Brenda has been checking in with us or my Mom several times a day this week. The danger of being evacuated has about disappeared, but the air quality is terrible. She is trying to stay indoors as much as possible and not breathing very deep when she needs to be outside.
Thank you all for your words of sympathy and comfort.
I wish I could say that Frodo didn't suffer today. He had a pretty rough time of it all morning, in fact from about 4:30AM on. I am glad he seemed calm and interested in his surroundings just before he died, though cuz that really helps. Poor little guy. He tried so hard to stay on this side for awhile longer. I know the decision to go to surgery was still the right one.
It is too quiet here. The little brown dog who often came to see what I was doing, or sometimes I would peek in on him if he was napping in the bedroom; he would wait at the top of the basement steps for me to come up from the laundry, and he didn't even know what was down there! I often wondered about that - where do they think we go? Lately I've been closing the door when I go down, due to his balance problems, but he was still always waiting when I came up. Its going to be a tough adjustment in a lot of ways. But when all is said and done, I'm glad he was spared anything further today, I'm glad I got to have him for my dog, I'm glad I had a good supportive team with me when he died, and I'm honored that Frodo trusted me to help him cross the bridge.
I will probably go to MN in a few days - will be good to be with family. Then up to Grand Forks for Drummer's birthday and his concert the day after.
Will let y'all know my plans - maybe we can do a get-together?

thats funny - you brought back and old memory of being at my grandmas house. She had a terrier mutt named Je Me (sounds like Ja mae) - funny side story to that was that someone told her thats how you say "you are loved" or "I love you" in French so she named her dog that ...turned out its truely spelt/pronounced JE T'AIME. whooops the dog was loved nuntheless. .... anyhow, he would always sit at the top of these wooden stairs that led to the "scary typical grandma cobwebby damp, where all the canned food was kept on shelves incase of a cold war type basement" anytime anyone went down there.
I remember when the tornado sirens would go off and we would go down to that scary basement with our flashlights and transistor radio.
Je Me was just a little guy who was afraid to come down to the basement, however, would stay at the top of the stairs as if he were guarding us from the storm.
the top of these wooden stairs that led to the "scary typical grandma cobwebby damp, where all the canned food was kept on shelves incase of a cold war type basement"
I love the description!
I think small dogs are more afraid of the steps (falling) than they are of the basement. But who knows?
one going down the stairs to brightly light laundry room with the 50's color pattern white and bright blues...somehow NEVER ANY CLOTHES anywhere...NEVER...??? that is really strange looking back on it now...
as you round the corner is the fun part...it was where they ran their taxidermy shop out of. Basically it was 2 parts...one the showroom and the other the mounting/painting room.
The showroom had all kinds of fish, bearrugs, birds on the wall, a warthog, antelope, buffalo, grizzly, moose, etc.
I had to sleep in a pull out couch in the showroom...turned into jumanji ...at times it freaked me out...but normally I got used to it and dreamed i was somewhere in africa or something like that...
the other room was just weird...cool but weird....it was where a lot of mounted fish were just gray in color until my grandma hand painted them...
basically they where in plaster casts to protect them until ready to paint.
also the room was full of body forms to put inside of the mounts..
Thank you, everyone, for your words of comfort and sympathy. It helps so much to know I have friends far and wide who are thinking of me and my dear departed Frodo.
As I've been getting ready to head for MN to visit family, arranging for house-watching, doing laundry, packing, making sure my kitchen contractor will have what he needs while I'm away, and thinking I would just leave whenever I get good and ready...
...my sister called this morning to say that my aunt is not feeling well, so its good timing for me to be going down there and to just be able to pitch in and help as much as I'm needed.
I'm still getting all the pre-winter stuff done here today - outside water shut off and hoses drained, flower boxes and deck furniture put away, putting plastic on all the great room and front room (leaky) windows, laundry, packing, loading the car. Hope to have it all done by nightfall, then will get the trash out, dishes done, and be ready to leave at first light tomorrow.
I found Frodo's favorite plush toy - a one-eyed bear - and I recalled the time it had been left behind at camp. The next time we went there, about a month later, Frodo dashed inside, grabbed his bear, and started crying with joy. Eventually, the bear got chewed up beyond my sewing abilities and we put him away, as I didn't want Frodo to ingest the stuffing! The vet's office said I can send his little bear along with him for private cremation. So I will drop that off at the vet's office in the morning on my way out of town. Hoping to see eagles over the lake as I leave town - that would be a great comfort.
I have found that the things I did to memorialize Da Yooper and now Frodo and Reba have helped me so much. I know it doesn't matter to little Frodo, who is already taking on some fun new herding job far beyond the Rainbow Bridge, but with his ears still perked up for that day when he hears me coming.
I am glad I didn't try to drive to MN yesterday. I found I was too much in zombie mode. At least now I know its normal and it doesn't scare me. I knew this would be tough. I know I will get through it.
Forgive me if I posted this already, but yesterday Drummer's friend and his co-worker called to see if it would be a good day to come over and take down two trees. They also took down the dog fence and cleaned up my whole back yard. I'd been waiting for them to have time to take care of the trees this fall, but their timing couldn't have been better. It looks so nice out there now, and will make spring clean-up so much easier.
Well, I'd better stop rambling and make use of all the daylight.
Can I send a couple photos to someone to get them posted? Please let me know. I'd try to muddle through the resize thing myself, but can't today. Would like to get a couple of pics of Frodo posted, though.
when are you coming? I want to plan a dinner night or something. whats good for you and how long will you be here?

I hope you got to see the eagles - this great memory of the bear brought tears to my eyes- I just want to give you a hug sweetheart. :frown:
I'm heading down that way tomorrow (Monday). First stop will be my aunt's apartment - she had a pretty rough day today. Once I see what's up, I will post and hopefully we all can get together for dinner. If my aunt is not in need of a lot of help, I will be pretty free to plan things. I will likely drive up to Grand Forks on Friday for Drummer's BD and his concert on Saturday, then drive back to St. Paul on Sunday and stay awhile. I have my work with me, and can also meet with my clients and see if they have my next project ready for me to take home. So I do think there will be time for a Cooler Crew event. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. Bear with me - I will try to post again tomorrow night.
Good trip to MN. One bald eagle, as I was leaving town, other sitings were three fawns, later one doe, and later still three more fawns.
Will firm up the schedule today and try to post something tonight about a cooler crew gathering - probably for next week - looking at Tuesday or Thursday evening at this point.
Please say a prayer, think kind thoughts, etc. for Lil' Bear. He's been limping on one of his legs and is in pain. We're going into the Doctor's today. I am extremely scared.
Good news: He has the equivalent injury of a severely pulled hamstring. He got some steroids and pain meds (The Bonds Martini) and is home convalescing as we speak.
Bad news: He's got a severely arthritic hip, which, because he landed wrong, caused the muscle pull. Good news is, there's a care regimen that works extremely well for cats (but not for dogs, were he a dog I would have had to put him down today) so if it gets any worse there's a surgical option available before we have the big talk about rainbows and bridges.
Thanks everybody for the hope, prayers, etc. I *think* we're out of the woods for the time being, I left this morning, and after his pain meds kicked in, he was feeling obviously better. We'll have to continue to watch the hip pretty carefully, but I think by and large this is a blessing that we've caught the injury so early when there's still relevant care options.

I wish my mom could catch a break from stress.....My mom's dog was hit by a car last night and was killed. She got the dog a week after my dad passed away last spring, really the dog chose her not the other way around and she is devistated. The girls are really shook up about it they loved her dog. May she rest in peace.
:frown:
we'll light a candle for Frodo, tonight on our shelf of animal/pet pictures/knicknacks from the past...
I am so happy that she is okay.
that was one of the last things I expected to read when coming online this evening - sssooooooo sorry sweetheart

I think small dogs are more afraid of the steps (falling) than they are of the basement. But who knows?
I forgot to mention they were "rusty cans"
and the dusty topped canning jars full of peaches pears or jellies that you wouldn't eat because you don't know WHEN grandma "canned" them.
I recall a few cool things...
