I'd suggest singer or white. My mom has a singer sewing machine thats nearly 30 years old still runs like a charm and she has a surger that is a white and seems to have a little more problems than the singer but it might be she is new to surging. I also have a used singer works great. Good luck!
Check out the Elna machines - they are reasonable and WONDERFUL.

I have a a singer craft sewing machine, a viking sewing machine AND a Singer (foot peddle) from the late 1870's.
BUT!!! the machine I use the most - costumes, hemming, button holes, and just about everything under the sun that I want to whip up - I pull out the Elna. The front load bobbin thingy pi$$ed me off the first time I used it, but now I love it - it's the smoothest, easiest machine ever, and it's so light weight, but really durable.
