It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.
Terry
And just for clarification, Patrick McGovern's is a bar/restaurant. Many families dine there so you don't need to be 21 to attend. You just can't drink alcohol if you've not reached that magic age.
I am gunna wear a white t-shirt over my jacket with WATERCOOLER written on it in marker. Anyone have any catchy phrases or anything else I can put on my shirt, maybe i can put everyone's name. Whadda ya think? :)
That sounds good to me! The Pioneer Press had Cooler Crew t-shirts for awhile. I don't know if they have any left...but they were free. You had to get them from the front desk downtown.
Electric: You are bringing back memories about the iconoclast!!! God I hate the clue makers.. LOL So does anyone know what happend to GREEN? Does everyone Dig? :-)
I like the t-shirt over your jacket idea better. The names all over is a good addition. I shall have to start thinking about what twist I will add to my winter wear.
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! Mother nature never fails. Just in time for the hunt to begin. TIme to make a trip to Home Depot to buy some more shovels. The snow has sparked an interest in my friends. Now they want to come digging. The more the better. See ya guys Sat. Hey anybody going out Sat. night after the first clue just for the heck of it?
Not likely. I think its probably better to pace yourself a bit so you're not dead tired at the end when you really need to have energy. So there seems to be no point in digging unless you have an idea of where to dig.
A long, long time ago, Astraios, the god of Starlight, and Eos, the goddess of the Rosy Fingered moon, were wed. The union was blessed with five sons: Boreas, Titan, Euros, Zephyrus and Notos. As the eldest, Boreas, was granted the title of King of the winds and he assigned to each brother a permanent grant of great force and power. To Titan was assigned the blustery North Wind. To Euros was granted control of the irresponsible East Wind. To Zephyrus was given custody of the bountiful West Wind. To Notos was presented the balmy but unstable South Wind. The brothers cavorted gaily over land and sea.
Meanwhile, Boreas, while on his extensive travels, came upon a winter paradise known as Minnesota. He paused to behold the enchanting beauty of a magnificent group of seven gently sloping hills in whose embrace nestled a beautiful city. Boreas whistled in sheer ecstasy, "Historic Saint Paul and her seven hills! An ideal place. I will make Saint Paul the capitol of all my domains. It will henceforth be emblazoned to the world as the winter playground of the Realm of Boreas."
Meanwhile, Vulcanus Rex, the god of Fire, and the implacable enemy of Boreas, crackled in defiant disdain. "By the great sword of Mars I will temper the blusterings of Boreas with the heat and roar of my forces." He was tireless in his bitter resistance to all the festivities of Boreas by forcing the warmth of springtime sun to shine on the Saintly City.
Undaunted, Boreas proclaimed a celebration in the spirit of gay Carnival and invited the Queen of Snows, the fairest maiden of the realm, to advise him in the plans for a fabulous festival. "So be it!" shouted Boreas, "There will be a Carnival in olde Saint Paul!" Boreas selected a Prime Minister to coordinate preparations in all the Principalities, Provinces and Royal Houses within the realm of Saint Paul.
And so, for ten glorious days, there was Carnival and joyous celebration in St. Paul -- feasting, dancing, fun and frolic reigned over by Boreas and the Queen of Snows, along with the four Winds, who were each accompanied by a lovely Princess from the realm of Boreas. Klondike Kate, a lady of song and merriment, added her sassy but enchanting voice to the festivities by singing songs of desire and sentiment.
On the 10th day of celebration, as the people grew weary of winter's fun, Vulcanus Rex and his Krewe stormed the magnificent Ice Castle and confronted the King's Guard, who made ready for battle. Upon the good counsel of the Queen, Boreas bade farewell to the people of his winter capitol in the interest of peace and goodwill and returned to dwell among the gods of Olympus. Vulcanus Rex and his Krewe quickly restored the warmth of springtime to the seven hills of olde Saint Paul and the people turned to the glow of sunshine with glee. Boreas and his court looked forward to the time when summer's warmth would once again relinquish its hold on the realm and the frosty atmosphere of winter would prevail. It is then when winter's frosty frolic of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival begins anew!
I know we asked for more snow, but Mom Nature didn't have to bring the bitter cold with the snow. Warmer temperatures would be appreciated but not higher than 32. Don't want the snow to melt and refreeze. It makes digging more difficult. Two days to go!
Hey, I'm getting so psyched! The hunt is only days away! Welcome back everybody. Even tho I basically disappear over the summer, I think of you often and look forward to starting a new discussion about the ever-elusive blue puck. More soon......
Just a reminder for those arriving late who haven't bothered to go over some of the previous messages. The pre-hunt bash will be at Patrick McGovern's on West 7th in St. Paul this Saturday, starting at 7:00PM and presumably going until after the first clue comes out at 11:30. Its a bar and restaurant so plan to eat, but only drink if you're over 21 (though everyone is welcome inside). There will be some trivia about the hunt and maybe some other activities. Buttons and Treasure Hunter Guides MIGHT be available there. And since tomorrow is my birthday, make sure you bring me presents! (hehe) Maybe a nice shiny new shovel? (just kidding)
Map Master, I'm hyped! Although I didn't shovel all the driveways in the neighborhood, I did brush the snow off of several surrounding cars as mine was warming up after work last night. No medallion though. But if the thing's hidden on a windshield, I've got the technique down to find it! Watch for the "plate of glass" clue . . .
I have heard rumors of more snow on Saturday!!?? I shall not gripe about too much snow...the more the merrier, I say. It would suck if it were this cold, though.
Actually, at the moment, virtually no plan at all. Just a possibility of dinner, but that's far from confirmed. Its my 32nd birthday so nothing special. And since my birthday is close to the treasure hunt every year, I can't say its been of any help when it comes to finding the medallion in the past.
Hi to all my treasure hunting friends. Last year I guessed it was in Phalen. I still think it could be there this year. But being an iconclast(always a year late) I will guess its in Linwood park this year. Now the trick is to guess what it is hiden in?? I think it will have something to do with Year 2000 maybee in a New Year's eve party hat with 2000 on it.
When will they get ride of the header stateing it has been found, or did Aaron find it again this year??
I agree daddy I think it will have something to do with the millienium. Perhaps hidden inside of a pepper mill?, or maybe a play on the phrase "Y2K", as in it is hidden inside of an item which name begins with a Y and ends with a K (i.e. yolk, yak, etc).
Everyone thought it would be hidden in something to do with "Jesse" or the anniversary of the newspaper last year and it was in a crocheted yarn pouch. The Y2K thing might be to obvious.
I hate it that I am stuck up here in Hibbing, but it does give me a chance to do more thinking about the clues then to just look at it and go. Wish I could make it on Sat. See you all in a couple of weeks
Has it ever been attached to anything of relevance? Looking over the list of past hiding places it certainly didn't seem so. The impression I get is the person (people?) sits around and tries to think of either the most bizarre thing they can think of, or the most diabolically hard to find. It seems they leave the commemerative stuff up to those who post the prize money.

Good luck with the finals!

Maybe I can wear a diaper over my hat?

Terry, what do you usually wear to represent the Cooler Crew?
Keep an eye on the parks today. Snow and wind, what a perfect combination for covering all evidence.

I suppose you are correct. The snow has just got me excited.

I love the snow!!!!!!!!!!
KB - You got it bad! Why don't you go out and shovel every driveway in your neighborhood.
How much snow did you get down there?
They're saying 8". With what we got last week, that should be quite enough.
I live in St. Paul and we had 6 inches at my home @ 4:00 pm
Thanks for the update on the snowfall, sounds like it is gunna be tough digging.
This snow is easy to move around. If it stays cold, the hunt-shoveling should be pretty easy.
FYI: Word on the street is that the treasure is hidden in Sara Jane Olsen's front yard. Be careful, the bushes may be booby-trapped.

Steve, Steve, Steve
Jesse the Gov arranged for it to be hidden at the Capitol. He's gotta be out there promotin' his new book.....

Scribe i am in class now but im about to leave. We were doing a project in class that I wouldn't know how to do on my own.

Mister Allison. Happy birthday in advance. You don't look a day over 25! Whatcha got planned for your big day tomorrow?

::Scribe shaking her head violently::
COMO,COMO,COMO!!!!!!! Nobody ever listens to me!!!!
Sometimes I'm right you know!:)
how do you make this thing work?
1 dog - sometimes a swift kick to the "c" drive does wonders . . .
Everyone thought it would be hidden in something to do with "Jesse" or the anniversary of the newspaper last year and it was in a crocheted yarn pouch. The Y2K thing might be to obvious.
Could it be taped to a MN WILD hocky puck?
I hate it that I am stuck up here in Hibbing, but it does give me a chance to do more thinking about the clues then to just look at it and go. Wish I could make it on Sat. See you all in a couple of weeks
Bill G and Maureen H - did you get a call from the L.A. Times?
It doesn't really matter what it is in or attached to. Anything that is out of the ordinary you should look at very carefully.
Has it ever been attached to anything of relevance? Looking over the list of past hiding places it certainly didn't seem so.
