Now I will have a pictorial version of WC that maybe they will "get" why I'm so wierd.

until they've experienced it for themselves, vino, no one ever "gets" it.

I'm curious to see how many people at my new job even know about the hunt, it's kind of a mixture of people from the cities and country folk  I suppose I will have alot of explaining to do this year :eyeroll:

you should wear a vulcan outfit...

and chase people around, trying to draw a V on their face....

It would look even more insane

The best-known practice of the Vulcans - marking people with grease paint as a sign of allegiance - has drawn some complaints over the years, especially from women who did not want to be marked.

In the past, Vulcans wore grease paint on their cheeks and gave women a check-to-cheek "smooch" or "smudge." After complaints in the 1970s, the smudge was largely abandoned. Now, the Vulcans use grease paint sticks to mark participants, mostly children, with a "V."

From the 1965 clues courtesy of cooler crew.com

The Vulcan and his men utter many whoops and yips,

As they smooch the lovely girls and smudge them with their lips.

Some distance from the hiding place and high up in the air,

Are stacks, that pour forth sooty smoke by more than just a pair.

They still wore the grease paint in the 80's up to at least 1991 in the Little Canada Day's Parade.

My mother has plenty of photos of me bawling my eyes out after being smudged from them.

of all things to be afraid of as a child - men with facial hair... or apparently painted on facial hair.

When I got a little older, they would still chase me through the front yard and grab me and smudge me during the parade.

ahhh. those were the days, being chased through your grandma's yard by a man in a bright red jumpsuit.

I recall my youth, going to Kolachke days in Montgomery with my grandmothers family and watching the parade. When I would here those sirens coming I would run away, CRYING, so deathly terrified of the Vulcans. I honestly believed they were the devil!

Funny you should mention that. I was reading some history on the vulcans today and they originally had horns on their heads. Then they changed them to feathers. Then later they lost the feathers and went to a single thing. (mohawk shaped ridge?) Can't remeber the verbage used to describe it now. But they must have looked like devils when they had horns.

we used to chase them down, when we were lil kids.... at the Payne Avenue Parade....

the "V" was too sought after to stick around in any one place for any amount of time, or else they'd get mobbed by tons of us little kids...

I also believe that, it was after one of those parades... 1994 or '95, which was where we first got the idea to steal the ICP paint design....

One of the ladies down at Twin Cities Magic & Costume on W. 7th, told me a couple years ago, that they were the store that those guys purchase most of their grease marker things from.... they get some kinda "vulcan discount" or something.....

my dog dragged me out past the mosh pit again today.... I got some pics with my new digital cam.

will post them soon, hopefully.... if I can get the camera and the computer to get along with eachother....

the pit itself looks the same, only with snow... kinda surprising, since this summer it was so overgrown, it just looked like a thick forest.... snapped a couple of that.... along with one of "ClueMaster's crop circle" area.....and a few others..

Diggin - I am right there with you!

I was soooo afraid of them. One year I ran and got the hose and said if they got any closer I'd dowse them.

looking back - it's funny.

then, it was terrifying.

Can't anyone look at old plat maps in Ramsey County. I did some free lance work for the Dakota County EPA once and needed to look at maps and just had to sign in at the desk and state why I wanted to look at them and in I went.

I spent part of my time there looking at maps from around where I lived.
