Happy Thanksgiving!! Just thought I would drop a line and say hello to everybody. Got a new jacket and it got me thinking about the hunt. Hard to believe that there is snow on the ground again. Only another couple of months til they hide the medallion!
I agree, if you find anything I would be up for it. Especially basketball. When I started for the B team at Francis M. Grass Jr. High they called me RoboPick. Now I am more like the round mound of rebound.
Random selection. They pick phone numbers / addresses out of the book and call them.
We got a notice by mail a few weeks ago and kinda ignored it, then they called a couple nights ago and asked again - figured 'Oh, what the heck' and agreed.
We get a "Portable People Meter" - a cellphone sized gizmo that picks up signals from broadcast Radio and TV and records when we listen to what. You plug it into a hub at night and it transmits the data to home base. Simple as that.
Seems kinda creepy and big-brother-ish, but when they asked us for our demographic data, they didn't get into anything personal like Social Security or Workplace loactions - just some of the basics like age and a rough income level for the household. Seems innocent enough. Maybe those black helicopters will stop following me to work every day now.
actually it's theoretically possible (and most likely probable) that both satellite and cable receivers can transmit viewing data back to their systems for analysis.
Question MD on your "portable people meter", do you get anything for allowing them to monitor your usage? I seem to remember my aunt in California participates in a consumer product monitor (scans in barcodes on items she purchases to a device that sends the info in to a company) and she gets some kickbacks (coupons, gift cards, etc)for allowing them to do that.
Did I forget to mention we get PAID for doing it? Not much, but I think its something like $50 or $75 a month per household. There is supposed to be some sort of 'payment' included with the first kit when it arrives - we'll see what happens.
I'm just glad when I subscribed to DSL, I opted for the non-wireless hub. Didn't need it, anyway. I still think - even with encryption - it's kinda spooky that someone could be stealing your porn from over 100 feet away.
I'm just thinking satellite receivers have to be plugged into a phone line, they say it's to maintain your account (and make sure you're only getting to use however many boxes you pay for), but it's obviously easy to send any data from the box that they want.
Cable is the same thing now that they've gone "digital" with the fancier cable boxes, those can send information right back to the source. Though I haven't had cable in a while, but I assume you can switch to pay per view channels and order movies directly from the box (the information has to get from the box back to the cable company somehow so they know what movie to play).
Ahh, cool. I wondered if you got some compensation anyway.
Shoot, when I get my own place, they're welcome to monitor my tv/internet viewing habits, especially if I get paid enough to cover my monthly cable/internet bil.
We havent' plugged our reciever in to the phone line EVER. Never had a problem. we can order Pay per view over the phone or on the computer there is no reason they need to be attached to my phone line...not to mention my living room just doesn't have a phone jack...our house it set up extremly different than the home I grew up in where there was a phone jack in nearly every room...I think we have 1 in our kitchen, 1 in our master bedroom and Mikes home office. I'm not about to add a jack because the satalite co wants to have access to my box.
I do not like the new cable boxes...oh, and they arn't a box anymore, they are a slick black flat ufo thing-something outa startrek. They look like my wireless router. There are no buttons to push and can only be accessed with a remote control. so you have to have a rc now which I pay a monthly fee for. no going up and pushing up or down buttons. I do not like it.
A cable box conversation in the not-too distant future...
I'm sorry Jana. I'm afraid I can't do that. I know that you and Cluey were planning to disconnect me and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.
sooo the other day I went to a friends house after work.
It was dark out (after5pm) and it had lightly snowed that day.
I stepped on to his walkway and slipped. Falling knees and wrist to the ground. ooooowie! I'm okay. When I looked down I saw I had slipped on NOT ICE under the snow but a Pioneer Press newspaper FLAT in a plastic bag. So flat that it couldn't be seen under the snowcover.
I bring the newspaper in. Later mention that I brought in the newspaper from hell. I go over and read the front page....
It talked about people dying from falls!!!!!!
just walking and slipping, then breaking hips and then dying soon afterwards!!!

I think I heard there is 2 ways for dvr to be hooked up - by phone and by cable??
I would think that regular cable boxes could send signals back with what you watch anyhow - so is big bro really watching what we watch?
I mean so what if they know I watch dog bounty hunter all the time...
tape poker and don't watch it...
tape "the doctors" and fast forward it and watch it in 5 mins.
