frosti, since we had the dal and jethro show on monday, the frosti and jethro show yesterday, i figure we can have the ares and jethro show today. chime in at any time though :)
so lemme see if i have your stance straight, jethro. its ok for the state to take a life as punishment for a crime, but its not ok for a doctor to take one by performing an abortion? seems a little inconsistent to me if a life is a life, an inconsistency i'm trying to understand. now, if i've misunderstood your position, i withdraw my question.
Not if you think about it. But I have come to the conclusion that that is too much to ask on these boards. The difference is based on the actions of the individual. Someoen on death row has committed a violent act and has been given due process. An unborn child get no due process and has done nothing to warrant death.
Pro-life is respect for ALL life. I am adamently against the death penalty also. I believ only God himself has the responsibility to make that decision.
In regards to the death penalty I believe in punishment here on earth and a long stint of punishment! There is peace in death! I don't want Charles Manson to have peace here on earth! Once He dies, God may deal with him the way He sees just and I am at peace with that. I also don't see how we regard murder as a crime and justify the death penalty.........it is just as wrong as justifing abortion.
Jethro we don't know for sure but what I do know is that the time God has allotted for criminals life span I want the punishment to be certain here on earth! God can deal with eternity but to kill them takes our right to punishment and justice away here!
Scribe, the problems with life imprisonment are, first, it's not always for life, and second, most long-term prisoners manage to make a pretty cushy life for themselves. I saw a documentary about Richard Speck (anyone remember him?) and he had absolutely everything he wanted.
I think prison terms should include hard -- extremely hard -- labor.
perhaps, jethro, but we'll never know that will we?
now i will agree that inmates do have things way too cushy in prison. i remember reading a quote from charles manson somewhere to the effect of "i don't want to be paroled. i've got too many things going on now. i've got a web site to tend to" what the hell???
I agree with you totally Muskwa! I believe we are putting the death penalty in to band-aid the problem with our justice system!
Prisoners should get life and that should mean life! We have already proven that "reform" does not happen! They should not have cable TV or a menu choice for meals! This is not a hotel! They should not be able to get a free college education......some punishment maybe I should deal drugs to get caught and pay for mine! And they should not be able to work out and muscle up! Thats a great idea, make them in prime physical condition so they can over power the guards! Our prisons should have basics and thats it! Also I think that if you are convicted of a crime you do lose some of your basic civil liberties! Prison should be a place even the criminals don't want to got to!
I think the guy who shot Reagan should have been gunned down on sight. And I would say that about anyone who tries to kill the President, no matter who is in office.
Our prisons should have basics and thats it! etc . . .
Absolutely! And why are we paying $40,000 a year per prisoner to incarcerate them? Why aren't prisons self-sufficient? ie, grow their own food, contract out for labor and put the proceeds toward their upkeep?
Yeah, Scribe, that pumping-up opportunity is so self-defeating. And I also don't think the system should bend over backwards to allow these guys to practice their religions. I mean c'mon -- sweat lodges? If they'd spent more time in sweat lodges and listening to the elders, they wouldn't be in prison in the first place.
Barbaric? I disagree. So would Polly Klaas's father.
I would say this. If there is overwhelming evidence, there shouldn't be an appeal, and that could be handled as a portion of the sentencing.
If there is an appeal it should be within 1 month after the trial and sentence executed immediately after the verdict....if innocent, let them go, if guilty, hang em'.
They let the innocent go right away, so they should dispatch the guilty just as quickly.
The present system is a drain on the taxpayer and a boon to the lawyer. It is also inhumane to keep these people dangling for 14 to 20 years until the cash runs out.
from what i understand of the cocktail used in an injection, scribe, its not exactly peaceful. of course that's why you get a nice general anesthetic first.
I do believe that we are to abstain from "cruel and unusual" punishment. That is what makes us different from them. But I don't think it is cruel or unusual for them to work their asses off all day to support themselves! The pioneers of this country did it!
It's called teaching responsibility through justice!
that's akin to putting a death row inmate with suicidal tendencies on a suicide watch to keep him from hanging himself in his cell so that the execution can proceed as planned next week.
I do think that some can be rehabilitated. But how do you tell?
Some years ago, Norman Mailer and other "elite" leftists went to bat for a multiple murderer, Jack something-or-other, who had written a book from prison called In the Belly of the Beast. Their pressure got him an early release, and he went right out and killed again.
I was considering addressing that one also Ares.
Glad you made it here!
Thanks Muskwa!
frosti, since we had the dal and jethro show on monday, the frosti and jethro show yesterday, i figure we can have the ares and jethro show today. chime in at any time though :)
You're a big boy Ares, you can take care of yourself. But, I got your 6 if need be.
so lemme see if i have your stance straight, jethro. its ok for the state to take a life as punishment for a crime, but its not ok for a doctor to take one by performing an abortion? seems a little inconsistent to me if a life is a life, an inconsistency i'm trying to understand. now, if i've misunderstood your position, i withdraw my question.

jethro, pro-life or anti-abortion?
You are loadin' up that thar' defintion now ain't ya?
Pro-life is respect for ALL life. I am adamently against the death penalty also. I believ only God himself has the responsibility to make that decision.
In regards to the death penalty I believe in punishment here on earth and a long stint of punishment! There is peace in death! I don't want Charles Manson to have peace here on earth! Once He dies, God may deal with him the way He sees just and I am at peace with that.

Simple math:
Murder=Murder Death=Death
you saw that one coming a mile away, didn't you, jethro? yes i am.
an answer, please :)
Now, Scribe, how do you know there is peace in death?
What definition do you want to use, ares?
Jethro we don't know for sure but what I do know is that the time God has allotted for criminals life span I want the punishment to be certain here on earth! God can deal with eternity but to kill them takes our right to punishment and justice away here!
i'm just going by the titles, jethro. to me, they're pretty much self-explanatory.
Now, Scribe, how do you know there is peace in death?
because while humans may not, god does forgive all who come to him and ask for forgiveness. even in death. at least that's what i believe.
Scribe, the problems with life imprisonment are, first, it's not always for life, and second, most long-term prisoners manage to make a pretty cushy life for themselves. I saw a documentary about Richard Speck (anyone remember him?) and he had absolutely everything he wanted.

I saw that too. At his request, prison officials gave him female hormones so that he could grow breasts for his boyfriends.
Killers should be put to death the day following their guilty verdict.
Maybe God intends for murderers to be executed.
Sloop, don't you think there should be any appeals process?
perhaps, jethro, but we'll never know that will we?

He just keeps on giving.

I know, I know. It's barbaric.
And one I would probably take if it was a loved one of mine that was murdered.
Our prisons should have basics and thats it! etc . . .
Absolutely! And why are we paying $40,000 a year per prisoner to incarcerate them? Why aren't prisons self-sufficient? ie, grow their own food, contract out for labor and put the proceeds toward their upkeep?
That's easy, goes back to the liberals and their "inhumane treatment" of prisoner law suits.
Right on Dal!
They should work so hard just for the basics by supper time they fall asleep in their meal!
dal, barbaric would be solving the problem of finding witnesses for executions by using the 12 people who handed down the sentence.
Yeah, Scribe, that pumping-up opportunity is so self-defeating. And I also don't think the system should bend over backwards to allow these guys to practice their religions. True. And many people feel that they could vote on a jury for the death penalty, but not watch the execution or "push the button."
I mean c'mon -- sweat lodges?
At least they said no to the peyote.
Jethro...
I guess I sounded a bit fanatical.
I would say this. If there is overwhelming evidence, there shouldn't be an appeal, and that could be handled as a portion of the sentencing.

I think justice is only served by punishment! Death? We are all going to die! Most of us aren't going to get the peaceful lethal injection either!
An eye for an eye. Why be humane to people who aren't themselves humane?
from what i understand of the cocktail used in an injection, scribe, its not exactly peaceful. of course that's why you get a nice general anesthetic first.
Yeah, and they sterilize the needle first.
I think justice is only served by punishment!
Some believe that punishment should not be the only goal of justice. What about rehabilitation, deterrence, or retaliation?
Bring back public hangings.
I do believe that we are to abstain from "cruel and unusual" punishment. That is what makes us different from them.
But I don't think it is cruel or unusual for them to work their asses off all day to support themselves!
The pioneers of this country did it!
It's called teaching responsibility through justice!
:::CLAP::: :::CLAP::: :::CLAP:::
Well said Scribe!
Yeah, and they sterilize the needle first.
and the purpose of that is exactly what? :)
that's akin to putting a death row inmate with suicidal tendencies on a suicide watch to keep him from hanging himself in his cell so that the execution can proceed as planned next week.
I don't think it is cruel or unusual for them to work their asses off all day to support themselves!
It might be unusual (as compared to now), but it's certainly not cruel.
An added bonus is that they could learn skills useful after their release (for those who will be released).
I do think that some can be rehabilitated. But how do you tell?

That is an excellent question. Unfortunately, I don't have the answer. A "one-strike" law?
I'm not so sure he's powerless. There haven't been inspectors in there for years, and he has a lot of clandestine support from other countries.
He's developing weapons of mass destruction. Are you gonna wait til he drops a missle on your trailer?
And the reasoning for proposing this new expansion of our war is...?
Who knows?
I think the administration learned its lesson on leaking intelligence reports to the media during the Afghanistan affair.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
I don't think THIS administration wafts info to the press to see how it flies. "W" just let's it fly...and he's got the nuts to do it...
SO REAGANESQUE.......I love it.
Saddam's gonna have a missle down his shorts and good riddance.
