yes - but the owl bit into the loli, nick.

I want to know how many LICKS it takes.

I only like the orange flavor Kitch - So I may test that one for ya.

I'm also wondering if the amount of saliva in your mouth or if you drink water during the licking - if it alters the number (available soluable solution to sugar ratio?)

what happens if you just drop it into a glass of water, and leave it there for a buncha hours?

I think I might have to try that later on... ive got a whole bag of those things in my kitchen.

you will need to aggitate it and I think it will disolve until the ratio of sugar to water gets fairly high at that point you may need to heat the water to increase absorption.

my roommate agrees that you can't disolve it in a regular cup of water - cause the sugar:water ratio is too high - at least not without lots of agitation.

He suggested I take one to work and set it up in the lab in a beaker on the machine that does the stiring for me...

I'll have to think about that one - and time it when the bosses aren't around.

Almost bought a shirt tonight that says -

Mr Owl? How many licks does it take to get into the center?

is this really the aftereffects of a brown spider bite? AND are there any of these in Minnesota?

I cannot say that those specifically are not doctored up images, but yes that can happen from a brown recluse spider bite. I was in the army with a guy who was bit just above his boot on his calf (he used to blouse his boots), they had to cut a chunk of his leg out before it spread. Good thing they caught it early. Nevermind, he was bit by a black widow...

BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER

SIZE: 1/4 to 3/4 inch (6.4-19.1mm)

COLOR: Golden brown

DESCRIPTION: Brown recluse spiders belong to a group of spiders commonly known as violin spiders or fiddlebacks. This is because of a characteristic fiddle-shaped pattern they have on their head region. The spider is golden brown with the fiddle being dark brown or black. This spider is not hairy and the fiddle pattern is often shiny. They are about 1/4 to 3/4 inch long.

HABITAT: Brown recluse spiders are found primarily in the Midwest. Many cases of bites are reported from Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The edge of its range just reaches the tip of western Virginia, but it occurs rarely in this state. The spider commonly lives in basements and garages of houses and often hides behind boards and boxes. Bites often occur when the spiders hide in towels or old clothes left in those areas.

LIFE CYCLE: Female deposits eggs in off-white silken cases about 1/3 inch in diameter in sheltered, dark areas. Spiderlings emerge in 24-36 days and abandon the egg case. Development is slow, influenced by weather conditions and food availability. They reach maturity in 10 to 12 months and can survive long periods of time without food or water.

TYPE OF DAMAGE: The severity of the bite may vary. The symptoms may vary from no harm at all to a reaction that is very severe. Often there is a systemic reaction within 24-36 hours characterized by restlessness, fever, chills, nausea, weakness, and joint pain. Where the bite occurs there is often tissue death and skin is sloughed off. In some severe cases, a wound may develop that lasts several months.

CONTROL: In all cases, a physician should be notified. If at all possible, kill and take the spider to the physician for positive identification. Individual spiders can be crushed underfoot or sprayed with an aerosol spray. Clean up and remove any potential hiding places.

Important note: Many of the wolf spiders are similar in appearance and have similar markings as the brown recluse. They are large, robust, and hairy and, therefore, can be distinguished from the brown recluse.

INTERESTING FACTS: Spiders are seldom aggressive and bite only when threatened or injured.

Brown Recluse Spiders: Truth vs. Myth

(Note: Some of the following information was taken from Richard Vetter's spider web site at the University of California, Riverside to help write this article. Richard Vetter is an expert on brown recluse spiders having studied them for many years. Please see his site, http://spiders.ucr.edu/ for more information on brown recluse spiders and their bites.)

Every year there are people in Minnesota that believe that have been bitten by a brown recluse spider. This diagnosis is based on the presence of a necrotic wound or ‘bite', (a lesion with localized dead tissue). Any time a necrotic wound is encountered, many people assume that it must be the result of a brown recluse spider as they are known to be a common cause of such lesions. This conclusion may be further confirmed or reinforced by a physician from just an examination of the wound. Unfortunately, in most cases this is inaccurate.

Despite unconfirmed reports of brown recluse spider bites in Minnesota, a positively identified brown recluse has never been found biting someone here. There is confusion as to what a brown recluse looks like. It is not a big spider which surprises most people when they see an actual specimen. The body measures only 1/4 - 1/2 inch long. It is brown with a dark colored violin shaped marking behind its head. Brown recluse spiders characteristically have six eyes while most spiders have eight. You usually need magnification to see the eyes.

The issue of bites is further complicated by the fact that these brown recluse spiders are not native to Minnesota. They are found in the south central states, from eastern Nebraska south to eastern Texas and east to southern Indiana, western Kentucky and Tennessee, and northern Georgia. Brown recluse spiders may be found in Minnesota but they must be transported here from an endemic area. It is possible but rare. The reality is there has only been one confirmed brown recluse spider specimen found in Minnesota in the last 60 years.

Brown recluse spiders and shy and infrequently encounter people. They typically establish themselves in basements but typically do not move beyond. Brown recluse spiders are communal and when they are in a favorable area, you will find many of them -- it would be very unusual to find just a single brown recluse. The presence of high numbers does not seem to increase bites. There are many cases where rooms have been infested by brown recluse spiders without residents ever being bitten. Because of their shy nature, bites usually only occur when the spiders become accidentally trapped between a person and bed sheets, clothing, shoes, or something similar.

Despite claims to the contrary, brown recluse spider bites do not result in ongoing, ulcerating wounds. The vast majority of brown recluse bites heal on their own within two to three months without medication and with little scarring. There has never been a confirmed death in North America attributed to a brown recluse spider bite.

If brown recluse spiders are unlikely suspects in creating necrotic lesions then what is causing these wounds? There are many medical problems that can affect the skin that have been reported in the medical literature, including but not limited to, any infection with Staphylococcus or Streptococcus species, Lyme disease, infected and chronic Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster, fungal infection, diabetic ulcer, Pyoderma gangrenosum, chemical burn, and poison ivy/oak.

You can not identify a brown recluse spider bite from just an examination of the wound, especially if you are in an area where the brown recluse does not occur. The bottom line is in Minnesota you must have a spider positively identified by an expert as a brown recluse and it must have been seen or strongly implicated in creating the bite before you can call it a brown recluse spider bite. Otherwise, keep an open mind and explore other possibilities to properly diagnose the problem.

I dont normally sit around and get out my magnifying lenses, to look for shapes, and count eyes and stuff when I see spiders..... I usually either squash them with something, or let my cat/dog get them, or in some extreme cases, I run away and scream for my mom who I dont even live with....

I don't like to let my kids kill them. I don't know why... When I am called in to squash something, I usually pick it up and send it outside. With their second lease on life, maybe they will do something constructive. Like stay out of my house...

I like to capture spiders and ants in winter ---sweep them up or in a cup and throw them outside ...sometimes they freeze in mid air, even before they hit the snow. its cool to see them frozen in the snow.

those photos nearly made me lose my dinner. bleech.

I don't know if that map Z posted is correct or not, I could have sworn we had those out here. I know we have lots of black widows - infact there was one of those in my living room the other day. I squished it - and flipped it to look at the tummy.

I'll pass on spiders! I have enough problems with friggin snails.

Pretty much a karma thing...

I am just worried that when the aliens come, they will be like Jack and the Beanstalk giant-types, and maybe they will have pity on me and just set me outside instead of squishing me...
