Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.
'mom'
Well, I hate to post and run, but it has gotten later than I wanted sooner than I wanted.
Tomorrow is looking pretty busy, but hopefully I can make it here to at least slog by the end of the day. And I'll probably check in in the a.m.
Allison, I have been on to that for some time as well I thought he was behind all the hi-jinx
LL- multiple personalities that person is not, a person that gets their kicks off of being rude to others they are, also- the fact that they needed to post under various pseudonyms says a lot about their personality. But I won't bore you with their psychology.
llady, i don't hold any copyrights on the stuff. it's just stuff that's been emailed to me. send away. or email me and i'll email it back to you. the contact information is under the contact me page. and thanks about the car. is it any wonder i was itching to drive it last week?
When that co-worker, friend, whomever asks about the persistant anagram solver, internet searching for history, map and guide books, bags under your eyes, ... this is the response:
"You can't handle the truth. People, we live in a city that has parks, and those parks have to be hunted by men and women with shovels. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nonbelievers? We have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep when it’s zero degrees and you curse the blizzard. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what we know: that the clues, while sometimes ludicrous, points to the 10k. And our existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, will find the puck. You don't want the truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want us in the parks, you need us in the parks. We use words like crew, noodle, hash. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent searching for the Medallion. You use them as a punch line. We have neither the time nor the inclination to explain ourselves to people who sleep under their blankets, whilst we analyze, post, and dig, and then questions the park in which we hunt . I would rather you just said "cool" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a shovel and a guide and dig. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to. "
I wouldn't deny that Rice is a smaller park, but the key point was that the treasure has never been hidden in Rice Park, whereas it has been in Irvine. The real contest then was between Irvine and Mears as both of them have hosted the Medallion once. And I think we concluded, at least "officially" that they were the same size.
From looking at the clues and the rhyme scheme, I'd say it's quite possible we've had the same clue writer since 1994. Since then the treasure has been at:
Highland
Battle Creek
Harriet Island
Como
Cherokee
Conway
Newell
Como
I still suspect the cluewriter is from the Como Park area and has a preference for the west side over the east side. Since they've been cluewriter they've gone to the east side twice, (roughly) downtown twice, and the northwest three times. It's been southwest only once and that was their first year. I think they're going to feel the lure of going back to that part of the city. But I don't think they're going to go back to Highland. I think they're going to try a park they themselves have not done before this time. It's hard to come up with fresh ideas for clues for the same park you've already done. With Como, it's big enough that thye could just do a completely different part of the park. So what else is down there? Hidden Falls. It was there in 93, but I think that was a different cluewriter. And there are a lot of obscure places one could hide the medallion if it turned out there wasn't going to be a lot of snow. And I can see it being a hard place to search which might result in a longer hunt. And now that I see it's only been there twice before, I'd say that's my official pre-hunt guess.
Yeah Allison, I've been trying to analyze the clues, and I've been going through the clues starting with 1990. And it seems like 1994 there was a new clue writer.
I've already done through all the clues back to 1990 and tried to classify them. I've got labels like "landmark within park, landmark outside/adjacent park, medallion container, St Paul boundary reference". I would just need to rework my classifications possibly a bit. I can throw out the 1990-1993 hunts though afterwards.
Another thing I noticed is we can finally put the golf course debate to rest. They mentioned golf course in each of the last three years, two years it was in a park without a course and one year it was in a park that did have one. So clearly the mention of avoiding golf courses is meant to niether suggest nor deny that a golf course is part of the park, just that you should stay off of them wherever you search.
Yeah, that was one label/characteristic I noted. I think that may be from the increased popularity of the hunt. Perhaps due to the success of the cooler chat here
Allison, I did have a "street reference" label, as well as "park reference" label for then they allude to the name of the park. The big thing for me is distinguishing landmarks. I've distinguished so far by "landmarks within park" and "landmarks outside/adjacent park". But I'm wondering if I want to make some category for the clues where they refer trees or park benches or playgrounds, as opposed to a unique landmark within a park
Hmmm, Medallion Master is here at midnight reading the cooler, yet is complaining that people are trying to put thought into the hunt? What's your interpretation on that TMK?

nite, tv and mom.
rush, that they do that speaks enough for their psychology on its own.
Well - it looks like my prediction of 7,248 posts before midnight of the pre-dig gig was off. So much for my mathematical logic on that one.
Right on Ares!

the curiosity level on what happened to the aroma in here? :)
I skipped all the posts since this afternoon so that is completely lost on me. Unless you're speaking of me?

Wow, looks like I have a rival! hehe. Nice job nalnam
They'll be back.
They always come back.
So, what was the consensus on the smallest park?
it was either rice or irvine.
a little competition is a good thing though, isn't it allison?

I used the top one.

Ares, was that the guess for the smallest park in St Paul or the smallest park it's been found in?
Cuz, Scribe and I think we have a "Stump Steve" park or two.
the question was the smallest that its been found in. though i just exteneded it to the smallest park with rice.
oh that's good liquor lady!
Well, I think we might have found a smaller one.
Did I miss anything exciting by skippin' all the posts?
weird ha!
not really.
You're always missing something when you skip the posts. I think there were some interesting things in there.
there's always Interesting stuff in here! thats why I slog every day!
Allison, it was secret code that only Ares would understand.
:-)
Tune in Tokyo, tune in Tokyo........

Maybe specific landmarks versus generic landmarks? That could be useful to know.
