings of the words om some of the hints. But they said they had only been digging about an hour and a half before Davoli spotted a flash of red in the snow that he was turning over with a hoe. The spot was near the bench swing in the park in the Midway area of St. Paul. Davoli immediately pocketed what he found, a cardboard box for a set of Bicycle playing cards. The medallion was hidden inside.

The family will get $5,000 for the find. They missed out on an additional $5,000 because they failed to get a registered Winter Carnival button.

Actually 3.2 beer is permitted in some of the parks, though no alcohol is permitted in Newell. I suspect most of you would need something stronger that that, anyways. Lament for the medallion!!!!

Also, I propose a mini medallion hunt of our own tonight...a little something to ease our pain...so that we may have the pleasure of witnessing a coolerhead find the darn thing for once.

Hey did any of you know that The clues descriptions are up already? Clue no. 1 To cure Vikings depression try a new obsession By taking part in our hunt through the snow But if you hope it's a profitable profession To a park in St. Paul you must go Don't be a rapscallion and seek the medallion In places of the improper sort You're certain to cause a rebellion If you go where golfers cavort Informs hunters that the medallion is located in a park in St. Paul and that it is not on a golf course. Clue no. 2 Set your own pace and it could make you an ace If your grasp of these clues is astute So get yourself out and into the chase And you just might win all the loot "Ace" refers to the fact that the medallion is hidden inside a pack of Ace brand playing cards. Clue no. 3 A tower or two should come into view As you're making your careful inspection. But this hint will only be of help to you If you look in King Boreas' direction. At least two towers are visible when looking north ("in King Boreas' direction") from Newell Park. One is the tower of the Agriculture-Horticulture Building at the State Fairgrounds. The other is a concrete tower near Midway Stadium used by the St. Paul Fire Department for training. Clue no. 4 Some places to gain relief from the rain Will serve to help you as you're looking Read this well and you just might obtain A clue that will really get you cooking Two picnic shelters and a park building at Newell provide "places to gain relief from the rain." There are also grills for "cooking." But the key clue here is the word "serve," which is something a butler might do. This, of course, is a reference to Newell Park's northern boundary -- Pierce Butler Route. Clue no. 5 Opposites attract and that's a fact Even if your mood's cloudy and foul This simple truth might help you extract The prize being sought by all The opposite of "cloudy and foul" is "fair." This is a double clue that points to Newell Park's location nera the State Fairgrounds and to the fact that it is bordered by Fairview Avenue. Clue no. 6 A well-trained eye is one reason why A good hunter stays on the attack This is a lesson you need to apply If you want to be on the right track "A well-trained eye" and "the right track both refer to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks located just north of the park. Clue no. 7 A pleasant scene and a turning machine Might help you court our treasure It's there somewhere in between If you can make the right measure A "pleasant scene" is a "fair view," as in Fairview Avenue, located on the west side of Newell Park. "A turning machine" refers to Wheeler Street, on the park's east side. "Court" refers not only to the park's basketball and tennis courts but also to the fact that Pierce Butler -- after whom the road on the north side of the park is named -- was a member of the U.S. Supreme Court. Clue no. 8 Find where kids play and you won't go astray Especially if you spot arches nearby This should make it easier to locate your way Amid obstacles that otherwise mystify Besides referring to the playgrounds in Newell Park, this clue provides two other hints. The "arches nearby" is a reference to the shape of the windows on the park building. Finally, the last word of the third line, "way," and the first word of the fourth line, "amid," can easily be reversed to suggest Midway -- the area of St. Paul in which Newell Park is located. Clue no. 9 There's a place in our park for a leisurely arc Find it and you'll be in the treasure's vicinity Look also for colors that catch the eye And remember you're not far from divinity There are three clues here. "Leisurely arc" refers to the movement of the bench swing that serves as one of the main locators for the medallion. "Colors that catch the eye" can be found on the brightly colored children's playgrounds in the park. "Remember that you're not far from divinity" refers to the St. Paul Saints, who

Are there still plans for a bash next Saturday at Newell? I left Newell when everyone else did this afternoon. I was one of the one's who called PP to verify the bad news for the rest of us still out there. It was real weird when the news got to us (everyone still out digging) because all of a sudden things stopped and people got real quite. Then people started picking up their tools, yelling for the kids, and walking toward their vehicles. You just knew it was all over and the feeling of disappoint hint like a rock. IT CAN'T BE OVER YET!!! IT'S TOO SOON!! My hubby was there yesterday morning for many hours and we came back this afternoon. Prior committments kept us away earlier today. Anyway, luck had it's factors for the Davoli's prize winning today. I was very surprised that none of us here in the cooler found it. I was so sure it would be one of us this year. I just knew who ever found it today was not going to receive the full $10,000. I hope Mom PP will keep the prize at $10,000 for now on. Someone please e-mail me and let me know if the bash will be on for next Saturday. Congrats to the Davoli's.

Hi, Golden Boy. I met you last year at Conway and I also called you on your cell phone with the clue. I don't know if you'd remember me. I did have an opportunity to talk to you this year. I wasn't going to stay up and discuss clues at midnight. I hope PP also changes the time back to 11:30. They can keep the clue clippings being needed but change back the on-line clue be posted.

Terry, I was hoping to meet you this year. I found your pictures as well as the others on the "cooler crew" web site. I sure am hoping to see everyone next Saturday. Don't have any committments then. I hope Steve will be there for a group picture. He said something about a picture yesterday but no one was counting on the medallion to be found so soon. It's still hard to realize it's over. I'm happy about them finding it, but my kids are disappointed about not being able to play for many days. My hubby and I find it quality family time and not just at home in front of TV or computer. I feel cheated I guess in a way.

DDY - I think what we need is a pan that can be put on a fire. We got rid of some and took some north I think. Do you have a pan?

Of course I remember Treasure Digger. You were there with your kid(s). I think I was there with mine also. Like you I am EXTREMELY disappointed. I actually wanted the PP to get crafty like they did last year and have us chasing to different park until clue 8 or 9. But this one was NP all the way - Allison W had it pegged. Well hopefully they'll make it harder next year. After all it doesn't make sense for them to have these incentives to buy papers (ie; clue on line at 12:00 vs 11:30 AND save the clippings) if they're going to make it so easy. That's teh only part that still doesn't make sense to me!

Golden Boy, the earliest it's ever been found is with 0 clues. It was found before the hunt began by a couple at highland. They went there for an evening walk. The man wanted to propose to his girlfriend but wanted to propose at their favorite bench which just happened to be the bench the medallion was taped to. That was the year when 2 treasure chests were hidden.

Golden Boy, I believe I was talking with you when my hubby called me on my cell phone and told me to quit flirting and start digging. Had to really laugh at that. Didn't really have a chance to do that this year. Maybe next year will prove different.

Good info TD - but besides that - has there ever been a year where it was this easy to pinpoint the park this early via the clues. Maybe for a big park - yes. But this has got to be the earliest they've given away a SMALL park.

You know, I was pretty sure it was at Newell on the 5th clue but with the next 2 clues I was positive. Even though I was so sure, a part of me started thinking that maybe it was found at a different park. I was going to be shocked it that was the case. On our way home from Newell, we started saying that we should go digging there tomorrow just for the heck of it. Just to get it out of our systems.
