tis one other thing I would like to get out and do this summer but wont have time or money to do!! this moving crap is for the BIRDS!!! I hate this S@#t!!!!
Side arm or over-head throwing uses way different muscles. I hurt after every time I throw those ways too. I always hurt after my first round of the summer too. Which was just last weekend.
My drivers are old and ancient and look like they've been used for salad shooters more than once. The wife wants to go out this weekend as well. Kaposia does look like a great course - I just want to stretch my throwing distance because I haven't been throwing for a long time. Can't really do much of that on a wooded course.
I have developed an aversion to wooded courses because all the ones I've played have been nasty mosquito pits. Cottage Grove is in a swamp and an excellent example of this. This weekend shouldn't matter because thankfully the bug count is waaaaaay down right now.
Who is going to be around for a local match this weekend? Anywhere, anytime.
I'm up for it, which course were you thinking of? Jana and I played Kaposia on Tuesday, and I played Lakewood today. Both are in good shape. Otherwise I hear that North Valley in Inver Grove Heights is nice. It looks like tomorrow will be the best day weatherwise.
I would guess that it might be a bit less crowded than a normal weekend just because so many people go out of town for memorial day. When Jana and I were there on Tuesday there were maybe 3 or 4 groups ahead of us, and right after work on weekdays is the busiest it gets.
Since school is over, I can finally start disc golfing. I am planning on going to the field today and then to a course (probably Acorn, because it is the easiest 18-hole course for me to get to). I will probably play (somewhere) every nice day for the next couple weeks, so send me a PM or call me if you want to meet up and play.
Regman and I played Kaposia today, they have all 24 holes set up for the Majestic tournament this weekend. It was neat for me to be able to play all of the holes across the ravine and around the parking lot since I had never played at Kaposia before last year. We're going to try to make it out at least one more time this week (probably Thursday, possibly Tuesday), everyone is welcome to join us.
Is old hole #14 set up? It's the famous one that goes from one side of the Kaposia valley to the other. The basket is located on the valley side of the fence just to the south of the picnic shelter.
I might have to make an effort to get out there before Thursday just to play that hole alone. I miss that hole.
CM, if you are as nostalgic as I am, you would've loved playing the old holes. Well... maybe. I had mixed feelings about the whole thing. It was fun to play some of the old holes and new versions of some of the other holes (since the back nine at Kaposia used to be my favorite nine-hole stretch), but there is a lot overgrowth now and the park renovations have really changed the composition of that part of the park.
The old 14 (George's Gorge) is not playable. There is a hole in the current Majestic setup that goes from the old 14 tee (right on top of the hill behind the rink) to the old 15 basket (which is to your left if you are facing the 14th basket from the tee), although the area around the old 15th basket is much different. Also, the old 16 and 17 are totally different with the new path, although one hole plays somewhat like the old 16 (the tee is in the same place and you throw all the way up the hill, etc.).
But yeah CM, I also really miss the old 14. It was sort of sad seeing it now, as there is overgrowth around the tee (you cannot even throw toward the old 14 basket with all the overgrowth, which is probably why they are making players throw left now), the path construction has changed the contour of the valley, and the little "clearing" on the top of the hill where the basket stood is now almost completely overgrown.
---
BFG, I totally forgot about the stuff that is going on at Kaposia on Thursday. I don't think the Thursday stuff is too serious, though, and we could probably get on. We could also play Acorn.
---
Has anyone been to Oakwood recently (like, in the last two years)? I haven't been there in a few years, and I have heard things about possible changes to the park. Is the course still up and running?
---
I spent 30min at Como today throwing and I am getting everything back together. I definitely needed that! BFG and I (well, I, at least) had a lot of fun, and the invitation is still out if anyone wants to play in the next few weeks.
Does anyone else here think bringing a can of spray paint to Kaposisa and labeling each tee box would help a lot of people (myself included) not get lost in the woods?
Kaposia was much less difficult to navigate when I started (so I don't have a ton of experience with this), but I can imagine that it would be difficult to learn the course now. Lots of holes have been added in various areas, and many of the newer paths have not been broken in. Despite this, do not think that the spray painting is the right thing to do:
1) There are a members of the community (Tim Scanlon, for example) who put a lot of good/important work into Kaposia, and are ultimately responsible for doing most of those sorts of things. I definitely would not alter the course without their permission, even by adding signs. I know that this is a much more extreme case, but someone cut down a tree at Acorn (last year, I believe) and many people got very mad. I have also seen the authorities get mad at much smaller things (and rightfully so). Over the last few years, these people have added a lot of holes, done a lot of cementing, and have occasionally put up signs. A couple years ago, there were some paper signs taped to the posts next to the tee pads. With all of this in mind, I would not do anything without their permission.
2) Depending on where you do this, it might look really tacky and unprofessional. Sure, we want people to find their way around the course, but we don't want the course to look bad. It is difficult to convince city councils to fund local courses, and they often look at well-established courses to make their decisions. Disc golfers are often associated with vandalism and trashing, so anything that might appear as such should be avoided (around 5 years ago, many courses were close to being shut down because the parks boards felt like their parks were being trashed).
3) Unless you do a lot of spray painting, it will not help. Simply marking the hole number will not help, as people often have the most difficulty actually finding the hole (not just knowing whether a given hole is the correct one). You would likely have to paint directions to baskets on some holes, as well as directions to tees.
4) Doing things like this, even when done correctly, may cause people with worse judgment to do things that are less beneficial to the course.
I have seen lots of courses both evolve and devolve. Quite frankly, I believe that any free-to-play course with no constant oversight is better off without signs. Signs are good targets for vandals, and every attempt to put up signs at Kaposia, since I have been playing, have failed (and I assume ones before that failed too, since there are no signs). The only way to really do the sign thing well is to make permanent, high-quality signs, and these types of things always get vandalized. Think of the old Highland signs, the old North Valley signs, and the old Oakwood signs. I think the best thing to do is to create some sort of online course map, link it to the PDGA course directory entry for Kaposia, and keep it updated. Kaposia used to have its own website, but it was rarely updated, and Kaposia (in particular) tends to change fairly frequently. I do think that signage would help assure that new players don't get frustrated and pushed from the game, but a more professional, community-wide effort would need to be made in order to make any progress.
I should note that there are a couple new signs directing players to tees. I believe these were put up for the Majestic, and I am not sure how long they will be out there.
Thanks for the detailed update Reg. Much appreciated. You totally get what I'm talking about. Sad 14 is so overgrown. I know we tossed it a few times the year after they pulled the basket just to be nostalgic. But it was starting to grow over then as well.
That hole was the whole reason I trudged through those ups and downs of the back 9. Without it, I really don't care.
I might play the new holes anyway just to give it a whirl. and lose a disc on top of it.
"That hole was the whole reason I trudged through those ups and downs of the back 9."
It is funny you say that. Yesterday, while walking up the old, uphill hole right after the stream hole (the old 11th or 12th, depending on the year), I said to BFG something like, "yeah, this is how I used to get all my exercise!"
We definitely need to play again soon, CM. All I can remember about your playing is that you threw the disc a mile (you had a CE Valkrye if I remember correctly). I remember you showing me pictures of where one of your drives landed on the pond hole at NV. I was totally amazed! I usually just play the short tee on that one
not a place to hang my hat just a place to put most if not all of my stuff!!! other wise I am couch surfing for a few!!
and I dont need any more of them!! I get enugh as it is!! lol I got a friend when he gets pissed at you he just gose around the net signing you up for Junk mail!!!
The best part is changing the name or address slightly by one letter or so. Then you'll get about 25 sweepstakes entries from Publisher's Clearing House.
A new 18-hole premier disc golf course will open at Bryant Lake Regional Park, Eden Prairie, on Monday, June 16, and you can golf it for free through June 30!
The new course features mown fairways, awesome views of Bryant Lake, and challenging new features. These new features include fairways through oak woods, rugged terrain and shooting off of bluffs and ledges. The six new holes added to the shorter existing course make the skill level of this par 60 course moderate to high.
Three Rivers Park District would like to give disc golfers the opportunity to try this exciting new course for free! So come on out between June 16 and June 30 and give it a whirl. Beginning July 1 the cost of a daily pass is $3 and a season pass is available for just $30.
Hours of operation are sunrise to sunset. Due to the tender new grass, the course may close occasionally (weather dependent) to ensure that the turf becomes well established. For updated information call the courseÂ’s news line at 763-694-7764.
By the looks of some of the comments on those discin videos you'd think those guys were mathematicians or something. Read some of them. Not sure of the answer myself other than the disc would break into 500 pieces if it hit something in the -30 temps. Got a LED lighted Frisbee one year for Christmas and rushed right outside to play with it. One skip and it was all over. :frown:
That goes back to the 600 yard drive bet that people take when asked if they thought a guy could smack the ball all the way across the lake without it going in. He waited for winter.
Colder Air is less able to hold water vapor making it less dense, thereby increasing the ease of flight and increasing the speed required to attain flight thereby increasing the speed at which "landings" are made, leading to higher impact speeds. With the added brittleness of your "saucers", some grand crashes and destruction is possible. hehe!
I was in Kaposia a couple of weeks back. There were guys playing the course well into the dark. The course had "packed" trails from tee to green. Why haven't you guys been out?
Like your tag Timmers
Look at them shots I could never play with you!! I SUCK!!!
Allways have at it and allways will I like to play just to get drunk like golf!!!
Go figer Me Drink???
I haven't thrown out my shoulder...but sure as hell felt like it...
of course I threw sidearm and really cranked the hell out of it...

Are those "extra" holes overgrown, or did they trim back the greenery so you don't need a machete to play?

The others, not so much

I will be outside no matter what but I'd much rather be discin' again than blowing leaves.
Give me a call if you're in for a quick round. Don't forget we now have another hour of light on top of it.
Check out these awesome drives. The 3rd one kicks ass!
