It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.
Alan and Jill
By the way, Mr. Allison, are you going to try to arrange a warm weather hunt this year?
Glad to see others are excited about the hunt that is soon to come. Went and bought my button last night. Have friends coming out for their first time with me this year. The 23rd huh? I can't wait.
I imagine the first official day of the hunt would be Sunday the 23rd, but since the clues come out at 11:30PM the night before, the hunt technically starts on the 22nd. As for a warm weather hunt, shame on you! What would King Boreas say?
Or perhaps I read that wrong and you weren't actually asking me to control the weather. In that case, the answer is the hunt was largely designed last year. The problem came when I suddenly realized I had no clue how to go about getting sponsors, especially corporate ones. On the other hand, Como Zoo, which declined to do it last year, did say they wanted to do it this year. I suppose I ought to contact them and make sure that's still the case. It would have to be in either the early spring or late fall before the park gets too crowded with summer traffic.
I'm with you Jett! It's no fun if there's not any digging to be done! I can't wait for the Hunt to begin. I'll be priming my decoding skills with past clues to get me back into the swing of things in the few weeks before the hunt begins. Good luck to all!
Allison Wonderland- If you don't know how to find sponsors, I think I can help you with that. I'll put it to you this way, I race go-karts, and have a $23,000 budget, from a large company, for this racing season. I am very knowledgeable in marketing, and I have contacts in corporate offices. One stipulation, however, I would like to be involved in writing the clues for whatever you will be hiding. And if you wouldn't want help with that, i'll still do it. I would also be willing to help promote the event. Just let me know if you would like the help. Scribe, I am still waiting to hear from you. Did you get my message? I am taking care of the hunting resources, (aerial photos of the parks, I got Steve Worthman's updated book, past clues and articles, a reliable vehicle, cell phone, etc.) I just hope you got a lantern for christmas, cause I don't have one. Get in touch with me!!! Jakey
Well dang jake, where were you when we needed you last spring? (hehe) Actually, the overall puzzle is designed, but not all the clues have been designed yet, so there's still room for that. I suppose if we get an earlier start on it this year we may fare better. But money did end up becoming a sticking point, and then when it looked like we might need to push it back, there were no dates left available. I think it can work, even if it didn't last year. I just probably need a bit more help.
Good morning, everyone! I don't think we'll have to worry about having no snow this year. If mother nature continues, we'll have just enough to cover the ground. It also seems to never fail that during the hunt it almost always snows. Anyway, the individuals who hide the medallion will make sure it's hidden no matter if there's snow or not. I'm glad they've made the prize $10,000 again this year. Now, if only I can find it as well as a button to register. Have a great day and happy digging thoughts to all.
Hey there Treasure Digger. I received your e-mail about the book. No we have not ordered our copy yet. I don't understand why you can't get a button outside of St. Paul. The gas station where we got ours is in Columbia Heights. Which is not exactly next to St. Paul if you know what I mean.
A friend of mine picked his up in Columbia Heights and the store told him that they had only recieved a limited supply and would not receive any more. He said he got the last pack of 4 buttons. Last year, he purchased mine for me. My hubby called PP this morning and the lady said he'd have to go into the St. Paul area in order to pick any buttons up. He said she wasn't the nicest person so he didn't pursue why the buttons are available outside the area. I live in Apple Valley and no SA or Rainbow Foods carry them nor does the SA in Bloomington by where I work. I'm definitely going to find one. Do you know when the registration deadline is? I'll check back in a little while to see if anyone knows.
The registration deadline is January 27th, which is about midway through the hunt. I have found out that not all SA's and Rainbows carry the buttons. It is the store manager's decision as to whether or not they think they will sell enough of them. I have found the buttons at Rainbow Foods on White Bear Avenue in Maplewood and at the SA on Bellaire and Co. Rd. E in White Bear Lake. That's quite a drive from Apple Valley.
I also agree that whether or not the buttons are available at a particular location is a decision made by the manager of that location, probably based on how sales have gone in the past. Of course any serious hunter WILL find themselves in St. Paul at some point. Perhaps we can even arrange to have some buttons available at a pre-hunt bash?
One general point I'd like to make, although it seems the PP has taken some steps already to resolve it. Whenever anyone makes a post, its always their secret desire to have someone respond to it, to validate their opinion as it were. And this is especially true for the juvenilles and other tactfully handicapped people who tend to try and make their presence felt. When such people make posts, please just ignore them, utterly and completely. To even make a post chastising them, in their mind, is a sign of acknowledgement and only encourages them. In this case, silence is the ultimate revenge on them and they will quickly get bored and go away. Its worked for me in the past and hopefully this year we can maintain a much more enjoyable environment.
Allison, I totally agree with your message #21736. Last year's board contained many, many rude and crude messages. I'm glad to see that Mom has warnings to those who participated in such posts. This year things will be a lot cleaner around here. I have a co-worker who lives in Maple Grove. I'll have to see if he's willing to pick up a button or two for me. Welcome back, CaCoMe!!! Glad to see you were able to get on line. Tell your better half that me and mine will be looking for her out there digging. I still have my badge from last year and I'll be wearing it while I'm digging. CaCoMe, are your modifying your badge with your new name? Take care!
So the fact that 10 large is being put up again...does this mean we should expect to see more rookies and frog-ponders? Which is fine...when all is said and done, I might be joining them.
Does anybody know if the PP has a better server this year than last, and if not would it help if they deleted old postings? I just hate connection timed out coming up all of the time.
Good one scribe, I sent it and it was transferring the data and I let it go to 45% and cancelled, it didn't post and then the same thing happened so I figured the net was really slow and signed off, now later I come on and look like a moron.
I found buttons at the SA in Eagan off of Yankee Doodle Rd. They said they had lots of them. I'm sending off my registration tomorrow. I'm ready for the 23rd.
What is up with this weather? All of the news stations have a different high temp. for this weekend. I don't want this snow to melt. We actually need a lot more. That's what makes it fun. That and makes it more fun and discourages the random passer-by from finding it.
Jett, I agree with your statement. I hope it doesn't warm up to much. What little snow we have it will at least make the hunt more enjoyable to search. If it's just grass/ground/etc, it doesn't make it more easier for us. I mean, I like using my shovel, hoe, rake to look for the medallion. I hope the weather cooperates a little more and add a few more inches to the ground for coverage. About the weather reports on the TV, I always say if you don't like one report just turn the channels until you find one that you like. See, ya.
Treasure Digger, I know what your saying. I always TRY and say to myself I'll believe it when I see it. This happened last year too. It looked as though we would be out just walking about. But Mother Nature provided us with the white stuff. She's just a little behind this year. No matter what happens though, I will be out there, somewhere, after the 11:30 clue comes out. I love going out to dig with the other die hards at 2/3 o'clock in the morning. It's fun to watch and see how many people start showing up at the site as it gets closer to the end. I was at Conway one night, it was dead with the exception of Terry Valentine (if my memory serves me correctly) and a few others. Before and I knew it I would have said I was at the fair.
Just picked up our buttons this evening at Super Americas Lexington and University location. Also purchased the treasure hunter guide - I'm so excited to get out
Do you know how nice it would be for me if the hunt was going on right now. I'm out of school and don't have to worry about sleep, that is going to suck come treasure time.
Come on Regalman. Everyone knows that once the clues start, sleep is an option. Beleive me. It sure comes to that point for me. I am still in college. I think it is one of the few times a year that I drink more coffee then some of the grad students I know. In regards to your digging in the snow just for the feel of it. Oh yes!! Went out and bought a new lantern yesterday because there was a problem with the old one and couldn't wait to fire it up. Just for the feel of the hunt.
The main thing to remember is "Mail in the Registration!!!" Regalman, Green usually stays on the "Shoot the Breeze" board. If I'm thinking of the same person as you are. I should be receving my Treasure Guide soon. Talked to Steve the other night. He's a nice guy and I'm glad he went the extra mile and gathered this information together. Thanks, Steve. I haven't been on the Cooler Crew Medallion website lately. I'll have to check it out this morning. I was pretty happy when I finally found buttons in the southern suburbs (Eagan) that I almost went out digging in my backyard just for the heck of it. During the hunt, I find myself very tired at work and trying to concentrate on anything but where is the medallion. It should be a rule in this area that anyone participating in the hunt should not be made to work and, of course, still get paid for the time off. I don't do much hunting during the night because of kids. Most of my hunting is here on-line with the other parents stuck at home. However, I'd love to be at the park when the 11:30 clue comes out. I've heard it's a blast as who's phone will ring first. It just can't come soon enough.
I fired up the lantern, tested the flashlights, and loaded the shovels in the truck last night. I'm ready to go, but I think we need a little more snow.
Shovels! I forgot the shovels. Just kidding. Got those set up as well, Mr. Med Hunter. I totally agree. We need more snow. A nice 6-8 inches of it. Just enough to have fun but not too much to make it hard to walk. Anybody remember what post board we switched to last year after everyone started showing up just to gather info? You know, the same people that never offered a valid analysis of where they thought the medallion may be and why.
Just a thought... how much more time have y'all spent prepping for this event, as opposed to Y2K? At least Prince hasn't written a crappy song about Winter Carnival (yet).
By the way, Mr. Allison, are you going to try to arrange a warm weather hunt this year?
The hunt starts Jan 23
Glad to see others are excited about the hunt that is soon to come. Went and bought my button last night. Have friends coming out for their first time with me this year. The 23rd huh? I can't wait.
Finally, The Shoveler has returned to the Pioneerplanet!

I'm dreaming of a brown medallion hunt!
Well, here we are again. One year later and we are all starting to gather for our prize. I'm back again and more ready than ever, this year its mine.
Oh come on! It's no fun unless you get to get out there and dig for it. Come on snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm with you Jett! It's no fun if there's not any digging to be done! I can't wait for the Hunt to begin. I'll be priming my decoding skills with past clues to get me back into the swing of things in the few weeks before the hunt begins. Good luck to all!
Sorry, Shoveler, for mispelling your name this afternoon.
And good luch for all of you, Hunters..
Hey all! I'll be wearing my RED and GREEN cap with the Whey2k on it from my mom!!!!
Hey Jakey! Whats up?

Well, just let me know....
I'll be able to still help this year too David. I got sidetracked last year but am ready to rock and roll this year.
Good morning, everyone! I don't think we'll have to worry about having no snow this year. If mother nature continues, we'll have just enough to cover the ground. Hey Treasure Digger the registration deadline was yesterday. . . Hee Hee Hee (Just Kidding). Lots of love, CaCoMe. Formerly Jim The Freight Train.

Come on Duane we all know the medallion will be by the frogpond!
Does anybody know if the PP has a better server this year than last, and if not would it help if they deleted old postings? I just hate connection timed out coming up all of the time.
Apparantly,Regalman the server is twice as good as last year!LOLOLOLOL!

Rainbow Foods on Robert Street between Marie and Wentworth has bottons o'plenty.

I just got my button tonight too at the SA on Lexington and Wheelock. I love their instructions for the Hunt:
1. Send in registration form for your 2000 Winter Carnival button by January 27th, 2000
2. Find the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt Medallion
3. Collect $10,000
Gee, sounds easy enough
Allison Wonderland- I actually made a joke about that too, I love how it says after it all "its that easy"! It cracked me up too.
Does anyone else feel like going and digging in the snow just for the feel of the hunt??? 15 more days
Terry, Where is Green? He hasn't been around here at all. Does he still live here??? Just curious to see why he's not around.
Do you know how nice it would be for me if the hunt was going on right now. I'm out of school and don't have to worry about sleep, that is going to suck come treasure time.

I have 2 hours of school a day and Jan. 24th through Feb.3rd off from work, so i'll be ready to rock and roll. (not that i'm not ready now)
I fired up the lantern, tested the flashlights, and loaded the shovels in the truck last night. I'm ready to go, but I think we need a little more snow.

Has the golden coin been hidden yet? I say we form an organized, 24/7 stake out of all the parks and jump'em when they try to hide it!
