their was a healing touch woman in the surgery with him and I've given him a foot rub and rubbed and touched anywhere he needs it. - minds out of gutter boys.

I've got a call in to the hospital now. However, the nurses say that the orders say thats what the doctor is ordering. Soooo, we are trying to convince these nurses to put requests in for stronger stuff but they just don't. I'm not there during the day right now because of work so it's harder on my end.

nick, i believe that certain members of the medical community at st. joe's could be in use of the old "baseball bat" therapy. might improve their attitudes a little bit towards medication.

seriously though, if the nursing staff isn't putting requests through to the doctors, its time for you/brad/his mom to call the doctors directly. its what they get paid for. make enough noise and fill enough voice mail boxes they'll give you what you want just to get you off their backs.

calls to medical directors during business hours help as well.

So.... does Cluey's ticker actually "tick" now? Does the valve make noise?

I knew a kid in college that had a similar valve replaced years ago. Your could hear him ticking all the time in the quiet study hall.

yeah.... it kinda sounds like a clock, if you listen real close, and there isnt too much other noise going on.

I can hear him pretty clear- sounds like pop rocks.

sorry guys, I'm just frustrated with a few things right now- some personal besides this crap. thanks for allowing me to vent some. on top of that last nights nightmares didn't help.

The doctor stopped in and showed Brad the valve - I heard it was pretty cool. He went to therapy and the healing touch woman stopped in to see him and a couple family members dropped by .....so he has had a busy morning already. sigh. He has taken Tylenol for headaches too.

I wanted to go up and see him but sounds like he just needs rest and pain meds right now, so I think I'll wait to see him until a later date.

I was so happy to see that Holistic healing was being taught (at least a little bit) to the nurses going through school now. If I remember correctly, mrs.zephy had a full semester of it.

I've seen him in great spirits and almost seemed like a very minor pains...amazing to say the least!!!

I was expecting so much worse..

maybe he hides it so well...when trying to impress me

hehe he said he let his pecks down after you left.

he is doing much better than the day before. They thought his loopiness was an effect from the different medicines and antibiotics mixed that he was being given. I am not as worried today as I was yesterday. Like Kitch said, he is in great spirits and going forward with a positive attitude that this has changed his life for the better. We went for a walk down the hall, Whitney mocked/copied his walk because it was like an old man walking down the hall with a hunched back, one hand on back, one hand on knee for balance-it was quite cute to watch them both stumble down the hall together. He gets out of energy quickly. He will be ready to run on clue 12 in a heart beat! and probably outrun us with that healthy heart now. He is gonna outlive all of us - he has 119 years, 360 days ahead of him

I rubbed his back and we watched the Olympics and then tucked him in bed with lots of pillows. The doctors placed a picline in him yesterday so he can be administered antibiotics at home over the next 28 days. I feel the relief that he is gonna be okay. Our lives were gonna change this month for the good or the bad no matter what... we are all so very lucky that everything is gonna be alright now. I'll chalk it up to the luck of the Irish...and the determination that Brad has had to get well. So much yet to do honey.

All you can do is set goals and accomplish them:

One-arm pushups by Labor Day, perhaps?

O.K., set REASONABLE goals and accomplish them...

I want a new drug

One that wont make me sick

One that wont make me crash my car

Or make me feel three feet thick

I want a new drug

One that wont hurt my head

One that wont make my mouth too dry

Or make my eyes too red

One that wont make me nervous

Wondering what to do

One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you

When Im alone with you

I want a new drug

One that wont spill

One that dont cost too much

Or come in a pill

I want a new drug

One that wont go away

One that wont keep me up all night

One that wont make me sleep all day

One that wont make me nervous

Wondering what to do

One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you

When Im alone with you

Im alone with you baby

I want a new drug

One that does what it should

One that wont make me feel too bad

One that wont make me feel too good

I want a new drug

One with no doubt

One that wont make me talk too much

Or make my face break out

One that wont make me nervous

Wondering what to do

One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you

When Im alone with you

I think they've been saying all along that the meds are NOT keeping the pain under control, especially since he left intensive care.

Sounded like he had a better day yesterday, which I took to mean he was toughing out the pain but could note some improvement.

Hope the Vicodin helps!!!

as far as I know he has had some form of pain somewhere at all times (except yesterday morning when he laid down in bed in a weird scrunchy position for an hour or so). He was on his loopy side the day you went. his voice was tired and scratchy and low volume when I saw him after you did. He gets weak easily. If it's not his incision, it's his back, his side, his neck. They are having a spine specialist see him, I think after he is discharged. They didn't let him go outside earlier today, some liability claim excuse - like if he catches pneumonia he could blame them or something. :eyeroll:

went up and saw cluey tonight. looking good, albeit 50 lbs less of him. he walked us out, all the way back to the elevator lobby. one of the phlebotomists asked us if we were trying to help him escape

turns out what j didn't say when she told about the vicodin he's getting is that the way he got it was by disregarding what the nursing staff told him to do. he told them he'd start behaving when they started doing what he asked and got a doctor to get him some damn pain meds. about 30 seconds later he had his meds.

A guy fell asleep on the beach for several hours and got horrible

sunburn, specifically to his upper legs.

He went to the hospital, and was promptly admitted after being diagnosed

with second-degree burns.

With his skin already starting to blister, and the severe pain he was in,

the doctor prescribed continuous intravenous feeding with saline,

electrolytes, a sedative, and a Viagra pill every four hours.

The nurse, who was rather astounded, asked, "What good will Viagra do for

him, doctor?"

The doctor replied, "It won't do anything for his condition, but it'll

keep the sheets off his legs."

Glad to read that he's doing better and finally got the pain meds he should have. Hope that helps.

I hope they aren't sending him home too soon - but often things seem better when you can sleep in your own bed.

he has to get a last dose of 'in hospital' antibiotics
(he will be taking at home as well) and went over discharge papers and another therapy class and shower - the basics before leaving. I think he is really looking forward to getting home.

hopefully a quiet night.

A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph's Hospital. She timidly

Asked,

'Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is

Doing?'

The operator said, 'I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and

Room number?'

The grandmother in her weak tremulous voice said, 'Norma Findlay, Room

302.'

The operator replied, 'Let me place you on hold while I check with her

Nurse.'

After a few minutes the operator returned to the phone and said,

"Good news her nurse has told me that Norma is doing very well. Her

Blood pressure

Is fine. Her blood work just came back as normal and her physician, Dr.

Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged Tuesday.'

The grandmother said, 'Thank you. That's wonderful! I was so

Worried! God bless you for the good news.'

The operator replied, 'You're more than welcome, Is Norma your

Daughter?'

The Grandmother said, 'No, I'm Norma Findlay in 302. No one

Tells me s***

just talked with him 1/2 hr ago, he sounds weak, slow and groggy. I told him to go sit outside for a bit. The nurse is coming at 1 to show him how to give himself his own antibiotic shot through the PIC line. One of his relatives stayed with him and Ali last night and took care of dinner last night and breakfast and stuff. very nice. I am going over after work.

He came home to Welcome Home signs around the house.

I don't know if the site is updated through yesterday but most of what has happened is at www.TeGantvoort.com ...I think this time you just click on the link above the picture of Brad and his brothers family. You'll get a first peek at his beard

Wow! I've been without a computer for over a month and come back to this. I'm kind of glad I missed the scary parts though.

CM, take care of yourself. The worst is over since you've had the surgery.

Our little Teddy has bicuspid aortic valve disease. His was caught the day he was born but he won't be having his surgery until he reaches puberty. He's eight now and is quite the active little boy even with this disease. I'm so not looking forward to when the time comes for his surgery though. You can actually hear his valve "click" if you put your ear to his chest. He's exchanging letters with Sam Maresch, the Gopher football recruit from Champlain who was diagnosed this summer.

You'll be better than ever now that they've caught it. Wishing you all the best.

little update. cm is doing pretty good...back still hurts. Vicodin isn't helping now. He has spent the weekend hanging out on the couch, catching up on movies and dvr. He sat out on the deck to catch some rays. The incision is healing well already. He has to take the antibotic through the PIC line once a day at noonish for half an hour and take lots of pills like an old person. Supposedly that won't last for long though. Basically the first 30 days are critical and he has to follow a regiment of pills, antibotics, and physical therapy 3 times a week over at Woodwinds. Today appointments are being made to go the see regular physician for an updated x-ray of the chest and I think the cardiologist for a couple weeks from now and I thought the back doc./spine and setting up physical therapy....but so many appointments -it gets confusing. Besides getting his work situated.

On a good note, yesterday we watched that comedy spoof - something about Super people? it was so funny we almost had to turn it off because he was laughing so much he was hurting his chest.

He wants to be apart of the AW 24 hr hunt and is already trying to figure out how to participate in the wc hunt. thinking about taping his chest and noodling lots. dontcha know heart surgery makes you smarter?
