It's A Sad Day Today :-(

Surgery went well. Penny wes there all day and last night too. They removed a large mass from his colon and found a small spot outside of the colon also. They said it did NOT spread to his liver and that his liver looks good. He'll have to do Chemotharapy.

Penny says the worst is behind us and we'll take it day by day. She thanks everyone for the well wishes and thoughts.

Her dad is pretty much still out of it and is expected to sleep most of the day and night. He has woke up to ask for water and hit the pain button a few times, but is still pretty groggy.

Penny is home now and will go back after 11 am. The hospital is strict about no visitors before 11 am so she'll go in early and work a half day.

They want him up and moving around as soon as possible.

On another note, my co-workers daughter has cancer and was in the hospital yesterday. Today he called in and said he won't be in because of her. Not sure whats happening, but I'm sure its not good. Hopefully he'll be in tomorrow?

I hate when hospitals try to tell you when you can/cant visit people...

Ive been in enough hospitals the past 2 years, for friends/family, to know that they dont stop you, if you show up....

It seems like the only gatekeepers at Hospitals are at the front door. You can get in from 100 other places - including the roof helipad if you're resourceful. I've only gotten kicked out once after "Lights Out" by the nurses.

I like the idea of staying late for a visit - then Habib and his buddy running the parking garage leave early and leave the gate open. Free Parking!

One place you cannot stay late is Nursing Homes - those ladies are about as close to prison guards as I ever hope to be. Their biggest fear is Grandpa will wander out and end up walking downtown for a drink with no clothes on. And they can lock you IN, too.

and even then, you don't stop. don't ask questions just look like you know where you're going. when they ask where you're going say who, say where and they let you in.

And they can lock you IN, too.

you mean they can try. there's always a window that's breakable

My aunt once was sent to a rehab place to get stronger after surgery. This was probably two years ago, when my aunt was "only" 94 years old.

She was discharged from the hospital on Friday. Got to the rehab place and people were stupid enough to admit they didn't know she was coming, there was no one around to do her admission, and rehab would not start until Monday, on which day she was due to be discharged, as Medicare had only approved a three-day stay.

They put her in a room with a woman who would block my aunt's path, and would put her wheelchair where it blocked the bathroom door and yell if anyone tried to move it.

My aunt called us about 5:30 in the morning and told us the whole story. We went down there, had no trouble getting in and up to her room. The nurse was sure startled to see us when she walked in the room though.

The nurse admitted that they could have chosen a better roommate for my aunt, as this woman . She also told us that my aunt had been up and walking on her own quite a bit. We wondered why the heck someone had decided to send her there when she would have been so much more comfortable at home and someone from family could have stayed with her at home, which they knew...

Anyway, we asked if we could take her out on pass with the intention of getting the doctor to discharge her by phone later in the morning. They checked her orders, and said yes. We signed her out, took her home, made her a good breakfast and settled in for the day.

Soon, the rehab place called - they said we'd taken her out "against medical advice". Apparently they'd failed to follow a number of procedures in the sign out, most important of which was that the nurse failed to tell anyone else on the staff about it, and they thought my aunt had gone missing! They were looking all over the building and neighborhood for her.

Yep, there are lots of ways to get into those places after hours! LOL.

sooo glad to hear the surgery went well. We were thinking of him and Penny last night. Interesting about visitors, however, we are talking about the VA here.

I think everyone needs an all around big hug and we should all meet up for 1 hour this weekend for 1 drink.

you guys are funny. I know cm wants to have a bonfire but I know he isn't up to entertaining yet so I don't think that will happen this weekend.

I like the idea of meeting up at the fair but I feel overwhelmed lately and think just getting together at OBBS for a drink would be good.

Well guess it's my turn for sad news.

My mom is in the hospital. Apparently she got some bad news at work, which added stress to an already existing problem with her heart. So my dad brought her into the emergency room and they kept her there till about 11:30 last night. I don't know much about medical terms, I go into a hospital and they start saying stuff that quickly goes over my head. The just I got of it was she was having irregular heart beats, high blood pressure, nausea, and she looked really pale for a while. They decided to keep her overnight to monitor things and wanted to give her a stress test today. Last I heard from my dad is they think there's some blockage in her heart so they transfered her to St. Joes in St. Paul and are looking at doing an angiogram (I'm sure I didn't spell that right).

Anywho, I know she's in good hands and will be ok. Still, I'm just used to my dad having medical conditions, not my mom.

mmmm goodness, I never got if those stress tests ever work. I had to take one once and I've never heard of anyone having a bad outcome from having it done. Maybe, she is in one of the rooms cm was in. 279 and 282. Wonder how her work feels now by giving such bad news to an employee. People just don't realize that they can be affecting someone so deeply with their words and actions.

I do suggest a family member staying with her overnights, that made a huge difference when cm was there. Patients just don't get everything they need from the nurses. They need help from family too. keep us posted KC. hugs and prayers.

Joel - I will keep her and the rest of your family in my prayers. Those are scary times and when the talk quickly goes over your head, that doesn't help. Next time ask them to explain. They will.

St. Joe's is a good place. I believe everyone in our family has been there at sometime or another. The latest was my sister for a quick in and out surgery to remove a benign polyp from her vocal chords earlier this month.

Sorry to hear about your mom Joel. Hope she gets better quickly and your father too.

And yes, you did spell it corectly, I think.

An angioplasty is when they go through the veins with a little camera thingamajig and when they find a blockage, they inflate this balloon like thing to move the plaque so it doesn't block the vein any longer and if that is successful, they put a stint in to hold the vein open and the plague out of the way.

We saw a video about that once when Inks had an angiogram that turned out negative for any blockage. If there had been blockage, they would have proceeded with the angioplasty.

All that because he failed a stress test. Turned out they figured something was goofy with the stress test as his arteriries were clear. That must have been 15 years ago by now.

Wheew, first time I've gotten to a computer in a bit.

Updates on my mom, she's still at St. Joe's downtown, in the Cardiac Intensive care ward. They didn't find any significant blockages when they did that angioplasty on Friday, however they haven't released her yet due to her heart beating too slow. I'll be back visiting this afternoon to see if theres any change. They have her on some medications now, hopfully they can correct the issue without any bad side effects. So far there's been no mention of extra surgery or ideas on pacemakers or anything like that.

I'll post again when I get a chance.

Pennys dad is home.

Found out the "other spot" they found was in one of his lymph nodes. He said they took out 18 nodes even though it was only found in one. I didn't know we even had that many.

Evidently there are about 500-700 lymph nodes spread throughout the body.

The little I know about lymph nodes and cancer, the fact that it was found in one is better than two.

When my Mom had breast cancer some years ago, they found cancer in one node. She did about half the chemo regimen and chose not to do anymore. She is still surviving without any recurrence of cancer and that's been 30 years ago now.
