Hugo Golden Spike:

Here are the first three clues. New clues will be available at The Citizen at 8 AM and 5 PM daily starting tomorrow, June 5th. The hunt ends at Noon on Sunday.

Clue #1

The snow is past, the sky is clear;

It's Hugo's favorite time of year.

School takes a bow, the kids all know

Good Neighbor Days is in high gear!

(The Ferris wheel will soon appear.)

Clue #2

In this treasure marathon,

One thing you may depend upon.

Spike on public land is hidden.

No need to trepass. It's forbidden.

(We're not kiddin'.)

Clue #3

Although you're an enterprising breed,

Treasure hunters, please take heed!

Don't "miss the boat" - or this footnote:

Leave the shovel at home as your good deed.

Read Spike's rules. They're easy to read.

Don't make us plead.

    Clue #5.

    City folks pine for the open spaces

    Tired of their daily wild-goose chases;

    An aerial view is your first clue

    That dreams of treasure do come true.

    Clue #6.

    These lands have borders you may not pass;

    Respect the double-stranded fence!

    Adjoined by a stretch of canary grass,

    It points to the double silo, hence.

    I spent a little time in Hugo over lunch today. I feel pretty good about Oneka Lake Park. It's a huge open area with lots of grassy and swampy areas to search. If you head out there, please wear boots and take a garbage bag along with you. It's very wet and alot of misc trash lying around. I'm not sure if I'll have any time to look again.

    I was thinking that clue kind of leads me to that Air Field along side 61 there in Hugo!?!?! but I don't know of a park in that part of Hugo?? anyone?? I dont know Hugo all that well!! so I couldn't say!!
    Fri, 06/06/2008 - 1:13 PM Permalink
    OT

    Oneka Park is the only place I do know of in Hugo. We cut our Christmas tree at the tree farm at the end of Greene Road and adjacent to the south end of the lake. Clue 5 says, "City folk pine for open spaces". Maybe they mean the city folk who drive out there for their pine tree? And look at the border of trees along the tree farm property on an aerial map. "These lands have borders you may not pass". Definitely a border.

    That's all I know. You might be on to something, MrMedHunter.

    Clues are given out each week that lead to the location of a special horseshoe hidden somewhere on public property. Whoever finds the horseshoe and has a 2008 Dan Patch Days button wins $100. The lucky winner also gets to keep the commemorative horseshoe and will be invited to ride, with their family, in the Dan Patch Days carriage in the parade on Sunday, June 22.

    2008 Dan Patch Days buttons are available at Savage Liquor Stores, Razor's Edge, the Library and the American Legion.

    Rules for the horseshoe hunt have changed this year,

    so please read carefully:

    Each Saturday, clues for the horseshoe hunt will be available here by 9 a.m. on this web site (www.danpatch.com). This is the ONLY place the clues will be available online. Clues will also be published in the Saturday print edition of the Savage Pacer newspaper. In addition, clues will also be posted at the Savage Library at approximately 10 a.m. Saturday mornings.

    To maintain the interest and integrity of the horseshoe hunt, the following members, spouses and minor children are NOT eligible to participate in the hunt: Dan Patch Historical Society board members, Dan Patch Days Inc. committee members and Savage Pacer newspaper employees.

    Also, there will not be any back-to-back winners.

    Anyone who thinks they've found the horseshoe should bring the horseshoe into Jens at the Razor's Edge, 12385 Ottawa Avenue, in downtown Savage. For more information on Dan Patch Days visit our website at

    www.danpatchdays.org.
