Actually that picture is of the clock in an acryllic case. They have some other colors, but I sort of liked the brown. It reminds me of translucent wood.

The attorney is someone she went to school with so I'm sure that's part of the reason for the Sunday meeting.

And he knows she's only here until Monday afternoon.

Nick, have you tried school bus driving? They are always hiring.

The state of MN tends to hire maintenance guys fairly regularly. Check the state job board. It changes daily.

enjoy: getting some extra return vents cut into our ductwork in the basement. that should balance out some of the air flow around the house..... and the temperature.

Let me know how this helps and also let me know what it does for your heating bill. We have a split level and our downstairs is at least 10-15 degree's colder than upstairs even though each room has a duct. To cut back on the electric bill I've done away with the space heater in the bedroom and put in an electric blanket (makes me too hot even on low though :frown: )

well, overnight the basement came to within a few degrees of the upstairs after perpetually being about 10 degrees colder than the rest of the house.

we just got a new furnace last spring, so its hard to compare heating bills, but given that i've seen the furnace run for only a few minutes while effectively only working with the upstairs when it was sized for the whole house, i would imagine it will do wonders. looking forward to seeing what it does with the a/c in the summer since the basement is naturally cooler than the upstairs.

You need more air flow for cooling than heating.

no argument there. and when the air is flowing through a space that is naturally cooler than the rest of the house anyway, that can't hurt

however, when there is no airflow, as there was in our basement, any air flow helps, as evidenced by the 10 degree warmup overnight

With your household 'zoo' - how often are you going to replace air filters?

I usually buy the high end 3M ones - they're supposed to go three months, and since I usually forget until about month five it's a good thing it's not a $1.50 filter in there.

FYI - If you want to get a fan to circulate air through the WHOLE house, like on a cool summer night - don't even bother with those plastic box or window fans at Wal Mart or Target - get the smaller steel cage fan that's window size - like 20 to 22" - those fans move more air on "Low" than the old box fans do on high speed. You may have to rig up a shelf to keep it in the windowsil, but we can 'flush' all the stuffy air out of the house in about ten minutes flat. They are noisy fans, but on 'low' they are not too bad compared to running a box fan in every room in the house.

I warmed my basement up doing the same thing. But I put a damper on the return so I can shut off the lower returns in the summer.

The only heat I have in my basement is the heat radiating off of the furnace itself.

in the past we actually closed the supply vents in the basement in the summer. depending on what these new returns do for the temperature we may or may not keep that trend up.

easy. we kick the kids out.

oh you mean the four-legged kind

we've got the $26 honeywell ones in ours. supposed to be good for 6 months. should probably be replaced every 3.

When you close off the basement vents in the summer - do you have humidity / mildew problems if there isn't enough air moving around?

My parents don't have basement venting - except the main air intake in the hallway. The basement ceiling is too low to put in venting. They have to keep the bedroom doors open and a jumbo console dehumidifier running constantly to keep mildew from happening.

another option is to leave them all open and run the blower all the time (if it's not too noisy). That way the cooler air in the basement get spread to the upstairs too. Less compressor run times, but more fan run time.

at the fireplace end of the basement, yes. but that's also the part of the house where we have huge drainage issues (to be mitigated this spring) because of the large chunk of concrete that is the dog's poop pad.

now that we have actual circulation downstairs that's exactly what we'll do. the new furnace has the blower running constantly anyway, albeit on a very lo speed when cooling or heating isn't called for.

If you ever have a new house built, have floor heat put in. We can almost heat the entire house with our system, if I set the thermostat to about 78. This winter we have been keeping it at 72. Floor is always toasty warm. You know it's comfy when the floor down there is the cat's favorite hangout in the winter.

What great ideas! If I end up staying here and need to replace the great room carpet, I am going to re-do the subfloor and put in in-floor heating. The idea of a heated driveway sounds awesome - I suppose if one could get a good geothermal system going for their heating needs, that might be something do-able?

My neighbors asked me if their early morning driveway-scraping bothers me - they explained that they like to get out and get every bit of snow cleared from their driveway before anyone might possible drive on it - their daughter brings her kids over for before-school care - and they were afraid the scraping sounds would wake me up. I don't even hear the plow on MY driveway, much less shovels across the street and down the block. And then there is my driveway, which has so much snow on it now, I don't know where the plow is going to put it the rest of the winter! But in a couple of months, both our driveways will be bare. LOL.

For those who haven't seen these yet, here is our current snow situation after almost 180" this season: http://s543.photobucket.com/albums/gg470/FindHawkeye/2009%2002%2004%20Snow%20Photos/ - click on "slideshow".

I agree. In floor heat is the best. But then you still need seperate ducts for AC, but they can be designed differently to cool from the top down (registers in ceilings).

When we lived in FL, heating the house sucked........very expensive. All the distribution ducts are near the ceiling.....great for A/C, but not for heating.

The plumber that installed mine was telling be about a house he was installing floor heat on all 3 levels. Said he had put in over 10,000 feet of PEX piping.........2 miles!
