Had a chance to look it over. Seems like it's made out of copper, or a copper alloy, it's got that kind of color. But amazingly not even a tinge of green. The photo on the auction definately doesn't do it justice, the detail is really nice. It seems that whomever owned the coin took really good care of it, or at least it sat someplace safe for a long time.
It also is the size of the 1886 token shown on Ron Young's site, slightly smaller than a dime (15mm to be exact). Oddly it doesn't mention St. Paul on it, and says it's a souvenir of the 1887 Ice Carnival. But after looking at images of the 1887 ice palace, it's definately the same as the one pictured on the coin (and the 1886 one mentions "Ice Carnival" as well). So it seems like this one was a continuation of the 1886 token.
It makes me wonder if Ron Young doesn't have one of these (that would be amazing, considering he's got a very nice collection), as the only one he shows from 1887 was a different coin that he mentions is the size of a half dollar.
I'll post a couple pictures tonight, if the macro function on my camera works that close up, heh.
Well, a few days later than I'd promised, but it took some time to get my good camera to take these. Keep in mind this token is less than the size of a dime. There's quite fine detail on this.
Just thought some of you might be interested in this:
Howie Register is organizing a Winter Carnival Collectors Show. It will be on January 12th at the South St. Paul VFW. Admission is $5 or free with a Winter Carnival Button. If you are interested in selling, trading or displaying in the show tables will be $25.
The show will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at the South St. Paul VFW. The hours will be 7 a.m. till 4 p.m. You may set up any time after 8 a.m. The cost of the tables have not been set yet but it will probably be $25. We are still in the planning stages. Contact me the first week of December when I'll have more information.
I was going through the 2007 WC Button booklet and noticed they have a 2007 Winter Carnival Commemorative Button they're giving away this year on Jan 26th. Only 2,500, but I'll have to remember to get over there for one.
I wonder if the PP will have another treasure hunt button this year like last year's...
lemme know the details of where on the 26th, I'm in town with nothing planned for the daytime - I'd be happy to go stand in line somewhere if I had directions.
It'll be at Harriet Island, the Merchandise booth in the tent (Once ya get to Harriet though, I think the rest will be pretty self explanatory), which opens at 10am that friday. I can't imagine there'll be a huge line or anything, but I'm gonna try and show up a lil early to make sure.
Don't know how strict they'll be, but there's a coupon in the button booklet for a free one, so ya might want to bring that along.
Wahoo! ...was out at Har-Mar last night and ran into the King's "tax collectors." They explained that I owed back-taxes for my three boys, and therefore must buy the King's four-pack of buttons....quite the deal....
...but if tax collectors really looked that good, we'd all be looking forward to April 15 a whole lot more!
Here's where I used it a couple of years back.

Does this look like someone just used a popsicle stick for a winter carnival button?
Maybe I need to make some up and sell them....
