Chasing Amy - 10:58pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#6543 of 8458)
How is this for an idea: Instead of having all of us type in the 11th clue why don't we just, like assign someone or volunteer to put it on. That way the server doesn't get clogged again!
Terry Valentine - 11:12pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#6579 of 8458) Read #8268 from CASEY!!!!!!
We do this because we are gluttons for punishment. The money would be great (2 kids in college) but this gets way beyond money. It's the deciphering, beating the clue writer, meeting new medallion junkies at PP, and never getting a good night's sleep.
Greg Sax - 11:18pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#6594 of 8458)
Early clues.....about 6 or 7 hours of sleep Middle clues.....about 4 or 5 hours of sleep Last couple of clues.....lucky if I can get 3 hours of sleep.
We do this because we like money, we like learning stuff about St. Paul, we like the communal aspect of it all, but most of all because we want to squeeze that little medallion in our hands with a big sigh of accomplishment and the promise of being inscribed in the annals of a wonderful winter tradition.
Greg Sax - 11:55pm Feb 3, 1998 CST (#6645 of 8458) What's going on over at Cherokee right about now is what I call the locust stage. In the crisp quiet of the night, all the shovels, picks, and hoes sound like a plague of locusts moving across a field of white. It's an eerily beautiful sound. Harriet Island had such a nice locust symphony in '96 that I stopped digging just to listen.
greenslvs2: did you know Cheryl before the hunt or did you meet her at the Cooler? Also, I like the idea of separating ourselves from other Water Cooler threads, but PP*M*CC doesn't exactly stick in the mind. I never really liked Water Cooler Crew either though. Other suggestions are encouraged. As soon as this thing is found, we'll have some warm time to think about it for next year. It's great that the white clothing idea took off. Sounds like folks are making friends out at the dig site.

There's really not much more to discuss tonight so I'm going to shut down for the evening. If it's found tonight I just hope they keep the Cooler open a little longer so we can all put out some final thoughts (are you listening, Casey?). Catch you all in the early a.m.
Black Widow - 12:00am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6648 of 8458)
Good night all.. Good luck Green, Cheryl and Hubby oh and don't forget the dog. I would suspect it will go tonight. Hope to hear from you both via E-mail maybe we can get together and plan our stratagies for 1999 the year of the Three Planeteers and "Cooler hand Luke" paraphanalia (probably spelt wrong) We will rule the roost for sure. I'm already making a list of new winter outing clothes i will need for long cold nights outside. I should start on a list of tools as well, since this year it started out easy enough to dig but got tougher with the warm days and cool nights. (picks-rakes-torches) you know what I mean the usual stuff. All Hail Cooler Hand Luke!!!!
Sax, you just gave me goose bumps. Harriet, the night before, 20 some below at 2am. Leaving the truck, we paused to listen to the chorus. It was Dali style, can't be explained in text. You in the beer town again? As the Clash said, "Should I go or should I stay now?"
most of the people are at the main part by the slides It looks like a battle field I mean people are digging trenches to who knows where I I sometimes wonder what goes on inside peoples heads when they pick a spot to dig One guy stood there for about 5 min then said to himself this is where it is trust me then started to dig this went on for a while then he moved to another spot repaeted his ritual and started to dig GOTTA LOVE IT
Live update, from the site: LOTS of people (200+). Concentrated by the Winona Jct of Chip. It's a feeding frenzy! Fun to be out, if you can, get here in the next day-morning would be a VERY good time. It's here, somewhere, along with my left glove and car keys....Again, luck to WC's
Just back from "the site". Looks like some sort of disater rescure or something. Remember, Babe Ruth was left handed and hit many out of the park right feild homers. You can't see the pyramids from home plate. I still like the top of the sledding hill - but it's been dug to oblivion!!!

If you aren't needing some sleep, the sight at the park is other worldly. Looking around, you'd think you were in a coal mine. The Devo song working in a coal mine popped into my head (oops, dating myself). It is almost eerie out there. Hubby and I dug for an hour or so, the going is slow, bring choppers/picks.
doodledog - 01:48am Feb 4, 1998 CST (#6778 of 8458)
Just got back from CP. Although I've been digging for several years I've never been out at night before. "Other worldly" is a good approximation. Acres of lanterns and votives, the muffled "shoop shoop" of a hundred simultaneous diggers, the cold, the warmth of laughter and shouts and hollers, the dogs running between the clustered teams.
I'm not from around here originally (from NY). Tonight I knew I landed in the right place. Passing seemingly normal people on the streets of St Paul, I now know the truth.

We have received RSVPs from three folks so far... Me <g>, Cheryl, and Cheryl has graciously accepted for Hubs, too!!!
So far, we've two Coleman stoves... I'll be glad to share mine!! Bring whatever you want to nosh on for breakfast. I'm doing the Cooler Coffee/eggs/bacon/steak/hashbrowns thing - gotta have HASHBROWNS at a re-hash!!!! Cheryl wants do-nuts.... ISH!!!!!
Attire is the usual - Cooler stuff/white.
Cooler Heads Unite!!! Be There Or Be Square to share stories, rehash your experiences, etc!!!! Can't wait to meet everybody!!! It's gonna be a blast!!!
Gotta run!!! Gotta go check the park. Stay tuned for more details on the First Annual PPMCC Breakfast Re-Hash!!!!
:)
Black Widow - if you want to come (Sunday), let me know - I'll come and pick you up!!!! Will also pick you up for tonite if The Med is not found today!!!!!!!!

Besides, a cook-out is more in the spirit of the hunt that we Cooler HeadS have just finished - it all began and ended at CP, and that's where we need to meet.
A new tradition!!! Every year after the hunt, that Sunday we return to the Med hunt location to cry, laugh, curse... tell tall tales maybe, get reaquainted with old Heads, welcome the new Heads.
COOLER HEADS WILL PREVAIL!!!! HAIL COOLER HAND LUKE!!!

We where standing ten feet from those two when they found it today!! I saw the guy walking from a tree and counting steps! we just missed it!! :o( next year we will get that darn thing. This was our first year at the cooler, man what a rush to see so many people discussing the clues and the creative ways people found to decifer them. good luck next year to all and to the winners congrats!
greenslvs2 - 06:35pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7333 of 8458)
Re: The Bash - bring all your own stuff... I'm trying to figure out how we can have/make coffee for everyone, but not able to think of a way. Guess I've gone brain-dead from those damn clues!!!
If you wish to bring xtra of something or a dish/salad/or something to share - that is up to you. Somebody's bringing xtra stakes, I think Matt. I'm thinking about brining a salad of some kind to share in addition to what I bring for myself.
We'll have the grills at CP, plus me and Cheryl are bringing our Coleman stoves in case they're needed.
Wayne Rust - 07:08pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7361 of 8458)
WHAT WOULD BE REALLY NICE IS IF THE PP WOULD MAKE A TEXT FILE OF ALL THESE MESSAGES, GOOD AND BAD, AND MAKE IT AVAILABLE. THIS IS A LOT OF DIALOGUE, REALLY HUGE. JUST MAYBE IT WOULD MAKE FOR INTERESTING READING, FROM BEGINNING TO END. A LOT OF "CHARACTERS" CONTRIBUTED.
greenslvs2 - 07:15pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7364 of 8458)
Wayne, I was thinking that. What if there was a web page just for all the stuff Greg Sax told us to go hither and yon to get, What's-his-name's daily diaries, the log of the past week, etc.???? Instead of copying it to Word - which made my stuff come out usless! - we could just download the file.
Black Widow - 07:16pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7365 of 8458)
Hey Green I finally finished reading the days back log. Sunday sounds like a great idea. I'll probably have to come a little later since Sunday is the day we shop for my mother-in-law she doesn't drive. I like the idea of the pre-hunt bash as well. Don't forget ALL 1999 is the year of the THREE PLANETEERS!!!!! All Hail Cooler Hand Luke!! If you and Cheryl could E-mail me on Sunday before you leave let me know what you will be wearing that would be great.
Ian - 07:21pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7369 of 8458) READ MESSAGE 8268
I was thinking that I could make a list of people's screen names and e-mail, to keep in touch.
greenslvs2 - 07:28pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7372 of 8458)
I thought of that, was going to take on the job... but we *really* don't know any of us and it would be SO DAMN EASY for some jerk to send a virus.... That scares me.
Tho, if you wanna do that and *also* somehow convince me you're legit and I don't have to worry... Well, me and BW and C could put the stuff together, send it to you and you could send it to every one... But *maybe not* Joe Medallion????????
greenslvs2 - 08:02pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7393 of 8458)
All PPMCC Members... I've just had my heart touched by an angel...
You know that we HAD to have caused the PP a bunch a probs with our enjoyment and fun of this particular Cooler, what with clogging up the server constantly, etc... And you KNOW what a dear Casey was to us - always honest, rite there when we needed him, always cheerful, willing to help and soothe our feathers when we got riled by something/someone...
So, I privately invited him to The First Annual PPMCC Re-Hash Bash. Well, like, if he's not a member with all he's done/did for us... Then none of us are members!!!
This is what Casey replied:
"greenslvs2,
Thanks for the invite. I'm sure my ability to attend will depend entirely on my ability to recover from my Saturday night poker game.
Anyway, the massive participation in the Water Cooler has been quite the buzz around the PP. And if I can't come, please extend my thanks to the PPWCC for a fun and lively discussion board.
Cheers,
Casey Trauer Planet night editor"
Nice guy, Casey. Let's all hope he makes it Sunday!!!!
Thought my fellow members would be proud - wanted to forward it on to you.
greenslvs2 - 08:34pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7411 of 8458)
BUMMER!!!, Ian. Work on that list for moi, will you???
Hay all! I know I was kind'a obtuse about the clues, but here's an idea....
All this DOESN'T have to end!!! NOPE, NADA, ZIPPO!!! Don't gotta end!!! We can keep going!!! Why? Because there's other WC topics!!! Yup!!!
Not like we're gonna all want to go to the same ones at the same time or even to the xtent we did our dear Med one... But... we can meet and talk and LEARN and CHALLENGE EACH OTHER and SHARE OPINIONS and DISCUSS and TALK.... Because the Med maybe gone, but The COOLER lives on!!!!
The PP is always having a WC about ANYTHING!!!! Like when Dave Moore passed away... I even thought of going in there, but... well... didn't understand about the WC's and all that..
But now I DO!!!! Now, I'll feel more like going into the other ones and meeting people and sharing ideas... and in some of them we may run across each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is so strangely funny. Planning post hunt events. Who would have thought a week ago, we'd all be trying to picnic in the middle of the winter in a park that looks like it's been trashed.
greenslvs2 - 09:28pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7456 of 8458)
What's so funny about a post hunt event? Or strange, I should say? War veterans get together to relive what they've been thru. Validates it for them.
This will solidify (ice?) our shared experience. Plus, we're starting a NEW TRADITION!!! A picnic in the middle of winter!!!! It beats jumping into a lake and freezing your Medallions off!!!
Just think!!! You'll be able to tell your grandkids, etc., that you began this!!!!

This was our first year at the cooler, man what a rush to see so many people discussing the clues and the creative ways people found to decifer them. good luck next year to all and to the winners congrats!

If you've any ideas, let's hear them!!!

Wayne, I was thinking that. What if there was a web page just for all the stuff Greg Sax told us to go hither and yon to get, What's-his-name's daily diaries, the log of the past week, etc.???? Instead of copying it to Word - which made my stuff come out usless! - we could just download the file.
I wonder if Greg would/could do Web page????

Hey Green I finally finished reading the days back log. Sunday sounds like a great idea. I'll probably have to come a little later since Sunday is the day we shop for my mother-in-law she doesn't drive. I like the idea of the pre-hunt bash as well. Don't forget ALL 1999 is the year of the THREE PLANETEERS!!!!! All Hail Cooler Hand Luke!! If you and Cheryl could E-mail me on Sunday before you leave let me know what you will be wearing that would be great.
JOE !!!!!!!!!!!

I was thinking that I could make a list of people's screen names and e-mail, to keep in touch.

Green

COOL!!!! IT DOESN'T HAVE TO END!!! Neat!
