1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Swenke

When you see the mysterious black Beetle about, you will than know that you are in the correct park.

I'd say that it is in a park I'd say that it is in St. Paul

So how can anyone figure out the park that it is in yet......

Wow. Many, MANY posts.

It appears that everyone's been waiting long enough for the first clue. Lots of speculation, much beyond the probable correlation with the actual hunt (taking into consideration how much the first clue mattered in subsequent hunts); but there has been a great method of picking out the few tidbits that might matter. A lot of the time I'm amused by the amount of people who come flying into the web board after "cracking the clue," posting it with all their confidence... only to find it posted a hundred other times. Oh well. Personally, I'm going to take some more time to make sure that I've got my gear ready, and let the clues mature into something that I can work with before I grab my roto-tiller and dynamite and tear up random parks.

Oh, I also have an entertaining concern. The last post made by "me" was forged. Should any posts with my picture be showing up lacking basic punctuation, containing poor grammar, or anything of the like, please take care to follow up and find out that it's not me. So, should anyone wish to contact me, don't contact the idiot who leaked his (or her, heck, for all I know) dreck all over the place.

Think of a giant slide that they are building and the action could be the slide itself and the kids "flying" down it.

Oh, also, (falling victim to his own blade) I was wondering if there were a way to lengthen the amount of messages displayed when reading through them. I didn't care to read more than a few hundred (when there were a thousand sixty or so when I logged on) posts before I gave up and jumped to the end. I know that I'm sacrificing a lot of information, but I'm the impatient type. Now, if I were to be able to read the messages in blocks of 250 or so, I could easily skim past the worthless stock and pick out the real conversationalists. I just hate the repetition of >click< >read...read...read... <[or ignore...ignore...ignore...] >click< >wait< >repeat<

I already tried fooling with my preferences, I can't seem to make anything work the way I'd like. I thought it might perhaps be an administrative option or something. Thankee.

Re: Pig's Eye Park

I'm sure the person who first mentioned Pig's Eye is aware that our governor has in the past done ads for Pig's Eye beer.

Hmmm.....

Can anyone clue me in on the Black Beetle thing from 1253 ??

I'm assuming that the poster of that message drives a black Volkswagen and is expressing their confidence in their knowledge of where the medallion is hidden. ;)

Think of "failin" it has been years for that park to have seen the medallion. It has a large area to hide it.

Me and the Medallion Mobile

does hidden falls have any sledding hills, for something other than the cars that come to it?

Holly Wood

Hey there gang!!!

I grew up near Highland Park and have a few observations to add to the mix:

1) The best sledding hills are on the golf course near the water towers on Snelling and Highland Pkwy. They are off limits because of the GC and several blocks from 'huntable' park land - so it sure seems to fit with Clue #2.

2) The police station is on the park premises - huge tie in to 'don't get caught at the scene' criminal element reference.

3) Phalen is certainly due - but apparently doesn't have (great) sledding and just might be permanently off the list because of the near lawsuit in 1983 due to part of the park being in Maplewood (not really a true St. Paul park). Battle Creek is also not entirely St, Paul.

4) Como is way too recent to repeat - Highland was in 1994, kinda soon, but they used Cherokee in 1998 after 1992 - not too much different.

5) Highland is the only big park that could handle the crowds, is due, and fits the clues.

That Little Bast _ _ _ Puck is in Highland Park!!!!!!!!

Good Luck - keep the comments coming.....

Re: Pigs Eye... I mentioned that park last year and I *think* I was told that you can't actually get into it. May have my facts screwy here. But, anyway, it seems from what I remember to bee inaccessible. Or something like that....

Dang! Gettin' old's hard! Can't remember nuttin'!!!

Hey Hollywood: Not that I think it's in Phalen.......but a point to ponder......used to hang out at phalen many years ago......(former lifetime).....and I can tell you the park ie....where you go through the gates, is indeed in St. Paul.......st. paul police patrol the area.

I think everyone is getting suckered on the first clue... What about " Flying " Downhill.. could it be an airport in St. Paul and in a nearby park......any thoughts...or on the wrong track.....

Hay, Q... What's the weather like in San Antone?

Just got off the phone with MJ... She's "down in The Cities" as they say up Nord here, and izz reconoitering every ding-dang park in St. Paul!!! LOL!!! Girl's got it REALLY bad - WORSE THAN ME, if you can believe it!!!

Mon, 01/25/1999 - 10:46 AM Permalink
Q.

hey Green!!!

Weather here is great - 70 degrees and sunny

My take on the situation is:

1st clue - Park in St. Paul maybe hidden in something green.

2nd clue - it's not by the "big" slide at como (as soon as I read the clue that's what came to my mind - talked to mom and she said the same thing without me saying what I thought - of course we are related so maybe we have the same warped sense of thinking.)

We think they put it in a large park - large crowd would destroy a small park.

We think Phalen or Highland - we're probably wrong though - have to wait and see.

If only the Vikes would have won...............we could be there....

MJ's off today and has called me *5* times on her cell phone as she's driving around St. Paul!!! I'm about to die laughing!!!

You know, even if I never find The Med, I have so much dang fun doing this - but for the sleep deprivation... - and just have a blast!!!

Shure wish Hubs would put you on a plane and send you up here... I regret the Viking lose two-fold!!!

I've slogged thru posts since clue #2 came out. I'm kind of thinking so far that they are rather generic - stay off golf courses and it's near but not on a sliding hill. I do have to say I kind of like the criminal element in "scene", "caught" etc. Highland would be fine with me since it's close to my Honey's. Easy to warm up between diggin' adventures. Can't wait for #3! What time did the clue post last night? A little early it seems.

Hey Green! Ok, more thinking... the "action", "scene" movie connection makes sense too. UGH! So much to noodle so early on!

Marnin', SueBee!

The clock is off in The Coolers. It posted - the clue - at the correct time.

Yea... Last nite I was pooh-poohing the action/scene stuff... Now not so sure... Ittiz starting to make sense!!! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Back in '53 (I think it was '53... Am pretty shure it was...), where there were two hunts because the chest was found by the 6th clue, in the first clue o'the second hunt, the last line was something like "It's in the USA," ROFLOL!!!

Rite now, all I'm shure of - "Ittiz in the USA!!!"

Twelve hours... Just twelve hours til the next clue...

G Sax.... Just a new idea for flying downhill....a roller coaster gives you a thrill when you fly downhill...along with sleding and skiing. The outdoor attraction does not exclude summer references. The word nil means... zero...duck...and goose egg... The clues are telling us to stay away from golf fairway and green... to stay away from the popular outdoor attractions... Yet it could be in a park with all those qualities. Narrowing down the area in the park before disclosing the street names and the park itself. Just an idea from the one who hit on Juniper...and Longfellow.

Gotcha, Green. I was looking at some past year's clues and some of them really give away a lot of info early - what it's hidden in, street names etc...I wonder...

Mon, 01/25/1999 - 11:32 AM Permalink

I, too, am wondering if "nil" means anything. It's an obscure enough word that it could be important.

nil = nothing. It's a stretch, but could it mean the medallion is not hidden inside of anything this year, but just bare naked in the snow?

Smells like Como to me. But does anyone think they would have it there umpteen times in so many years? And for God's sake would somebody acknowledge my presence if only to say screw off.

Could the reference to sliding be skiing, as in ski jump, as in Battle Creek??

It was in an Old Navy sock last year and in Como the small ski hill and kiddie roller coaster make sense.

I keep thinking about the reference to waste and time in the last sentence of the 2nd clue. will it be by, in, or under something that has to do with waste? Interested in your thoughts.

I think it is on a softball field... The reasons.. clue 1 OUTdone clue 2 OUTdoor clue 3 OUTsomething.... I think the clues are saying its near all this stuff... flying downhill towards home plate......but you might get thrown out... going to home plate (wont get caught in clue 1 ) .. but you chances are nil if you dont try .... otherwise you will not win... any thoughts or am I in left field....
