Tim, about $100 for a 'cheap' model. Mine was $89 on sale, but if you think you're going to use it a lot, it'd be better to take a step or two up: $125-150. They're on sale quite often @ Best Buy and COMPusa.
Ian, what good will nite vision googles do? Don't objects have to give off heat, i.e., a humanoid, bee4 you can see them with NVGs? (Or am I reading too many thrillers/murder mysteries?)
If so, only thing they'll be good for is catching me in a deserted park at 3:00 AM, behind some bush... Damn coffee!
Night Vision goggles and other optics are electro-optical devices that intensify (or amplify) existing light instead of relying on a light source of their own. The devices are sensitive to a broad spectrum of light, from visible through infrared. An accessory illuminator can increase the light available at the infrared end of the spectrum by casting a beam of light that is not visible to the human eye. You do not look "through" a Night Vision product, you look at the amplified electronic image on a phosphor screen.
Light enters the Night Vision product through an objective lens and strikes a photo cathode that has a high-energy charge from the power supply. The energy charge accelerates across a vacuum inside the intensifier and strikes a phosphor screen (like a TV screen) where the image is focused. The eyepiece magnifies the image.
A Night Vision phosphor screen is purposefully colored green because the human eye can differentiate more shades of green than other phosphor colors.
Like cameras, Night Vision products have various image magnifications. The distance at which a human-sized figure can be clearly recognized under normal conditions (moon and starlight, with no haze or fog) depends on both the magnifying power of the objective lens and the strength of the image intensifier
Night vision goggles are, in a crude sense, night vision binoculars with a head mask for hands free mobility. However, there are key differences in the optical chambers of night vision binoculars and night vision goggles which separate the two types considerably.
The objective lenses in night vision goggles are designed to maximize the line of sight ahead of the user. In most cases the line of sight, or field of view of night vision goggles, is from 35 to 40 degrees, giving the user the widest field of view of “action†or “image perception†on all sides. In night vision binoculars, the field of view is generally more narrow, from 8 to 15 degrees, where range or depth of view is more important. Generally, field of view, and range of view are mutually exclusive features. In order to maximize the field of view of night vision goggles, the industry standard of magnification is 1.0.
One of the key features in night vision goggles, compared to other night vision devices is the mobility that is offered, keeping the users' hands free for other use.
I ask you what time ittiz and you tell me how to build a watch! LOL!
Really, thanks. I *stink* I've got the drift; at least I unnerstand the gizmos better. They're like light magnifiers, put simply. Which, then, with a flashlite, bet you could see pretty ding-dang good, huh? Because your range of visible light would go farther, like beyond your feet... Sos if The Med's about three yards yust past your left big toe...
yeah for night vision for treasure hunting, the starlight green system would be the way to go, as opposed to the infrared system, which A would cost more, and B, be useless cuz you could be looking right at the medallion and may not see it due to tempenures being the same.
My kids (ages 7 & 9.) gave me the greatest Christmas gift this year...

Here's to good, happy and successful digging!!! This year and all those to folloWWW
I think the neighbors may start to complain to the PP, pushing them to give a clue that narrows it down to at least 1/2 of the park. It needs to be found so I can get on w/ my life.
David Allison - 09:37pm Feb 2, 1998 CST (#5353 of 8457)
I think I have an idea where it is. It seems to me from past clues that there are three kinds of clues. Type one clues are the ones that say something is nearby like a line of of double division or water and woods in the neighborhood. These are things that point to the park, but aren't necessarily in sight. I think Annapolis and Water and Wood St fall in this category. Other clues, type 2 specifically say to look or watch for something. I believe that these are the things you can see from the spot of the medallion's hiding place. I think the capitol dome, the smokestack, the pyramids, and the high ground fall in this category. Thus you have to find a place from which you can see all these things, though you may not necessarily be right on top of them. Finally, type 3 clues which are usually fairly vague-sounding and random actually refer to the specific hiding spot of the medallion or the thing that contains it. I think "Rosebud" is a double meaning like bandana was last year and partly refers to the medallion's container. "Dough" and a "place to play" seem to be significant, yet we are not told they are near or to look for them. Does this tell anybody anything?

I've met two great ladies I've gotten to kind'a know and we're hell bent for next year already!!! Can't wait, all excited, and raring to go!!! We've our "Cooler-Head's-Prevail" name and already are making plans!!! Just based on the great fun we've had this year, in what??? Seems like a lifetime, but only five days!!!!
It's more fun with more than one!!! (I'm really getting tired of rhyme... I was even dreaming in rhyme last nite and about where that damn disk could be buried!!!!) Yea, it would be great to pocket all the money for yourself, but... Really, this whole hunt is more than that. Sorry... (putting soap box WAY away...)

The "Pioner Press Medallion Cooler Club" as we're loosely calling ourselves, has a wealth of emotion and feeling for their commuitiy(ies). A "mother lode" of it, in fact.

Someone asked me while I was searching, "why do you have a GPS?". My response was "So I can PROVE I walked over it again!!!" $4000-$300=$3700...I'm still on the plus side, right? Sheeet, don't tell my wife.

OK this is really a stretch, but I'll toss it out. I studied the literary patterns of the clue writer for this year. Long lines but not very good rhythm or metre. Then I looked at clues from previous hunts and clues with the most similar style are from the 1995 hunt.
You'll see if you look that the styles are very different, suggesting different people and different thought processes.
Possibly the same person wrote the clues, or someone who thinks the same way. And if this is true, maybe we can learn about how this person thinks by studying the 1995 clues?
Like Bill Murray said in Caddyshack, if you want to catch this gopher, you have to get inside its pelt and crawl around for a little bit. You have to think like a gopher... i.e., the clue writer
greenslvs2 - 07:38pm Feb 2, 1998 CST (#5238 of 8457)
Sage: Ditto from this tired old brain. Note there are no people talked about this year as there have been in so many years past. All buildings, structures, objects. I'm of the opinion the folks at the Press are in some saddistic pool - all the writers switch off over the years, think up hiding places/clues... and take bets on us Cooler-junkies as to who's the silliest!!!! I feel like a rat in a glass testing cage!!!! I keep wondering if i'm gonna find my piece of cheese!!!!
Nate: Been thinking the same for about 2.5 days, but didn't want to voice it. Folks are *still* laughing at me about all my "double" stuff, but... at least to me, it's all so obvious!!! Hey, well. You speak it, better be able to put up with the rejounders.
(hi-fiving Jim) Too funny!!!
NewDad: You've totally lost me... What cat? Anyway, zap my "fat mouth man" and e-mail with any questions you got. Will be happy to answer all and discuss showing... *However*... NOT NOW!!!! "I Got A Med On My Mind,"... Great name for a song, think?
Got, it BW... but, like I told Dad... Kind'a ain't got time for anything but that damn disk rite now. I've kept your address (thank you) and will be in touch. Have no idea where that child is!!! She called me at work today, we chewed some ideas and she thought she'd stop by CP on her way home from work. She was thinking she'd get off about 6:00 p.m. I, too, am a bit worried. I wish to 7734 she'd get in touch w/me as I've another double division that goes hand-in-glove w/our telly conver earlier today. I've enuff gray hairs w/o her adding to them!!!! LOL!
Hold your hand up very high and cry VERY loud for "PPMCC" logo wear in the coming years!!! ("Pioneer Press Medallion Cooler Club") OOOOHHHH!!!! 'Nother thought!!!! Pins for winners each year!!! Like that guy that won twice? He'd have two to put on his hat!!! The pins could match the WC Pins!!!! Oh!!! Neat!!!

BW!!!! GREAT IDEA!!! Not only "I've a Well-diggers (referring to it being cold,*usually* when we dig!!!) @ss As I Do The PPMD," or something like that, LOL!!! But bs's for all diggers that "register," like here or something. We can ponder that.
Buttons!!! Yes!!! Buttons!!! Buttons (the sellin of!) could fund the PP prize... Or... the proceeds from the buttons, bumper stickers, hats, other neat junque... ALL THAT could be a new donation to charity... IN ADDITION TO the xtra $1,000 that PP gives the Med winner. A "double" (RISLOLWMP!!) whammy!!! A win-win for everybody!!! And, I'm willing to bet, having gotten to know lots of the "CCC" members... The Diggers would be thrilled (well, the adult majority!!!) to donate proceeds to charity!!!!!!
(That thought is from me feeling bad about someone (me and C????) finding the Med and then Charity not getting it. I feel kind'a crummy for being greedy.....)

How Night Vision Works

Well, NOW'S I really R back. :)
Look under the tree.
Look over there under the tree, Cant imagine what you will see.
Are you up for wintry fun, Will you be the lucky one?
Are you looking near water and woods, Will you find the hidden goods?
Will you search in winters gloom, Where the kiddies choose to zoom?
These questions come to mind, When it is the Hunter I try to find.
She is out in the winters cold, Digging in a park I'm told.
No more time for Im's or mail, Obsessed she is she will NOT fail.
So dig and pick and pick and dig, Dont yank out hair, dont want no wig.
You must call and keep up with clues, while trying desparately to keep dry shoes.
Running noses and frozen toeses, Standing there in your thinking poses.
I hope you find this thing you seek, Your thoughts on where you must not leak.
Look here and there and high and low, Look towards the Pyramids, Damn NO NO NO.
Not there either I see, Look over yonder under that tree.
I hope you find it (Allie)

Like Bill Murray said in Caddyshack, if you want to catch this gopher, you have to get inside its pelt and crawl around for a little bit. You have to think like a gopher... i.e., the clue writer

Oh!!! Neat!!!

Green I can't wait for the three mouseketeers I will have more than one car or less than one husband to take the one car. Has anyone ever come up with a bumper sticker or button that says "I'd rather be hunting (digging)? Sounds like the begining of a money maker. Let me know if there is anything I can help with from The Cathedral Side
