2008 St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion

Clue #1 You've joined the hunt for the regal runt
To prove searching does pay
Don't dig a hole or knock down a pole
And the golf course is out of play

Last year Jake took home the cake
With a clue a bit off level
This year we'll rinse off all our prints
Lest this hunt go to the devil

Clue #2 The point of all this is so that you won't miss
Your big chance to grab all the cash
Now gather your guys and a gal who is wise
You'll have to do something quite rash

Clue #3 We've scanned the county to hide our bounty
And keep you on your toes
It may sound risible, but our puck's invisible
Although it might just stick to your nose.

Clue #4 How fun is the snow how far will we go
You really ought to go see
Get up for the mission and not just the wishin'
Get into the game-it's all free

Clue #5 There once was a clue that drove you-know-who
To threaten a heinous act
We'd use it again but we're afraid of his pen
My friend, that's an unfortunate fact

Clue #6 All ye who look should honor the book
As one who stood for hope
Much was built in the name of the kilt
Look sharp now and never mope

Clue #7 If you should go look high then low
One could see it from a bower
If it's your bent you might seek a tent
To protect in case of shower

Take note of the wood and do what you should
To extract the prize for yourself
Build a bridge to your dreams as high as they seem
Leave nothing behind on the shelf

Clue #8 Look at the buck to acquire good luck
In finding the grail this year
Link a jar,a line, a star lawyer divine
While crying in your beer

He won, then lost and the nation was tossed
Into strife that was far from civil
The point I'm making is yours for the taking
Believe me - not the message board drivel

Clue #9 This name brings tears, elation and cheers
And occasionally even outrages
It sits on walls and rides the halls
And fills a dozen pages

The hills are alive and you'll have arrived
Refrain from the very injurious
Be bold and be brave but your skin you must save
What's off-limits should frankly be obvious

Clue #10 Look for the sight you hope is just right
You're doubtful and you're torn
Make the rounds for what rhymes with grounds
And part of a rose with a horn

Through flames and flow this park where you'll go
Is the site of sacred relics
Stay away from these and the cliffs if you please
Or you'll be in a heckuva fix

Clue #11 Air and river sounds lead all to Mounds
Far from the graves take your entourage
Twixt Burns and Thorn, an icy pathway is born
Across Mounds from a gray house and tan garage

Hell no fury hath as those on the wrong path
Mounds and Warner form a woodsy perimeter
The path not official contains footprints beneficial
Some 300 trudges in - quest for a quitter

This trail you must follow goes down a narrow hollow
Under a fallen tree to an old rusted drum
From here you must search for a hillside path perch
Wherein lies the center of fun

The fetching is the Aby in him. Abyssinians (Aybssinina is now Ethiopia) were used to retreive small birds for the hunters.

I have to agree with TMK. I don't think the intention of this clue is to point us to Como. If anything it's a red herring. The CW is simply saying he'd like to use the same clue again, not that he(or she) hid the medallion in the same park as the year he pissied off Soucheray.

Also, I think it's somewhat clear that it's 2003, clue 5 that is being refferenced. It's the only clue which Joe reprinted in its entirety in his article.

So, the question is: Given the meaning we were already given in 2003 for this clue, what else could it mean?

Treasure hunt lifer, prepare to cipher.

This one's yours to keep.

Was it two or three, they seem not to agree

When St. Paul made a great leap.

Exactly. What I was wondering is how the heck were people fitting that clue to Harriet Island?

1862 (Leap Year) Saint Paul 'leapt' across the river and took part of Dakota County and thus that part became Ramsey County. While they got the county in 1862 they didn't get the actual park, or it didn't become an park until, in 1903.

Oh. Forgot to say, "CHAIR-O-KEY."

I still want to know what that last line means. That break between "My friend" and "that's an unfortunate fact" is put there for a reason. anagrams have got me nothing. Is that a line from a movie?

but phelan threatened to do bodily harm to Vital Geurin when he got out of jail for inhabiting his land / the judge heard the case and let Geurin keep it.

That is my heinous act thought

stocks:

a. a former instrument of punishment consisting of a framework with holes for securing the ankles and, sometimes, the wrists, used to expose an offender to public derision. Compare pillory (def. 1).

b. a frame in which a horse or other animal is secured in a standing position for shoeing or for a veterinary operation.

c. the frame on which a boat rests while under construction.

hmmm

From that year:

there were some noodles about cherokee

something about st. paul acquiring the west side in 1902

st. paul becoming electrified

"Had a silly brainstorm on the way home tonight. I was trying to follow the KISS rules with clue #5. Took it down to the basics. Cipher, as a verb, mean to compute arithmetically. Added the numbers given us, One plus two plus three....six. There are 6 mounds in Mounds park. Bear with me - I know I'm probably W-A-Y wrong, but a lot of the other clues fit there, too. Of course, you can see the Capitol, barbs - Thorn street, clue #3 I haven't been able to make a lot of sense out of....but there is a sort of pavillion that's open on two sides. The coldest star.....this is the BIG stretch....the beacon??"

"I was driving home, thinking about 1, 2, and 3- and around wyoming it hit me- the Flashing Red One downtown! Its almost traditional to use the big 1, and I believe its been debated during past hunts as to whether it has 2 or 3 sides. The rest would be just to get us over-analyzing."

this very sweet quote from scribe "I also met a hunter named Bernie. He has been hunting since the fifties. In 1958 there was a clue about a plug nickel and that was when the med was in a treasure chest. Bernie was just 17 and sat down on a log to take a break from digging. A man walked up to him and said "Son, would you mind standing up for a minute?" Bernie stood up and the man picked up the log he was sittin on and shook it, sure enough it was hollowed out and had a plug at the end!"

Something else, it was the High Bridge that connected Chair-O-Key and Irvine Parks. Or thus sayeth my source.

And I still don't know why folks don't like my naval mission with the USS Hope, et al.

I think that's the best thing I've come up with that's not going against Oscar's Razor.

Green, I think the sledding hill at Cherokee goes right onto what was or still is the baseball field (baseball game). Its just a little informal field - not sure if any organized teams even play there. Its the kind of place neighborhood kids could go in the winter to slide, and in the summer to play baseball - both free.

could an UNFORTUNATE act be a BAD part or ACT in a play that was criticized??? i.e robinhood or any other play that would tie into the phalen names - hence the earl question?

Here is my lame noodle for Phalen

The most recent clue references two children's books (Harry Potter and Series of Unfortunate Events). It makes me think about that story (book shaped thing) monument/garden/bench on the south side of the lake.

Here is a link to the book bench picture:

Apparently the area is called Poetry Park

"The Phalen Poetry Park is an urban park where the community can celebrate the language arts with poetry posted on the PoetsÂ’ Post. Next to the post, Marimba Benches welcome your tired bones or your joyful playing. A walkway of words etched in stone to inspire the poet within circle the post and lead to the Dragon Garden. Relax on the giant Book Benches and marvel at the surrounding beauty. Located at the south end Phalen Regional Park. Parking is available at Phalen Recreation Center 1000 E Wheelock Parkway St. Paul, MN (1/2 mile east of Wheelock Parkway and HWY 61 intersection)."

Is this clue just a little too obvious? When I read the clue last night, my immediate thoughts were Como... but it just doesn't seem right to me now that I've been pondering it for hours on end... The CW knows that we'd immediately make the connection to Soucheray and his piece in 2003 about the Como clues... if you look at the last line, "My friend, that's an unfortunate fact"... it looks like it's saying we will not be fortunate if we follow that fact to Como... So now at this point, it leaves me with two parks, the first obviously being Phalen since the first four clues fit so well. Can this clue really be interpreted to mean Edward Phalen, the alleged murderer who Phalen Park is named after? Or is there more of a connection to Cherokee in this clue? With the "you-know-who" reference, my wife's initial thought was Harry Potter / Voldemort, and there is a Morton St. leading to Cherokee, but it's not a very puck-friendly portion of the park... Is there another connection that could be made to Cherokee?

Honestly, in my mind it could be any of these right now...

Finally just caught up on the posts. I want it to be phalen, but with the last clue, I just dont know how it can be. They are definatly talking about Joe S. His griping and his writing about that como clue. Baseically saying, oh we would use that clue to tell you como again, but he got to upset about it. it cant mean phalen and the murder, because the clue says there once was a clue? Como, ohh I hate como. Its to big and didnt someone say there was construction going on there some kind of pipe laying. I am so drained and I havnt even hunted yet, drove through Phalen on tuesday, saw one car and never got out myself. I am going tonight and my favorite park as much as I hate to say it is cono followed by phalen because I love that park and it seem to fit the clues so well before todays. Anyone been out to como? Is there alot of people out there
