Does anyone know if there are still handball courts at Phalen? The 2004 hunt had references to them. Also was the year of the green doughnut. Como just smells like a red herring to me.
Boreas: The Greek god of the North Wind who lived in Thrace. He is depicted as being winged, extremely strong, bearded and normally clad in a short pleated tunic. He is the son of Eos and Astraeus, and the brother of Zephyrus, Eurus and Notus.
Boreas has two sons, two daughters and twelve mares which can race over the ground without destroying the grain. When the Persian navy of Xerxes threatened the city of Athens, the Athenians begged his assistance. The Great Wind of the Wintery North blew his anger at the Persians and 400 Persian ships sank immediately. Among other violent acts he abducted Oreithyia, the daughter of the king of Athens, when she was playing on the banks of the Ilissus. In Latin, he is called Aquilo.
It's a well known bit of show business fact that Perry's first ambition was to be the best barber in Canonsburg. At 14, he was apprenticed to Steve Fragapane who taught him the trade of the shears, and Perry soon opened his own shop as an after-school money maker. With two assistants and a guitar he turned it into a profitable enterprise which he took over on a full-time basis after high school graduation. The miners would come out of the pits on Saturday night, black with coal dust, eager for everything from a shave to a manicure and Perry built his little shop into a $125 a week net profit. It was a small town store where he knew all his customers by name, where it wasn't strange for a barber to sing while clipping hair or stop to strum a guitar because he was in the mood. Life was good, his business was good, he was the local talent in the community, and in 1933 Perry went to Cleveland on a well-earned vacation.
been awhile since I have "dug" into Como. Trolley Zone (Treasure Hunters Guide) has a batch of homes between Churchill St. and W Como Blvd. found in this zone 1990 by huge cottonwood tree. Trolley zone area found also 1956 and that ill-fated Horton Hears a Who of 2003 (god the best hunt, my son and I in the caravan from Harriet to the mosh pit).Don't see anything ice-like.
Speaking of Shamrock, have you ever been to the area that is just a little further north with the dog park, was there this fall and that would make for a great hunt. Lots of space in there.
I don't know - I love the history aspect of this clue. But I can't help think this is a red herring. Like maybe the noodle for this clue is correct but the damn puck has a picture of Charlie Pitt taped to it.
Welcome back everyone, please stay warm and safe. I too think clue 3 is a red herring. But I do have some facts about Como, my mom was a contributor to The Streets book. Henry McKenty officially renamed Sandy Lake to Como Lake in 1856. Dr. Henry Hoyt placed Charles Pitts' bones in Como Lake to bleach, but never recovered the skeleton from the lake. Charles Reed's head was found near the lake by Mr. Pepin's daughter. He was a carpenter (handyman). Didn't the PP in the 2003 hunt say Ann Bilansky's boyfriend was a carpenter? Gottfried's Pit is one of 22 storm sewers and wetland detention ponds that feed Como Lake. McMurray Field was once a gravel pit. I'm hoping this clue refers to a package of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing sandpaper that the puck could be in.
Just a heads up to some of the newbies here since some of you may post on more than one discussion board.
We pay to have privacy here, so common courtesy for this board is that if you have your own original noodle you can share where ever you like but don't take other's noodles here and spread them to masses on the other boards. (that's a real good way to get everyone to clam up here)
We like to keep it "in the family" so to speak
Contrarian reporting in. Como clue three for anyone with google?
That said, it sure is a crystal clear clue. Which are unusual on three, no?
I'm in the coNO camp right now, and if it is not( and the clue means anything at all... Refer 2013 holiday pair) then I hand it to the writer for an outstanding zag when we thought we got zigged!
Save me a little space by the frog... I have to pee, and I'm shy.
I was watching a Lost Twin Cities tonight and noticed that when the streetcar system was dismantled in the 70's, those that weren't sold were burned in the pits and salvaged for scrap.
