Was Tim at the site waiting for the clue? Who provided it? How many "outsiders" were there? Many waiting for the paper?
This is important stuff ....

as far as park clean up goes...I'm sure a date will be set in the near future as to a pick up by some of the coolers......as this park was one of the worst that I've seen in a long time....but omg how does garbage get that deep into the woods...
The Pioneer Press and The WILD recently had a treasure hunt similar to the winter carnival. One of the Cooler Crew found it. Anyway a bunch from the group are interested in a park cleanup.

his replies:
I assume this is talking about Mounds again.....I just finished an email exchange with St. Paul Parks and Recs. They said they would indeed give gloves and bags and pick up the trash....They only asked that we consider staying away from the cliff areas for safety..which shouldn't be an issue as the areas that need the most clean up are near the eastern end in the woods and around..thanks for the info.
sean
Are the folks from that group looking to do it in september?...or have they already set a date? If not I would like to coordinate with every one willing to help. The more the merrier. Please let me know and if nothing else I can setup the event this week for mid to late September...........I forgot to mention the Parks Dept. liked the idea of a fall clean as there is somewhat less foliage and the trash is more visable= less chance of people getting hurt hopefully....and more trash removed. Please let me know when you can, and I will email the director and setup the details.
thanks

Treasure Hunt fan 'captures the flag'
Medallion under a tree in Mounds Park
BY KATHY HENDERSON
Pioneer Press
Tim Petrie of Cottage Grove combined his loves of hockey and of following treasure hunt clues when he set out to "Capture the Flag" and found a Pioneer Press treasure Saturday night in St. Paul.
The first summer version of the newspaper's annual winter Treasure Hunt celebrated the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild and the return of hockey.
Petrie, a 20-year-old Century College student and Minnesota Wild season-ticket holder, found the medallion shortly after 11 p.m. in a green knit pouch hidden beneath a tree in Mounds Park.
Petrie's prize: two Minnesota Wild opening-night tickets, a Wild road trip for two, a $500 Best Buy gift card, a National Hockey League Center Ice package and a 30-person suite ticket for the Oct. 16 Minnesota Wild vs. Mighty Ducks of Anaheim game.
In addition, Petrie collected all seven of the daily clues. So Tom Reid, former NHL defenseman and WCCO Radio play-by-play announcer, presented him with a Wild autographed hockey stick. An autographed jersey will be his as soon as the players get in town to sign it, Reid promised.
Since age 13, Petrie has been an avid follower of the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt and a member of the Cooler Crew, a group of fervent hunters (www.coolercrew.com). He also became a Minnesota Wild season-ticket holder at age 13.
Like the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt during the Winter Carnival, the "Capture the Flag" version had readers trying to solve daily clues, this time to find a flag, which was hidden on public land in St. Paul.
With family, friends and Cooler Crew members keeping him company and offering clue analysis, Petrie was out hunting every day.
"I was in the park Friday until 2:30 a.m. and back at 8 a.m. Saturday," he said. "The clues were the best in years," he added.
"If you ask any medallion-hunting fiend, they'd tell you these clues were better than the last five years. They were well-written, like the old Winter Carnival clues, and actually led to the place." Recent Treasure Hunt clues have been more vague with lots of room for interpretation, Cooler Crew members said.
Cooler Crew member Lisa Voigt said that treasure hunting is a family event and there are usually kids along, but Petrie has always been a real hunter. "He was good at solving clues, even as a kid," she said.
I know the person who wrote this...she's a good person and supporter of all things Cooler Crew...and also a good friend.
I'm not sure how my "dates" are going to work...but I'm all for "whatsagps" setting this up.....
on a side note....where the heck did "whatsagps" come from...he's been in hiding for months.

HEADLINE: ST. PAUL: Obb's Bar is back in the family, and back in the neighborhood
BYLINE: DON BOXMEYER Pioneer Press Columnist
BODY:
There used to be a ski jump nearby, the old Mounds Park ski jump, but that's long gone now. There used to be a big wooden hotel named the Burlington -- nicknamed The Beanery -- just over the hill and to the west. It's gone, too, now.
And right across Burns Avenue to the south there is Star Hill, a sort of a shrine, where the Order of the Eastern Star used to hold ceremonies. The hill's still there, but there haven't been any rituals for a long, long time.
That leaves Obb's Bar, a sort of shrine unto itself, where Burns, Point Douglas Road and Clarence Street all come together at the bottom end of Indian Mounds Park.
That's what the bar was called in 1931, when it was one of the first 10 bars in St. Paul to be licensed after the repeal of Prohibition, and Obb's it was for another 51 years until it changed hands in 1982.
Now it's back in the ownership of the original family, the Johnsens, after being called the Kick-Off for about 20 years. No one whose been around the East Side since the '80s or earlier, however, knew it as anything else but Obb's, despite its more recent ownership by such entertainment luminaries as Vern Landreville and former Minnesota Viking Larry Bowie.
Who was the first "Obb"? I asked the new owner, Jim Johnsen. That would be Great-Grampa Hans Johnsen, the patriarch of the family, who originally made the concrete blocks with which the place was built to be the "Five Corners" grocery and feed store in 1919.
Hans' son, Albert, took over the place, and while his brothers all went into the dairy business, he stayed with the store, which became known as Obb's because one of his best childhood friends could not fully pronounce the name Albert Johnsen. It came out "Obb," so Obb's the place stayed, through two additional rebuilding projects that turned it into a spacious bar and restaurant.
Even though Albert has been gone since 1952, the largest photo in the place is of him, Obb, draped with the carcasses of a fantastic -- and perhaps even legal -- long-ago duck shoot.
One of his sons was Robert Hans, who was born in 1922. Eventually, in 1943, he would marry Rose, who left a job in the Ramsey County Courthouse to waitress at Obb's.
Even though Robert retired in 1982, Rose, who will be 81 in July, is still working at Obb's and says she has no plans to retire.
When Jim brought the Johnsen family back into Obb's recently, Rosie asked if she would be fired.
"I told her, 'No way. You're the boss,'" said Jim.
Jim has wanted the place ever since the family sold it to settle an estate 20 years ago, but he was only 25 then and not considered mature enough to boss the business.
And when Vern Landreville decided to sell in 1987, the time still was not right, and Jim was managing the Bungalow restaurant near the Hudson, Wis., bridge.
But the next time around, when Larry Bowie recently decided to sell, he approached Jim.
"You should have your own place back," Bowie said. And it was time.
"We cut the deal of a lifetime," said Jim.
Nothing will change, he said; not the menu or the decor, except that the sign over the door will once again just say "Obb's Bar." And Rosie will still be the boss.
I don't know what he's been doing, but he contacted me about a month ago. He wanted the cache owners at Mounds to help with a park cleanup. Well, we get another "event" stat, and he sets it up. HEH
When Kathy came down the first thing she asked was if I was a member of the cooler crew so I knew I was in luck because I hadn't mentioned cooler crew to anyone yet. She told me she was a good friend of yours and I told her I was also. She was very nice and seemed genuinely excited for me! It's a very nice article as well.
Originally, Steve set up a grid of the park and broke it down into sections. The idea was to yell out the section it was in when we got the clue. In principle it was a good idea, but we were all pretty sure it was zone 3 so it didn't help in this particular case. We had people at the paper and in the park as well.
Personally, I was hunting with Dan (OTiS) and Steph (PayMe) mostly all day (along with many others), so when the clue came I was with Dan while Steph called it in. We had it on speaker phone on his cell and as soon as we realized it was a normal lenghted clue, we started taking off towards the spot. We got the clue a few seconds after Jake had called CM with the clue, and they had already taken off. However they went past the path that it was on to a different path, and Dan and I took the "shortcut". The path we took had several downed trees as obsicles, but Dan and I cleared them with ease! We got to the top of the hill at the scenic overlook and briefly went the wrong way only to stop and run back up the hill. By that time everyone that was behind us caught up but we went straight down the correct path (the one we just came up), and Dan found the pine tree (it was hard to tell because the lower branches were all gone). He said this is it, I saw the package and we took off towards the car. I'd estimate 2 minutes from the time the paper came out to the time I had it in my hand.
They only asked that we consider staying away from the cliff areas for safety
I really am annoyed at hearing this so many times- um, fricken DUH!
When does the DVD come out>

Regarding the "star" articles. I had no hand in finding the feature (I think Map Guy found it). I just heard from PayMe and Me2 that there was an old article about it. I knew I could get onto the archives from home, so I did a little searching and there they were.
I was hoping for the group picture.
hunting in the summer is so so much different than the winter. i'm not sure which i like better. i think i'm torn.
sounds like it was a race at 11pm...rock on timmers!
...this hunt would have been a blast if it was based on a 12 clue hunt and went to about 10.......I've always said I wanted this area of a park for a hunt.....just 'cuz OBB's would be a funtime for hanging out in the winter when your tired of hunting....
...no need to leave a park to find food or beer.
I agree tim, the snow helps with identifying where you've been and it's fun to roll in!
as far as winter vs summer.... the summer hunts are fun, because you dont really need all the "weaponry", except maybe a hockey stick, like CM had to poke around at stuff....and you also dont freeze your butt off, so it makes staying in the park for longer periods of time, an option.......
But I also prefer winter, because like Tim said... its easier to see whats already been hit, and what needs to be gone over....
although even sometimes THAT doesnt matter either, and a zillion people can go over the same spot and still miss it
unless Mapguy gets there first -than you really never know if the spot has been dug yet
Future finders in the making. :ooh:
Tim gets to mold them like the crew did to him......oh geez....look out....
I might as well retire...
This hunt was one of the best events for the CC to be a part of. Everybody was in good spirits and the weather rocked! We even picked up a few 'virgins' along the way. Having Obb's right there sure was a bonus. Loved the star and the park. It was finally put at our park ESD! I had you there in spirit anyway bud.
I could go on and on about how cool this hunt was. But I'll sum it up with a quote from Tim while we were waiting in the press room at the PP yesterday. As we were commenting on how the room needed some OBBvious updates, Tim said "Well get used to it, as we're going to be here in January too" Awesome!
thats one bad-ass mofo...
(she is flashing gang signs, right?)
Can I get a full blown version of this?

Either way I couldn't find one of that damn star. I'm OBBsessed with that thing for some reason. Kinda like Devil's Tower was in Close Encounters. Thanks for the info LLB. Very interesting. I don't think it would have had the same impact if I didn't see it for the first time in the middle of the night with the full moon out. I'm also glad they didn't restore it. It's just fine the way it is in my book.
Look at the line from Clarence....
Mucluck and Wanda are all about the lines...they would have made me line that up.
-you can see the trees where the star is and then line that straight out and up the light green path
yup I will send the pic asap THX -
