So I bought Posen's extra Magellan 500 today. Upon opening it, I found that the basemap was corrupt and I got a NAND error. I called Magellan, they said that I would need to send it in for a replacement. Normally they require a receipt for warranty service, as the warranty is only for one year and without a receipt they would have no way of knowing when the unit was purchased. They were really nice about it, and after I explained that I didn't buy it from a store and thus had no receipt, said they would send me a new GPS unit. I had to give them my credit card #, the deal is that I have a month after I receive the new unit to send them the defective one or I get charged. Hopefully it all works out, I'm shocked (in a good way) that they're doing this as they clearly don't have to under their warranty policy.

My new GPS got here yesterday! It works fine. Does anyone know a way to get detailed maps without spending $100 for Directroute or Topo?

KITCH

I don't know of a way at all.....
Sat, 12/01/2007 - 8:44 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

That's the problem with GPSrs. Most manufacturers design them so you HAVE to buy their mapping software. There are some open source alternatives for the major ones (Garmin and Magellan), but they rely totally on user submitted maps. Meaning if someone hasn't taken the time to map out the streets here in the metro, you won't have a map to use. If you wanted to spend the time though, you could plot out the maps for this area, heh.

Thanks, I just realized that the box had a big sticker on it with a discount code to buy TOPO 3D for just $10. Considering it's normally $150, that's not a bad deal. The program seems to work fine.

but topo wont give you streets and points of interest like banks retaraunts...I put mapsend direct route on mine gives auto routing which is nice

Is topo good for ATV trails? I'd buy it for $10 and get the other one.

topo isn't great for much in this state or area...

unless your near a hilly area...

I'd say for 4wheeling the roadmaps would help the best...I notice for snowmobiling I have all the fireroads and minor roads...

Yep! Although it's slightly outdated. I was giving it a test spin today at Mounds Park this afternoon after class, it still shows the triangle of roads where the medallion was in 1987, even though one of those streets is a dead end now. Speaking of which, does someone have the gps file of all the past medallion locations?
