I'm liking the areas by golf courses and highland and Phalen/Keller seem to fit. One thing that is bugging me though is the fact that clue 1 (or any of the clues) does NOT use the word "Park" to describe its location. Just "public land". In reading many previous year's clues and explanations, many (not all) state the word "park" if it is actually in a park. Sometimes it seems a bit unclear; for example, with Lilydale, it did not say park but was found there. Perhaps the actual spot was not technically the park as it was near the river. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm wondering if that may be a key to this.
as much as i liked the phalen keller area earlier, this clue pulls me back to my prediction of highland. the police department still has a presence there (well secured), "wedged" in quotes apart from the puck being wedged in something, screams a wedge club from golf. rags to riches -- a nod to ragsdale, but the highland area is one of the "richer" areas of the city. arch - the walking path bridge over montreal ave. the scottish hints in clue 4, heights, watery view = the water towers.
I'll be thrilled if it's at Snail Lake. Years ago one of the clues led me there and I dug a bit. Every year it's a joke with my husband...it will be at Snail Lake this year. Living in Fridley also makes it convenient!
The Twins had a hunt for a Golden Ticket in 2008 and they hid it in Snail Lake. I read the clues I could find from that hunt but not much there.
Very good! Thank you ...Vadnais Heights was my second knee jerk reaction after Highland but I have never been to that [Snail Lake] park, even tho I grew up in Little Canada. Must explore.
I don't see anyone going for the obvious Burns to Afton or at least not mentioning it. [heights to view watery sights, bluffs, bridge arches, trail below etc.] I was thinking that "do right" is a right turn, but Dudley Do Right is perfect ...so far.
good call with grass lake -- I don't want it to be there, but it seems to keep calling... When I saw the clue last night my heart sunk... it's like 40 minutes or so from home...
I've been working the Vadnais/Snail Lake angle also the last couple days... although it was a stretch.
The first half of clue 2 is alluding to the "Of Mice and Men" famous quote. The second half of that quote is "often goes awry" which anagrams to "Now age forty". I started looking into newer suburbs and Vadnais Heights was incorporated as a city 40 years ago.
Going off of Rob's level noodle - edge is wedged in the word - Edgerton.
There are sledding hills in the park, playground equip (a place to play), Grass lake.
When I did a drive by last night I noticed Dudley Ave (Do right).
I still think odds are Keller/Phalen - but my brain always locks on dark horses.
Other things to note in the area if it comes up in future clues:
Huge radio tower - one in the park and two further to the west.
Beach area
Rice st
This park has always baffled me - Is it 2 separate parks or 1 regional park? It depends where you look. On the county site - it's listed as Vadnais/Sucker Lake and Vadnais/Snail Lake. But Vadnais and Sucker Lakes are on the VH side and the Snail/Grass lakes are on the Shoreview side. Also every map is different on what it considers park land. Some maps show hardly any green- others show a vast (and spread out) park land.
Oh! I know the towers you are talking about! My husband grew up in that area and he told me that when his family used to take road trips, when he saw those 3 towers he knew he was close to being home
Just a cute little side story! Thank you for sharing your noodle, because I think you also raise a very valid point in terms of how the clues can be suggested to that park. I saw the sledding hill online today and thought this could very well be it. New place, its close to "out of the box".
I just don't like that it would be a 40 min drive easily from my home. dangit.
When I saw grass lake on the map today and the way the play area is nestled near that, it stopped the heart for a second.
I want Phalen, but might be begrudgingly moving towards Snail lake.
Mackubin is also a Scottish name. A number of other street name ethnicities around, but can't get more on point than Brigadoon and Heather [Heather on the Hill] coming off Victoria [no defeat] ...but looking for a confirmation of "snail" ...not yet
The French Canadian families Bibeau, Vadnais, Garceau, and Morrisette first settled the area now known as Vadnais Heights in the 1840s. It became part of White Bear Township in 1858, when Minnesota became a state.
Vadnais Lake, an important scenic and natural area that has remained undeveloped, was named after Jean Vadnais. Among the first settlers, Vadnais and his family made a home for themselves on the southeast side of the lake.
Actually it is more tied to Saint Paul than one might suspect. Little Canada was founded by Benjamin Gervais who was the first land owner in Saint Paul...
heights and watery sights- water tower
Keep of the grass??
The laddie and lass first made me think of Highland, but unless the water towers are watery sites, there isn't natural water sites there.
I'm off and running for the day.
Good luck to anyone out hunting today.
Highland has the circus juventas, aquatic center, booya shed, and playground near
the "wedge" of woods along W 7th & Montreal.
From the wedge, there is a view of 35E bridge arches and bluffs across the river.
I'll stick with Phalen, at least until tonight's clue.
joe!
Dudley (Ave) Do right
Laddie & Lass -- Highland Drive
heights, and watery sights -- Vadnais Heights & Shoreview

I think that is the best way to put it

Some of the park ( since it seems its all over the place) is inside the box and "out" The out being where the play area is.

Looking at a map of Snail Lake, the first things that jumped out at me were these streets nearby:
Highland, Heather, and Brigadoon!
"Stay off the grass" might mean don't go to Grass Lake Park, or maybe just stay off the lake itself.
Oh, I would like it if it was up there!

Any sledding hills?
Wedge?

it says "BENJAMIN GERVAIS The first Settler of ST. PAUL"
...He sold his land in Saint Paul to Edward Phalen in or before 1844 and moved to Little Canada
