2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

King Boreas aka Ian

I may be able to come up with a 'treasure chest'.

So AW, you are gonna sneak out of the parade to go hide, uh, whatever it is your hiding?

he should wait until the day he wants it found to go hide it :)

I have thought about an entry fee, though I couldn't really think of any good way to collect it. And I wanted people to feel as though they could participate without having to cough up money. The last two years I donated a prize. Come to think of it, Mr Med Hunter won the first year and still hasn't collected his prize (a Monopoly game). Last year Me2 won it and got to go to St. Paul Saints game with me as well as keep the chest it was found in. This year, unless people want to start donating prizes to make it more exciting, I'll probably just find something to offer as a prize that likely would be worth around $20.

Me2, here's my plan. Whenever a door is opened, I'm going to post SIFS, which means "Saving It For Saturday." Because we are twins separated at birth, you'll know what I'm thinking! ;-)

ALLISON IF YOU DONATE SOMETHING CAN YOU STILL PARTICIPATE IN THE HUNT? SOME PEOPLE MIGHT THINK ITS RIGGED IF A DONOR FINDS IT

Dal-yah, I caught Ians too ;) I'll take the first SIFS! hehe

Hey Allison, you could setup a PayPal account to collect the fee.

Morning everyone.

Dal, I just didn't want to get SYSOP involved,I figured we were all adult enough to understand and handle it all by ourselves. Not really sure next time if I will be the one to say anything.Next time I'll just let the chips fall where they may.

yeah but if he collects a fee, don't the rules he has to abide by become a little more sticky?

If you have a treasure chest Ian, that would be cool with Me2's daughter as then she wouldn't have to give hers up. Although with as little snow as we have this year, I'm thinking something Medallion sized might be easier to hide than a chest.

Ares, not sure - maybe if it is a donation there wouldn't be a problem.

If you donate something, you can still participate. I don't think anyone is interested in a rigged hunt, so having said that, hopefully no one will think that I would bother to rig it just to get a donated prize back to the person who gave it up in the first place. And if we have multiple donors, only one could win anyway.

The human race is faced with a cruel choice: work or daytime television.

where's the choice??? in my experience daytime tv sucks. of course we creat our own right here, but thats a different story.

and scribe, thanks for the reality check :)

hypothetical...If he collects a fee than will he have to claim it on taxes next year?

Oh, man! did I start a controversy with that joke? I feel terrible, and wonder just how many of you were offended. If I should delete that, I don't know how to.;( Maybe I should soak my head in a barrel of herring as penance.

Unless it turns into a large event with a lot of money being exchanged, I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

I do think if you have an entry fee, it might make things more sticky. I'd probably need a lot more official rules and disclaimers and such. Might be more work than it's worth. But a voluntary donation to a prize fund might be workable. The motivation being that the bigger the prize, the higher the competition level is likely to be, so in a sense you'd be paying for competition.

depends on how much of it goes for the prize, i'd imagine.

Technically, you must report any prize money as income, regardless of the source.

My Dalliance

And, even if the prize is not money, you have to report the fair market value of the item.

technically. yada yada. :) anyone ever go down to the casino, sit down at the blackjack table, drop a couple of bills down, and walk out with more than you went in with?

If I collected money, it would be income. If I give it all away as a prize, it would be a write-off. So in the end it's just a wash and not something to worry about.

What if he donated the prize to the winner? Wouldn't it then fall under the $5000 non-taxable gift giving rule?

of course the other thing to remember, is that they didn't get al capone on murder, or robbery or anything else violent. anyone know what they did get him on?

So we ALL need to donate a total up to $4999 to this hunt--COOL!

I suspect if anyone does donate to the prize fund, it won't be over $100 anyway and would be unlikely to even affect anyone's tax bracket.

Technically, the irs would prefer you report the pennies you pick up in parking lots, the income you get when you sell old cds to Know name, and if you play rock, paper scissors, and win a buck. That way we are taxed fairly;)

I understand Medallionator. I'm just thinking if I make it clear ahead of time that I have no interest in running a rigged hunt, maybe they wouldn't think that later.

As for the previous two hunts, I suspect there were less than 20 people who got involved. Possibly less than a dozen who actively did it. Scribe didn't even do it and the thing was in Linwood! :-P
