Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

Are we only to post comments limited to the above standard here?
I don't think we'd have any more posts, if this was the case. lol Nothing worth reading, anyhow.
"This is a free public forum. Contrary to popular belief, freedom of speech does not exist here."
Actually you're right. On a privately hosted entity such as this, they can impose whatever standards they like and as users it's our decision as to whether we like the environment here or not. But the difference I'm getting at is that there are rules laid out. I see them everytime I log in. I may have to go back and look at them but I don't think they forbid sexual comments, especially those not of an explicit nature. I'd rather be booted for having broken rules I should have known about than stay and be constantly worried about breaking rules I don't know about.
"You may be removed at any time and for whatever reason the Sysop sees fit."
True. I guess it's just a gamble then as to whether or not you believe the Sysop will remove you for telling a dirty joke or making comments about someone's underwear. Personally I'm operating under the assumption that the Sysop is a reasonable person and would boot people only for breaking the stated rules and not on their own whim.
"Do you think Ma Press wants to be known for their "Medallion thread", where grade school humor runs rampant?"
Is that anything like the Twins thread where Medallion talk runs rampant?
But let me tell you a little story to illustrate my point. I used to volunteer at Como Zoo and one of the things I did was make up the display cases where they advertise their upcoming events. One time I made the letters in the case out of pipe cleaners and the director of the CZS made the comment to one of the people under him that he didn't really like it as he thought it looked a bit grade-schoolish. And he wasn't really wrong, it kind of did. I thought they looked OK, he didn't, and that was fine. He was in charge and I changed them.
So a then a couple of months later I'm working on another one and I have it all done and the people who work under the director were all standing around looking at it, trying to decide if it looked too grade-schoolish. There were a lot of things in there I had made myself and they were all starting to naysay it. Now before that comment had been made, they loved everything I did. But now they were trying to guess at what someone else's standards were and convinced themselves this new display didn't measure up to it. They were just about to have me take it down when the director happened to walk by and they asked him what he thought. He said, "Looks fine to me." And it stayed.
So if the PP wants to impose some standards of content, I don't have a problem with that. That's their right. What worries me is when people start interpreting those standards on behalf of others and up drawing the line much further over than it really is because they are so worried about crossing it.
Ideally what I would like to see is everyone feeling like they can be themselves and not have to second guess everything they say and go back and delete things they've written. If someone does cross a line, that can be pointed out to them. I just don't want to see everyone with their backs pressed up against the wall because they don't want to cross a line where they're not even really sure where it is. Those situations usually lead to bad things.
Within the framwork of the rules set up by the PP, it's basically a democracy as to what standard prevails. If 90 people want a PG rating and 10 want a G rating, I don't know that the 90 should have to censor themselves to keep the other 10 happy. If the other 10 doesn't like what they read, they could go elsewhere or even try to influence the topic away to other subjects instead.
I guess what bothered me about the whole thing was that people were having fun, and then felt like they had done something bad. I don't think anyone did anything bad or needs to feel guilty. There are some people here who don't want to read such things and that's their right. But if you're going to modera
Hey what do you know? There is a length limit on posts!
To finish that last thought:

There are some people here who don't want to read such things and that's their right. But if you're going to moderate what you say because of those people, I think it should be because you've decided on your own to do so out of respect for them and not because you're afraid of breaking some murky, unpublished rule and need to feel guilty about what you've done.

I agree with you 100% Allison. But, I would hate to see that 10% you refer to leave. So, I think we can infer and joke all we want, and be off color, ect. I don't feel bad or guilty about anything said previously, and I haven't personally deleted any posts.
However, I myself am going to try to tone it down a bit. Not a lot. And, this is just my opinion. I'm putting it out there for discussion purposes. For the record, nobody has offended me yet, and I doubt you will in the future. If so, I'll let you know.
I don't know if I've posted this link, but I just ran across it again yesterday. It's an interview with the narrator of "Legend of the St. Paul Winter Carnival".
...I think it should be because you've decided on your own to do so out of respect for them and not because you're afraid of breaking some murky, unpublished rule and need to feel guilty about what you've done.
speaking of Veggie Tails and the cucumber in the closet-I figured out last night how it got there
--I asked the kids about it (they laughed and said it had been here since Christmas)we backstepped and then I remembered it got sent home with other leftover food from grandmas and just happened to be in a box of toys that got brought upstairs (?)somehow got thrown into the closet with toys (you know how kids clean there room) ::sigh::
I don't think I've said anything offensive either, though that's part of it, not really being sure. There are a lot of aspects to my life that people here don't know about and I don't discuss here because it's simply not the forum for it. But I do that out of my own free will because like you, I don't want to upset that 10% purposely. But on the other hand, I think those who are very sensitive also need to realize that not everyone else has the same standards that they do and they can't always expect people to change for them. So in the end, like most things, it's about compromise.
I agree with AW to an extent I do beleive that the conversation on "meat day" did go maybe a little too far but once "censorship" started it was almost like everyone was afraid to say anything for fear it would be taken the wrong way....hey we managed to get through the previous week with out censoring we just didn't go to far. I think we can be ourselves just not overly induendoish...if that makes sense.
And I never said I was good at speeches thats AW's line of work but I think I made my point here too
Ok, so it seems that point is settled now and the wave has been dampened in both directions. Now back to your regularly scheduled discussions of great social, scientific, and cultural import...
HI AW!!! How does it feel to be quoted? usually you have to be dead for that!

I have been here for three years all year long and not in this board alone. I don't have a problem with a little off color humor but there is a line. The political boards have had this situation arise many times and it's been a shame to see how bad it can get. The difference between us and the political boards is that we are a real live group that people do take the time to read and come and see during the Winter Carnival(which is a family event).Inneuendo is not a problem but flat out posts of any offensive nature is.After all isn't that what the legend of Joe Medallion and Mr.news is all about?

like I think I said last night (or was I just thinking about it?) anyways I think we all need to pick a park scope it out for 3-4 days prior to the hunt starting and catch the medallion dropper when he/she is dropping it then we know where its at!!

several peeps were actually gonna go build tree houses in the parks and camp out there before the hunt started! lol!
Why don't we create our own medallions, about 100, and drop them in parks all over Ramsey County? That way, the true finder will have to really read the clues to know if it's THE medallion.
Let me see, today is the 1st. I'll start it on a Sunday. I think it looks like I'll probably be starting it on the 17th assuming I get everything done this weekend I need to get done. (It does take at least a little while to write the clues!)
As for donating stuff for prizes, that would be fine with me. Although people say they do it just for the hunt of it, and I'm sure for some people it is true, I still think a bigger prize makes for a more fun hunt, both in terms of motivation and in terms of how many people you are competing against.
That is because I convinced a few folks NOT to e-mail SYSOP and hoped that we could figure this out for ourselves.
BTW: Something I need to say here, for the folks that contacted me I really wish you would be honest enough to speak out. Minnesota nice.....just another way to hide under the bed of life.

If we can talk about a variety of interesting subjects, that appeal to all types, we can hopefully continue this thread year round.
