It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Scribe, what is your first name and so you have instant messaging?
Hello fellow medallion hunters, and last years water cooler crew. I wish you all luck in this years hunt. I think the most likely site this year is Phalen. Other possibilities include a ramsey park out side of St. Paul like White Bear Lake Ramsey county park. What do you think???
I was impressed at how well the cooler crew figured out the clues last year. I never have done that well by meyself.
Hello! The new noodling board is up and running! Way Cooler!!!!!!!!!!!
New Daddy - I also think it just might be Phalen if it's in the city. That makes two of us with the same hunch. Only time will tell if we're right. Good to see you again. If you get a chance, check out our website! www.coolercrew.com
Lords, but this magnificent. Just think... Ittiz been a WHOLE year The Cooler Crew's been together, and now we're bock where we got our start! Ittiz gonna bee even funner this year 'cuz we're all like old friends!!!
I CAN'T WAIT FOR 2000'S HUNT!!!!!
What good sized parks R in No St Paul???? Ittiz never been in No St Paul. Gonna HAVE to bee a big park - $10 thou's a hunk o'money...
If they even THINK o'putting it in Battle Creek, I'm gonna kill me somebuddy!!!
Last year - bee4 I saw the error o'my ways (a'hem...) - I was out at Battle Creek since it was rite across from 3M and I could go on my lunch hours. Now that I'm NOT at 3M, they BEST NOT bee putting the damn Med there.
Battle Creek izz out. Should have been there LAST year, not thizz year. Forget it. Better NOT bee...
It could very well be Battle Creek....at least the part that isn't in Maplewood. I do have a hunch it will be at Phalen. The frog pond is out. Too many other activities scheduled for Como. Check out the schedule of events on the WC page.
Phalen, Phalen .................. been a good many years since it was there ............. hubby and I both had the same idea ....... out on that little island between the 3rd and 4th parking lots .......oh well just a guess.
Green - no huge parks in N. St. Paul - don't think the folks at city hall would take kindly to people diggin' up their stuff..... they would probably be like the people in Maplewood. There are a couple of good sized parks - like the ones we discussed the other night. That was you I was talkin' to you??? right???? was havin' 'tails - won't mention the first part of that word.
Green - hop on over to the other board - unless you can't peel yourself away. I know someone who is very good at figurin' these clues out - i will consult with him - if he's not tooooo crabby.
It's been a LONG time (relatively speaking) since it was in Phalen. Also, the recent trend (not counting last year) seems to be "hiding" it right out in the open in a really BIG park (like Phalen).
WooHoo!!!! Here We Go Again. Can Somebody (anybody) post what dates the medallion hunt will run through, so I know which week to take off work this time around!
The medallion hunt is really worth $10,000 this year! The buttons are on sale at Snyders Drugs in St. Paul and Ramsey County. I only know this because that's where I found mine.
I believe the first clues should come out during the week of the 24th...with the hunt really heating up that following weekend and the week after. Someone let me know if I'm wrong about this. I am planning some time off from work to hunt, too.
I think Terry's right about the hunt start date. I joined the fray the weekend of the first parade and that's scheduled for Saturday, January 30th this year. By then last year, there had been a week's worth of clues.
$10,000? It's about time they adjusted for inflation. I'll have to work on buying and registering a button from afar. Sa'good thing I still have plenty of friends in the Paul.
I have all those clues as well and in the form they were first presented. I also have "X marks the spot" maps from several years, excellent historical photos from past digs, and several original newspaper stories related to the medallion hunt. The main reason I haven't gotten around to posting all this stuff to coolercrew.com is because of time restraints. Creating time to type it all in has not been easy. If you (or anyone for that matter) want to volunteer to type out the clues for certain years and send them to me as e-mail, you be my guest. I can compare the accuracy against the actual Pioneer Press clues, and I can still write the explanations in a unique style not always befitting straight-laced publications.
Getting text stuff onto our coolercrew site is the easy part. Finding clean copies of photos and artwork from the 1950s and 60s could be trickier. But we're making progess!
Greg, talk to MomPlanet/Press about the 50's/60's stuff... Copy, I can be given/get and type up then send to you. Pics, they could maybee scan and send you... Or maybee we have to go down there and do it. Shouldn't bee too big a prob. Somebody oughta bee able to get there every once in awhile and do whatever.
But ask Mom, then let me know! I'll help as I can!
Ian... Lunch! Yummers!!! Typical Cooler Crew Member... Thinking o'food and your stomach! LOL!!!
Dates: Jan 29 - Feb 7.
I got my Collector's Edition of four buttons from Saintly City Cat Club...
And the reason ittiz $10,000 this year - or so I've been told - izz because MomPress izz 150 years old this year. Too, Terry says because they're selling these button collections ($10) Mom's able to give more bucks out.
Either way, I don't give a poop!!! LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!! Ten thou izz... TEN THOU!!!
Great work being done on our website! I have the book "The Official 1987 Winter Carnival Treasure Hunters Guide" It has the clues and explanations for 1952 - 1986. I think I have most of the rest from the Pioneer Press since then. If you would like to borrow it for the webpage, let me know. I can mail it to you. It's a bit amateurish...but has what we want it for.
Greg, you need my address again? Loan me what you want typed, and I'll type it up! NOT A PROB!!! You'll just have to tell me how/where to put copyrite stuff - stuff like that. But udderwise, typings no prob - I can type up whatever we need!!!
The best bet is for Green to get copies of pages from whatever Terry has. She says her book of clues is unprofessional, but I bet it photocopies easier than my stuff. Mine comes from microfilm and much of the text is wee, as in faded, 4-point Times. If Green and Terry can work together with Terry's stuff, that would be ideal. I'm in the midst of finishing up the 1980s (On our home page, I said I put some of it up, but I forgot to update medallion.html, and as far as I know I still only have one chance to update per day. Grrr.). If Green could tackle a decade of clues and Terry could tackle a decade, or something like that, we'd be on our way.
As for getting photos/artwork from Mom Press, I've already been in contact with Brett Benson at the Planet. I should get a chance to talk to him later today to see how/if they want to work with us on that. It all depends on how strong their original-material library is and how much they're willing to scan for us or allow us access to scan stuff ourselves.
Does anyone know if the medallion has to be hidden in a park? I have a hunch that this will be a year where it is hidden elsewhere. They did hide it under a mailbox years and years ago downtown.
Something tells me that they are going to hide it near the RiverCentre. Somehow, some way it is going to have something to do with the Wild.
Downtown would bee nice, particularly if the merchants are kind and let us use their potties!!! <g> Brad, I *think* Ter even came up with idea... Somebuddy did - Mom? I still think a mega huge park - that can handle lots o'people.
Ter, otay!!! So I typo-ed "typist"!!! SHHEEESH!!! LOL!!!
Greg... I wonder... Maybee if we contacted some of the Successful Diggers from bock then, they mite have stuff and mite allow us to scan it... Ittiz a thought.
Hi, everyone. I'm surprised that there's already talk in the Cooler. Just read the messages. I haven't heard anything about the prize money being $10,000. Is this a fact? I'm already piling information on parks and sites where it could be hidden. It wouldn't surpise me if the medallion is already hidden.
I've been thinking of places where it might be hidden this year. It's been in the southern area the last few years, so I'm thinking it'll be in the northern/middle section of Ramsey County. I was even thinking of something related to our new Gov. After all, the Capital's been a hiding site in the past.
Yes the Capital has been a hiding place in the past. That's the year our Daughter picked up the ear muffs it was hidden in. Then put the muffs back on the ground for another treasure hunter to find. She was hopeing the owner of the muffs would find them. Not knowing the medallion was hidden in them.
Treasure.... Yup, $10 thou with a registered button. Only $5 thou if you don't have a registered button. You must not have your button yet, or you'd know that! <g> It says it on the little card the button comes on...
And like you, I'm thinking north/northeast this year...
Scribe, what is your first name and so you have instant messaging?
Would those Sorels you refer to be GREEN'S??
Hello fellow medallion hunters, and last years water cooler crew. I wish you all luck in this years hunt. I think the most likely site this year is Phalen. Other possibilities include a ramsey park out side of St. Paul like White Bear Lake Ramsey county park. What do you think???
I was impressed at how well the cooler crew figured out the clues last year. I never have done that well by meyself.
The fun is about to start!!!
Maturity is a high price to pay for growing up!
I thought the medallion couldn't be hidden anywhere outside of St. Paul anymore after a park in Maplewood was dug up a few years back...
Sure it can, except not in Maplewood. Maplewood wasn't very happy. They promised to sue if it was hid there again!
Okay here is a complete guess, somewhere by the 2 large rocks on the west side of lake Phalen, say 6 paces to the south.?.
The fun has started for another glorious treasure hunt.
Hello! The new noodling board is up and running! Way Cooler!!!!!!!!!!!

What good sized parks R in No St Paul???? Ittiz never been in No St Paul. Gonna HAVE to bee a big park - $10 thou's a hunk o'money...
I am thinking it will be within the city this year. Phalen is a good choice, but Battle Creek might not be a bad guess, either.
Hay, Mom!!!

NORTH ST. PAUL.
Or The Frog Pond...
It could very well be Battle Creek....at least the part that isn't in Maplewood. I do have a hunch it will be at Phalen. The frog pond is out. Too many other activities scheduled for Como. Check out the schedule of events on the WC page.
(Ter... I was JOSHIN'... Fur Bee's sake... *I* know it won't bee in Como... Or... DO I????? WWWWWWAAAAAA!!!!!)
It better NOT bee Battle Creek... (steam coming out ears at thought...)

This is our year!!! Someone from the cooler crew will find the medallion this year! (I feel it in my bones!)
Phalen, Phalen .................. been a good many years since it was there ............. hubby and I both had the same idea ....... out on that little island between the 3rd and 4th parking lots .......oh well just a guess.

Green - I was over at the other board ........... just thought I would drop my thoughts.
As well you should, Q... As well you SHOULD!!!
Yust cuz you're not physically in the Twin Cities, that doesn't mean you CANNOT contribute or noodle the clues!!!!
YOU GO, GIRLFRIEN!!!
Green - hop on over to the other board - unless you can't peel yourself away. I know someone who is very good at figurin' these clues out - i will consult with him - if he's not tooooo crabby.
Phalen is a good choice.
