1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Eastside Boys

Is it that obvious that the treasure is in a park near a golf course?

Hello I was wondering if someone could tell me the rules to the Medallion Hunt.

Has anyone talked about a "criminal element" on the first clue - ya know - "won't get caught" and "wrong scene", as scene of the crime?

Eastside Boys

Jim Highland is one, Phalen and Como are some others. Is there any more?

Lady the rules are listed in the St.Paul paper in the local section 10B.

Eastside Boy - Re: Where would you be released - if you were caught. I remember one time, me and a couple of buddies were busted for stealing golf balls from the water hazards at Phalen Park. The assistant Greenskeeper took us to the lakeside pavilion and well - maybe I'm reading way too much into the first clue....Why do we think it's highland park or phalen anyway - just because of the reference to the golf course?

Sun, 01/24/1999 - 3:09 PM Permalink
snostar

I don't think the first clue has anything to do with a golf course-- they just don't want people digging them up.

Golden Boy

I agree Angel02 - is there another reason why people are saying Phalen or Highland? We're probably reading too much into the 1st clue. I'm going to check the previous years to see if there was anything to the first clue other than establishing it was hidden in a park in RC.

I can't think of any important info ever given on the first clue. Of course I haven't been a hunter for very many years, so I could be mistaken.

In response the treasure being hidden in Maplewood.... It was in Wakefeild park (maplewood) in 1982, then in 1983 it was in Phalen. The city limit line for St.Paul dividing off of Maplewood is at the far north part of the park. Phalen IS A ST. PAUL CITY PARK. I have all the clues for every hunt. I have been hunting for 23 years as an adult, and hunting as a kid with my parents. I wasn't at the bar last night because I had to work, but I would of liked to become part of the "coolercrew", and meet Terry V, and Green. I think I have some good input. I am on AOL and your not so I don't know if I can e-mail you. I'm new at this computer stuff.

ALSO >>>>>My idea of the "wrong scene" clue means The golf course is the wrong scene.... but what would be the right scene???? POSSIBLLY the right scene would be a disk golf course....the only one is in Highland Park. Terry post a message on how I can get ahold of you for the info the coolercrew web site needs. Bye for now.

Ah-Hah Angel02: Although the first clues for recent hunts ('96 thru '98) only refered to either the city limits or ramsey county, the 1st clues for hunts '91 thu '95 had significant info which could be used (ie; references to buildings, streets, or what the medal was hidden in). So there might be something to the "criminal element" thing. Whadya think?

Are there any street names having to do with people that have been either caught or released?

Just a quick note here.

There used to be a Ramsey County workhouse along Lexington Ave. in Como. Ittiz mentioned in clues back in the 50's and 60's. Ittiz old history though and not likely, in my opinion, to be of use this year. But then who knows?

I'm afraid I'm all out of bright ideas, but there's always tomorrow! Then I can work on squeezing the life out of it until I've got the nitty gritty details all worked out!

When was it in Como last? Phalen?

Sun, 01/24/1999 - 3:44 PM Permalink

Isn't the Ramsey County Jail located near Kellogg Park in Dntwn SP? Then again that would be a terrible place to hide it - considering the mayhem that would cause to dntwn during the work week. Has the medallion ever hidden in a dntwn park in the past?

Sun, 01/24/1999 - 3:45 PM Permalink
Crazy Hunta'

what's the url of the place you are etting the old clues n stuff? valentine

Sun, 01/24/1999 - 3:46 PM Permalink

Ya, you're right it could be Kellogg, but that's kinda a bad spot doncha think?

Then again Angel02 - the jail is on the bluff and can be seen by alot of areas south of the river & dntwn - including Harriet Island & Navy Park - although wasn't it hid at Harriet recently - a couple of years ago?

Crazy hunta - I have clues dating all the way back to 1952. Our website at www.coolercrew.com has clues from the past 10 years or so and the webmaster is working on the rest. Check it out for all kinds of information.

So - does anyone have any ideas on the first clue besides the obvious St. Paul city park reference? I say the golf course reference is nothing - they propbably had some compliants last year and wanted to cover this up front. The implied "criminal element" reference in "won't be caught" and "wrong scene" as in scene of the crime may be something - although we may not be able to use it until later clues. Anything else anyone can gleen from the first clue??

The web site for the CoolerCrew has the clues and explanations on the web site. The Winter Carnival has the last year's clues with explanations. The clues/exlanations from what I gather were provided by research in the Pioneer Plants archives which is available to everyone if I'm correct. The CoolerCrew is made up of hunters from last year's hunt who decided to gather information to help other fellow hunters. They continued to get together over the summer and Mom (Pioneer Press) add a website for them to continue talking and keeping in touch. In a previous message, I was thinking about Phalen Park with the connection to Maplewood. Highland has a jail somewhere by it. If you look through the message from early this afternoon you'll find what a fellow hunter found when she went there earlier today. If it's Harriet Island, where the golf course? I have to step away for a while. Will check back later.

The webmaster also has the clues...and is working on getting them all posted. He is volunteering for that tiresome task in addition to his regular work and family life. Check out the site. www.coolercrew.com

Ittiz still to early to tell what the clues mean. Think we should all be patient and wait for the next couple to come out. The next one should be posted tonight at 11:30. Then the excitement all begins again for our noodling minds.
