2018 Pioneer Press State Fair Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Administrator on

A treasure hunt without snow?

It’s true.

State Fair Hunt logoOnce again, the St. Paul Pioneer Press is sponsoring a summertime hunt at the Minnesota State Fair. But you don’t have to find a hidden medallion.

You just need to solve a clue and submit a picture.

Each day of the Fair, a clue will be released in the newspaper, on TwinCities.com/StateFairHunt and on Pioneer Press social channels challenging hunters to locate a landmark.

We’re even including a detail of the landmark with each clue, so you’ll know when you’ve found it!

Contestants enter by submitting a selfie with the landmark and the hashtag #StateFairHunt on Twitter or Instagram. They can also enter through a form at TwinCities.com/StateFairHunt.

On a road beneath trees, near a dandy breeze
Sits a structure emerged.
What once was green is now more keen
For paint the owners splurged.

The Butterfly house was correct! An artist from Texas was commissioned this summer to add some color to the formerly green exterior of the building, where fairgoers can walk among butterflies recently emerged from cocoons.

Dropping a line would be so fine
Near this wooded retreat.
Rough timbers beckon and, if you reckon,
You'll get some shade off the street.

The official meaning of the clue.

The DNR Building was correct! With a calming fish pond in the back and large, shading trees all around, the timber-construction DNR Building is one of our favorite stops during the Fair.

This so-called garden requires pardon
Because there's sparse H2O.
If your mighty thirst must come first
It's full strength out the tap, yo.

Folks on this ride often confide
Of unmentionables let behind.
So if you board, ignore the untoward
And make sure your shoes you bind.

The official meaning of the clue.

It's the Sky Glider! The long path this ride takes over Machinery Hill offers just enough time for folks to lose a shoe, a sandal or whatever else they need to dispose of, easily visible from the rooftops below.

Never go feral against ink by the barrel
Lest your name be smudged.
A few years back, Heritage sacked

It's not very far to get to Har Mar
From this spot of verse.
If you go rogue, you won't be en vogue
To win you must rehearse.

The official meaning of the clue.

It's the Leine Lodge Bandshell Stage! We threw a few performer names in this one -- Har Mar Superstar, En Vogue -- to help narrow down the venue. Great guesses everyone!

On Fair's first day, you'll hear them say,
"This is where die-hards stand."
You'll have to wait to be first at this gate
If first at the Fair you've planned.

The official meaning of the clue.

It's the front gate of the State Fair! These gates, on Snelling Avenue at Midway Parkway, draw folks looking to get into the Fair "first" on opening day. It's where the news crews hang out opening day, too.

This her is a redo,
Unsolved in last year's hunt.
Never found, he stands his ground
Cafe behind, playing out front.

The official meaning of the clue.

It's the sculpture that fronts the Caribe Cafe! We used him in a clue last year that went unsolved, so thanks for IDing it this year! We don't think the editors would let us use him for a third year.
