the first job i worked at.... I was like 14 or 15 - was at K.C. Doggy Salon, which was on Arcade St. right by Johnson Highschool...
the lady that ran the place, used to do that all the time... we'd have people bring in older dogs, and usually we wouldnt charge them.... just because they were usually so nice, and it felt good to make the dogs feel clean and happy
I started working there by sheer luck.... that was right when we had Maynard - a Golden Retriever that we got from my uncle - they had just had a baby, and didnt want his allergies to the dog to be a problem....
he was a big ol' boy...
but yeah.. we went in there one day to get him groomed, and the Kathy (the owner), says: "he's a pretty big dog!... I dont know if I can lift him into the tub! can you do it for me?"...
I did it, and she talked me into working there.... so I could lift dogs into the tubs and wash them....
eventually i got trained in to help cut hair and everything.... was a really fun experience/place to work.
That is really cool, Nick. There is a special bond with dogs when you get to help them get clean and feel good, and they really trust you to keep them safe. I know Frodo seems so proud and happy when he gets done at the groomer.
What a neat job experience for you!
I used to think it was an icky job, cuz I knew someone who was a groomer, and all she used to talk about was dealing with their anal glands!
But its really fun to give a dog a bath, with the right help and equipment.
Here's Ali, Whitney, Representative Joe Atkins, Mayor George Tourville and another judge posing with Stoli who would turn out to be the pet show's first place winner in the Unusual Markings category.
I took Frodo to the groomer this morning and she wouldn't accept any payment.
Then I took Frodo to the vet this afternoon and they gave me a big discount on the lab work and didn't charge me for the office visit.
And the vet bill for his 3-day hospital stay was only $83, including all the meds and IVs.
But most of all, I am feeling very, very lucky to have another chance to spend more time with him. We've gone to the beach four days in a row and he's up to walking about four or five blocks now.
Carolyns mom got her, when she was just 6 weeks old, but recently her allergies caught up with her, and we're taking Molly into our house...
Bucky and Azreal seem to be okay with it so far.... but it is late, and they are tired... so we'll see what tomorrow brings...
on a side note, her mom ended up getting a really cute little 1 year old Chihuahua, from some friends, out of it all, though.... we're thinking the allergies wont be affected as much from that one..... fingers crossed.
Just thought Id put my two cents in about the wrinkly monster. She's got potential to be a good dog, she just needs disipline.
She slept through the whole night right next to me though, so thats good. She also scavanged for shoes early this morning and brought me my slippers and one of my fav shoes.
She's really really hyper, as most puppies/pugs are, but moreso now that she has new territory to explore.
Another funny note... Molly was playing with some of Bucky's toys, and Buck was getting a little irritated, and he walked over to her and took the sqeaker out of her mouth, so Molly got a new one, and Bucky did the same thing. It was good seeing them interact, though Bucky wasn't too happy he was getting his sqeakers taken from him.
I'd like to get one of the two dogs, and my cat - Azreal, together, but the cat doesnt like the idea so far.
He gives me this look, like: "okay, i've played your little camera game with the one dog, for a couple of years now....it aint gonna work with two of them"
Please keep Frodo in your thoughts and prayers. Seems like something is just not right in his little world right now. I will be taking him in to see the vet in the morning; sooner if he gets to being distressed. He's got such a delicate balance going on with his metabolism - I hope we can get him back to feeling good again real soon. He will be 14 in January, so I know that one of these times we will be having to say goodbye. Meanwhile I cherish each day, and each walk on the beach with him. We didn't go to the beach today - he just didn't seem to feel up to it.
Our daughter is out in San Diego. She is currently safe - but please keep her in your prayers.
They have cancelled classes at the college she works at and attends. Some of the staff are in evacuation areas and at least one of them, they believe, is losing or has lost their home.
Frodo has a large mass on his spleen. Things have not been quite right in his little world for several days, so I took him to the vet today, with what I thought would turn out to be urinary obstruction again.
Since there is a greater than 50% chance that the splenic mass is benign, he will have surgery this week, probably Wednesday or Thursday.
If cancer is hugely evident at surgery, we won't wake him up.
If everything looks ok, but biopsy comes back as cancer, it is usually an aggressive cancer that causes this, and we would then set a date, as we did with Reba, for going to the Rainbow Bridge.
We are going to the beach tomorrow, and will listen to Da Yooper's jazz CDs and Drummer's marimba CD every chance we get, and go to every fast food drive-thru that gives out dog treats - he gets very, very happy when we go through a drive-thru cuz he KNOWS. And we'll stop off for a couple fortune cookies - those are his favorite.
And we'll hope that we get to do it all that fun stuff again in a week or so, when he's feeling better.
Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
I've been watching too, Terry. Scarey stuff and the fires move so fast. My niece was evacuated from her house in Del Mar this evening. A precaution I'm hoping.
I hope things work out positive for you Eags. :frown:
I also hope the fires don't destroy anything on your ends OT & TV. How's the forcast out there? It's late October afterall and it could downpour at any time.
Frodo was breathing so fast all night - he has not been really comfortable in several days and now that I know the cause - how large that mass is and is pressing on his other internal organs and structures, I knew we had to do this surgery as soon as possible.
As much as I would have liked to have today with him "just in case" I couldn't watch him have so much un-ease for another day, if it could be helped.
I called the vet this morning when they opened and asked if they still had room for him today. And they did. I took him right over there.
I should know something after 1PM today.
I told Frodo we're going to get him feeling better.
Dr. Hunt is going into this with hope, and I will hold on to that today.
Brenda was in contact with my Mom this morning. She is still safe. The school she attends and works at is closed today. They have been told to stay indoors because of the air quality. She is as ready as possible in case they need to evacuate.
Some of the staff members that live further north have lost their homes and had evacuated quickly with little more than the clothes on their back.
Eags - Positive thoughts that Frodo comes through this okay.
sooo glad to hear he's out of surgery - good luck with the tests
I lost my Taiga to a large mass pressing on her lungs- kept getting bigger and bigger til she could hardly breathe - we had her put to sleep because of it -- I hope you don't have to go through anything like we did.
Frodo is home!! He is doing very well. We won't have pathology results back until next week. Frodo has had his dinner and is now sleeping comfortably. Counting down the days (seven) until we can go to the beach again.
Thanks CM. I know I'll be sleeping much better tonight than I have been. We were ready to get an airline ticket for her out of there until this was over. The airport out there is right off the ocean and would be safe the longest.
And because I have been sleep deprived most of this week with worry, I'm going to hit the sheets.
Thanks y'all, for your thoughts and prayers and nice comments!
We have had a good evening here. Frodo has been just sacked out most of the time, which is great to see how relaxed and comfortable he is.
And I realized this evening - he has been "flinching" for quite a long time, and we thought it was from his calcium imbalance; however, he is not flinching anymore, so now I am thinking he has been in PAIN all this time. I am so, so glad he is feeling this much better!
Things took a turn for the worse overnight. Two trips to the vet this morning, with a worrisome overall picture, but no obvious problem found. The second visit, when he indicated he wanted to go outside, we took him out - the vet, the tech, and I. He was actively standing on the grass, watching cars go by when he collapsed and was gone - just that fast. He chose the time, and that is a comfort. I got to be with him the whole time, and he didn't seem like he was scared or suffering at the moment he died.
Thanks for everyone's support and prayers through all this.
Oh, I'm so sorry Eags. But you did what you could and at least he was comfortable the past day or so after he had the tumor removed. What a wonderful way to go though. And you didn't have to make that tough decision yourself. :frown:

enjoy
has the Golden Retriever personality...

I should be sleeping. Instead I'm worrying. Nothing to do about it, but I can't seem to get involved in anything long enough to turn it off.
I'll be glad when those fires out there are under control and we know that daughter of ours is safe.
I also hope the fires don't destroy anything on your ends OT & TV. How's the forcast out there? It's late October afterall and it could downpour at any time.
Hope those fires stay away from everyones loved ones. They are scary.
As much as I would have liked to have today with him "just in case" I couldn't watch him have so much un-ease for another day, if it could be helped.

Pathology testing on the spleen will tell the rest of the tale, but for now, this is encouraging news.
Thanks for all your prayers and good thoughts, but please keep 'em coming!

sad face insert here :frown:
Terry - wow - hope it rains hard in CA soon!
Things are some better in San Diego. The belief is now that where Brenda is living, there won't be a need for evacuation.
The worry meter has dropped considerably today.
And because I have been sleep deprived most of this week with worry, I'm going to hit the sheets.
Goodnight and SCDs!
so glad your babys home and feeling better eags
