1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

I believe it is $14 I am about to go get it so I'll get back to you.

Thanks alot Tim. General question.... I am rather far from the cities and I was wondering if there is a website that lists all the parks in st paul with all of the geographical layouts? When the clues are given I can maybe go by a map since I am not able to be there. Thanks

HEY IS THE TREASURE HUNTERS GUIDE

tim_the_hunter

Yes it was $14. It is kind of ironic because we had to hunt to find the store. Once we were there, we had to hunt to find the book. Now that we have the book we'll use it to hunt for the medallion. See a patern? As to your question, I sure couldn't find one. So that is why I got this book. I do strongly sugest it if you can get one.

Good luck with your hunt!

Does anyone know the exact date the Hunt starts this year? Hello to all the fellow Hunters that I chatted with last year...... Ready for another exciting season of hunting...

The Hunt starts a week from tomorrow.

But the clue usually comes out around 11:30 the night before the morning the actual paper comes. So a week from today at 11:30 PM the first clue should come out on this site.

Here I am for the first time in 2000! The fever is starting to take control of me. I'll be worthless at the office for the next few weeks.

Thanks for all of the nice comments about the Treasure Hunter's Guide. I hope this edition gets one of us to the treasure. My website is new this year. I think you'll like the way that the images are linked to spots on the maps. If it gets too bogged down during the hunt, I have an alternate site as backup.

If I don't see you sooner, I'll see you at the park.

Sincerely,

Steve Worthman

Fever has taken over my life! And it's only going to get worse. I've already rounded up maps and magnifying glasses and all that stuff. Now I need to find all my hunting gear...but most of the digging tools will depend on the kind of snow there is to dig through.

Yep, the hungry mind sells it. It's an incredible resource. I just met the author and creator of this book tonight. He seems like a cool guy. If he has the chance, he's going to be at the McGovern's Prehunt bash with a few copies. It's worth your time and money to pick one up, if you're really into the hunt, there isn't another resource that will show you every park in St. Paul with all of the details.

Ian!!! It's great seeing you back here...and I agree. Let it snow!

After looking over the new edition of the book, I must agree. It's very well put together and more accurate than the first. Good job, Steve!

One week from today the first clue will let us know if it's in St. Paul city limits or within the limits of Ramsey County. It's gonna be a long 7 days!

Is there anyway I can get a treasure hunt guide by mail since I am not able to be in the cities right now? Thanks

It looks for the moment like I'll be the one organizing the pre-hunt bash so I need to get at least an approximate head count so we know what to tell Patrick McGovern's. Right now my guess is around 20, though I don't know if everyone will be there the entire time. Still, if you are planning to come let me know, either on here or at AllisonWondrland@yahoo.com and that way, if there will be significantly more, hopefully I will know. The plan is to make the reservations for 7:00, even if some people come later. The intention is to go until midnight or until we get booted. Since we'll be taking up a fair amount of space for quiten a while, it would be nice if everyone planned on eating there so the restaurant can make some money. They offer both food and alcohol. There will likely be many a treasure hunting story (earmuffs Terry?), perhaps some treasure hunting trivia, and of course at 11:30, the first clue. So let me know if you're coming and if you have any questions.

Terry- I was trying to remember who picked up the earmuffs at the capitol. What was the deal with that?

Allison, I am going to try my best to be at the Prehunt bash. My brother may be getting married by a judge that day so I am not sure yet, but please please count me in. I will come afterwards if need be. First time doing something like this, although I met a few of you at Conway last year.

Allison, I would love to come but because I am stuck here in boring old Hibbing, I will not be able to attend. I did recently pick up the Treasure Hunters Guide by the way and it looks very informative.

I got it at a book store near Macalaster, on Grand. IT had many copies of it. It was $14.98. I also hear that it is at 111 E. Kellogg.

The reservation is official for Saturday night at Patrick McGovern's starting at 7:00. Tell them you're part of the Cooler Crew when you get there. Most likely we will be in the back room. Let me know if you still have questions.

Thanks Allison!

Just think! Only 5 more days before the first clue!!!!

Jake - I can tell the story about the earmuffs at Patrick McGovern's. I must say it's still a bit painful to think about...but at least I can say the word now. See you Saturday!

Incidentally, I'll probably stop by McGoverns for a beer (im also eager to hear Terry's story, it sounds like he had it and put it back) but i'll be in front of my computer for the first clue.

Jake - We should be able to get the first clue at McGovern's. There are a few people with cell phones and someone can call with the clue.

And btw...I'm a she.

It is a little hard at times to tell what gender people are in here. I have to confess I thought Terry was male at first too. And for the record, I am a male. Allison is my last name, not first.

Wish I could join all of you at McGoverns! Even though I am not quite old enough to drink it would still be fun

Hey Birdie, you don't have to drink. I am not 21 either. So skip your classes and come on up. I do know what college is like though, so maybe you should study if need be. What a bummer that is.

Study on a Saturday night? What? Are you in the middle of finals?

Well the thing about it is that I am up in Hibbing! :( It is too darn boring up here. I will be coming down in a few weekends to look for the prize though. If I was there I would be there with all of you. Drinking is not really my deal but I can slam down Pepsi with the best!

Electric Duane

Birdie, I admire your ability to stay off the sauce. You must not be a native Iron Ranger then, or you might be tarred and feathered. Say hello to Iron World for me. I too would like to join everyone at Pattie McG's, but I'm not sure if I will be able. If I don't show up at McG's, y'all will recognize me during the hunt...I'll be the one wandering around the frog pond like Rain Man saying, "'Course, I'm an excellent digger." frustrated by trying to figure out the meaning of words such as "iconoclast."

Let it snow... PS Dennis Green must go.

Birdie15

Well Duane, I am not a Ranger but if I was I would probably be drunk now! That is all everyone, young or old, does up here. I cannot wait til around the 5-6 clue, that is when I will be down there with the rest of you. A question, what should I wear to represent I am apart of the watercooler? I know that white things on the sleeve are common. Any suggestions? Thanks

The Dream Team

We have come close in the past, but this is OUR year!!!

It's that time again!!! Just wanted to say "Hi" to everyone and to let you know that The Dream Team is due!!! We've added some key players in the offseason, and this is going to be our year!

No more pictures of the team sitting on the bench at Conway right next to where the Damn thing was found when there is still digging to do!!!

This year the picture will include the medallion!! I know this may seem a little brash, but we are going to gurantee a Dream Team victory this year.

Sorry everyone, but at least you will get some exercise and fresh air!

I can't make it to the Pre-Hunt bash, I have a family get together. I have a feeling that one of the Cooler Crew members will find the medallion this year. I hope it is me! I hopefully will meet some of you digging, until then good luck!

Several folks have asked what to wear hunting that would let others know you're part of the Cooler Crew.

Basically, anything white that wouldn't ordinarily be thought of as outerwear. A couple of years someone wore a baby's cloth diaper tied around their sleeve or thigh.

Others wear white pith helmets (we are hunters) or white t-shirts over the jacket would be good. Whatever you think would work for you...it's fun to see others out in the park that we meet here.

For those of you who can make it Saturday night - I'm looking forward to meeting you or renewing old friendships.

For those of you who can't make it this time - and everyone else for that matter, remember that we also have a rehash bash the Sunday following the finding of the medallion. It's held about noon in the park the medallion is found in. Mark it on your calendar now and save that afternoon if you can. It's potluck and we usually have a grill available.
