1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

I think the medallion is hidden at Battle Creek Park, it is a large park and able to hold all the crowds, and the last time the medallion was hidden there was 4 years ago in 95. Thats where the 9, 5 and sometimes a 4 comes in.

Out last nite at Highland and drove around the St. Francis area and our thoughts are that we won't have solid info until Sunday due to the high $$$$$$ amount.

Chris,

I think BC is a deffinate fore runner. It fits most clues, and the 9-5-4 has been the hardest to tie.

Hello Ambassador, How RU my Boyyyy? Lots of people noodling on wheels last night. If the puck is in a big park they should have given it away by now. If it is in a small park we should know by the big thaw. Anyone have an estimate of how many more searchers there are this year as compared to previous years? I imagine that MOM put it somewhere to minimize damage (i.e. a parking lot).

I like the BC idea - not bad at all - but there are miles and miles of Ski/bike trails there - any ideas??

I saw a few people digging at the baseball diamonds at BC last night...how can you tie in the historical clues and iconoclast?

How does the 9-5-4 tie in to BC?

I agree! The NewAll clue was to blatent and soon. They will let us narrow to a handful, if not the park, by the end of the weekend. I have a feeling it will be a huge park, with seven clues pinpointing the the mendalion in the park.

it was in BC - in 1995 - and well that was 4 years ago....

Christopher Campbell mentioned that the medallion was hidden in BC in 95, just 4 years ago!?!

What do you think?

I agree with Rojo here... Usually, if it is in a bigger park, we know by now... 1997 - Como Park we knew by the 4th clue... 1995 - Battle Creek - we knew by the 5th clue... 1994 - Highland Park - we knew by the 5th clue... (although I should hope they would make it a bit harder this year with all the $$ involved!!!) Right now, by gut keeps telling me a smaller, less well-known park....

Morning all- I am ipressed with the 9,5,4 BC theory. Do you feel then that the golf course clue implied that there is no golf course. Any feedback on the Palace area. St. Francis nearby, a school nearby, Jefferson.

it will be in a park in garage logic b4 its at taylors falls

Is the anagram theory getting you to St. francis ?

I can't help but feeling its not in one of the bigger parks anymore. Why not give the location away by now if its in Battle Creek? Just saying so would be like saying its in the city of Richfield.......

I am going with Capitol.....

One thing I know for sure is its not in Rice--They wouldn't threaten ice sculptures, and as a downtowner, I have seen that every searchable spot has been overturned already--too many people with excess energy over luch...

I thought the 9-5-4 thoery was giving awy the item that little disc is hidden in....a KS95 bumper sticker (94.5)

This year by far is the most frustrating search. Also, referring to Palace, "a blast from the past', could mean the ice palace. Dont know what the numbers are there though, have someone checking it out as I speak.

PERSONALLY, THERE IS A BIG FIELD AS SOON AS YOU PULL IN THE PARKING LOT, IT'S ON YOUR RIGHT, I THINK THATS WHERE THE MEDALLION IS, THAT WHJEN WHEN THE CROUDS COME, THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM

I do think the golf course clue refered to NO golf course, and also, at B.C. on the backstops, there are no golfing signs

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 11:49 AM Permalink
Fever has begun

CC, you're referring to BC?

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 11:50 AM Permalink

CC, are you talking about the big sliding hill behind the elementary school?

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 11:52 AM Permalink
christopher campbell

Yes, Also everyone, i really don't think they would put it in a small park because when the tell us what park it's at, it's going to be nuts, and they will need a big park to accomadate all the hunters

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 11:52 AM Permalink
Fever has begun

The top of that hill is exactly where it was found las time it was there. It is definately big enough to accomodate a lot of hunters. Ruth, referring to Babe Ruth. Adorning the front door, any ideas there?

I still want somebody to explain how iconclast fits in B.C.?

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 11:57 AM Permalink
christopher campbell

I think the Ruth is refering to babe and he is the man of fame, but i don't think it's on top of the hill because one of the clues says don't get to colse to the action

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 11:58 AM Permalink

midway stadium is visible from newell ruth could refer to baseball and saint could be st paul saints

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 11:59 AM Permalink

iconoclast, well, it could refer to James j. Hill, the railroad tycoon, he was an iconoclast, and on the opposite side of the park, are located the railroad tracks

Chris It might mean though you are in the right area. Don't think too specifically. A lesson learned from reading well+new = Newell

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 12:01 PM Permalink
christopher campbell

But the wouldn't put it at Newell, it is too small, and too early in the "game", plus, there is so much money on the line, they wouldn't put it at a small park, and it needs to be large to accomodate all the crazy hunters

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 12:01 PM Permalink
christopher campbell

yes, but Polly, where else could it be in that area?, with all those things?

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 12:02 PM Permalink
St.Polly Girl

I agree but tell that to the people who have dug it up .

Newell fit too many clues..

NEW TO THE WATER COOLER, LIKE THE IDEA OF BC, COULD #,S ADORN FRONT DOOR MEAN 3M? PAST & BLAST COULD REFER TO BATTLE. MAN OF FAME IN REFERENCE TO TOME, LONGFELLOW & KIPLING STREETS IN PARK

Yep, i am going back to B.C. today and it will be my mission to find that damn medallion

Hi- I never have shared, but...I think that a small park that has not been mentioned works in a real interesting way- but you will have to look up stuff in an encyclopedia- KEllogg is crucial and you need to know the correct Kellogg- they are indeed playing a game with 2 very famous historical people with the last name Kellogg- it is NOT Battle Creek- which is connected to one of the Kelloggs. (cereal- Battle Creek, Michigan) 2 real famous Kelloggs and one linked to Minnesota of historical international fame for a huge famous treaty he wrote which is in every American History book and encyclopedia with his name on it! Iconclaust fits in too!-which impacts many clues. Also this park has a historical Library in sight for learning on Kellogg and streets 4 and 5 on each side which equal nine and planes fly overhead heading downtown and a new bridge named after a historical warrior (Wabasha) is nearby, and the last bridge had been built a century ago (1900) and it had been a 9 span bridge and I believe it was BLASTED down. Also, it is the 4th time this bridge has been built. I am a librarian, so I probably am getting too deep, but knowing the correct (Minnesota) KEllogg is important! I think they are putting it in this small very historical park and won't be very specific about it being there to the end to have us digging up all these large parks that kinda fit. I think there are statutes and monuments there also of historical importance to St. PAul as well that may fit, I have to go check the scene out.. Well, that is all I have to say... I may be totally wrong and realize this when the next clue issues forth. ( The capitol Mall kinda fits too and the MN History center has Kellogg street run past it which you can see form the Capitol Mall- alot fits the Capitol MAll too) I am certain they want you away from a big park with the golf and sliding and sports....Good Luck, and has anyone else thought of Kellogg PArk?

chris we talked about this last noc no real response now today its a new bunch of people well when are you going out?

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 12:13 PM Permalink
christopher campbell

But again, no one seems to understand, there are going to thousands of people trying to find this thing on the last night, they will not put it in a small park because it can't accomodate the people and it will get literally destroyed

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 12:14 PM Permalink

Probably around 3 for an hour or 2 and then again tonight after the 7th clue, about midnight

Anyone else have anything to add about the Battle Creek theory?

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 12:21 PM Permalink
David D.

A close personal friend of mine, Wendy B., suggested that the "9" mentioned could refer to the old one room school house at highland. It used to be named "Webster Magnet School #9". This also ties in with the clue about learning. Plus, old and new could mean the Highland schools.
